Yes this is an unashamed claim post.

I do want to say one thing though....once I finally got it around I was doing them consistently and they were REALLY easy. It was just getting it around the first 18 times and landing on my head that was hard.

If you're wondering this is the summer setup at Mt Baw Baw in Victoria, Australia. About 2 hours drive east of Melbourne. Its about 80m of dryslope inrun into the jump you see below.

stoked on backflip, And for those that don't know anything about how the world works the southern hemisphere is on a opposite timescale than the northern, this is why every pro skier goes down to south america/new zealand come august because when we're in the dead of summer, they're in the dead of winter. anyways, 18 tries though...really. now you gotta take that shit to snow

well I've never been gymnastically inclined and never done it on a tramp so I thought the airbag was a good place to start. I'm not small either...6ft. The reason I didn't make it around so many times was because I was scared to look back for my landing....kept looking forwards too much.

If anyone is as retarded in the air as me then I highly recommend trying it on an airbag where there aren't any consequences. If you're like me and have been wanting to do it for 6 or so years then you'll probably end up as stoked as I was.

yeah i think Baw Baw have been struggling to get regular skiers in the snow season (no shit...) so they've taken on a park focus. I think its a really good idea. Then they figured out that they can run it in summer. Its about $20 for the entire day but they only open it on certain dates in summer. Usually long weekends and stuff. But if you call them up and have a group of 20 people (like our uni group of 42) or so they'll open it any day of the week for you.

Couldn't agree more.  The haters are saying that it is better to land on your head on snow learning a back flip than it is to learn one into water, foam or air bag.  I guess that means that, when I open a sick splash pool near you, you guys won't come because it would be steezier to be beat the crap out of yourselves learning new stuff on hard pack snow. 

You guys need to understand that not everyone is born to be good in the air.  I get way more stoked watching someone who isn't naturally good leaning tricks.  They have to think about it more and it may take longer. 

News Flash - You can still break your neck going head first into an air bag.  It's not like it doesn't take sack to commit to a back off of a dry slope ramp into an air bag.

OP is lucky he didn't wreck himself doing a lawn dart into the air bag, but I give him all the props in the world for wanting to get better and going for it.  It may sound sick hearing someone talk about how many broken bones and concussions they got before they got good.  Those same guys are going to be train wrecks by the time they are in their mid forties to the point where, about the only thing they will still be able to do it talk.

it takes NOTHING to try flips onto an airbag, learn em on snow and theres actually risk ant requires a ball or 2. if i had access to an airbag, i would be tryin dubs. and if it takes u 18 trys to backflip into an airbag, u have a problem, or u have 0 idea on how to throw it

landed my second try haha. But the first attempt did end up with me in the hospital... Just pop! I didnt my first try, and caught my tips on the landing, and got MAAD concussed hahaha

There are some seriously brain damaged people in this thread. Coincidental that they are all the ones who think it is a better idea to potentially paralyze yourself on snow first rather than use an airbag? Hmmm...

And to the OP - yeah baby! 18 tries = more perseverance and character than all the people who are giving you a hard time.

YOu are just scared to throw it completely and the fact that you had an airbag made you less scared to land on your head... so you did. Big deal. Dont be such a pessimistic asshole. Good for him for continuing to try them. One of my friends is the least coordinated person I know as far as tricks, and even after he could do backies and gainers on the tramp, it took him 2 full days of hiking a jump to get them haha. If anything, do listen to this guy

there was a kid at my camp last year who could do the sickest blunt cork nines and rodeo 7's but was scared to death by backflips. he just refused to do them, even on the airbag.

the he broke down and started crying after 10 tries on the airbag.

so good job bud!

Backflips are such a good feeling, congrats. I just started freeskiing this year and I'm pretty stoked that I landed one in 7 or 8 tries after over rotating my first attempts. Yah yah, claim, w/e. Backflips on skis are much easier than on a bike :S Haters are gonna hate man, but ignore them.

Seriously now, props to you for the flip. Always fun to learn something new, on snow or not. Not sure why anyone would hate on you, given that i'm sure if you had snow, you'd be doing flips on it right now.

Flips are a starting point. Can only get better from here though!
