anywhere south of point arena isn't going to have any serious damage... water might sweep up far onto the beaches but thats about it...

Up by crescent city though... 7 or 8 feet could mean some legit potential damage...

and hawaii... who knows how big that could get...

I just looked it up and it traveled at 500 mph across the pacific. A sailboat should have surfed it accross and beat the trans pacific sailing record. That would be awesome

i dont think you understand how tsunami's work. its not like a standing wave, more like a really really strong swell. being on the ocean (not right on the beaches, out to sea i mean) would be a fuckload better than being anywhere near the coast on land.

alright, im saying this with no offense to people who own these boats or anything, because, what do i know? i live on a tiny little lake and have a little 21 foot wakeboat, ive no experience with big yachts and fishing boats and shit. or big waves.


BUT. i feel like if i was the owner of a very big and expensive boat and was at home watching the news and somebody was all like "YO MOTHERFUCKIN TSUNAMIS UP IN THIS BITCH, YOU GOT LIKE 5 HOURS TO GTFO" i would be all like "OH FUCK!!" and rush down to wherever my boat was hanging out, get in the bitch, and drive that motherfucker out to deep ass water, cause the tsunami was probably not even visible is super deep water right? so the boat would just drive over that shit, like, fuck dude.

and once again, i understand that all of the damages and losses of life and injurys that happened today were awful and its a total tragedy, but i just wanted to respectfully point out that detail, im just curious as to weather or not my strategy could have prevented the destruction of what must be millions of maritime stuff.

Yeah, i'd have to agree with you, but at the same time, a lot of people up there who had their boats torn apart dont live ultra close... and some might even have either just shrugged off the tsunami warning because it was so far away, and some might even have just wanted to test their insurance.. lol.

Again.. though... I would have definitely done the same thing and was thinking about that earlier today.

its just not physically possible that a sailboat could ride this wave..there is no physics in this.

If you were out in deep sea, there is no way you would even feel a tsunami in the slightest. A tsunami is not a normal wave, which are controlled primarily by wind and currents. The energy from the earthquake will be moving a relatively small volume of water at an incredibly fast rate. When that water encounters shallower water, it has nowhere to go and is forced upwards and that is when you start to see the 30+ foot waves. But a tsunami triggered from so far away will not be the same as one closer to the quakes epicenter and that's why North America just had a surge of water that fucked up harbors but nothing more.

There is basically no wave/surge in the middle of the ocean. It may travel at 500mph, but you would be hard-pressed to notice anything different. When the water gets shallow, that amplitude increases and that is when shit gets intense.

rogue waves are nothing to be trifled with.

tsunamis are a different animal. gotta get past the continental shelf to have a chance. thats about 100 miles out. 1 full day at 6 knots.

Regardless of how the wave is created, it follows the physics of waves. Out in the deep ocean the amplitude and period of the wave are huge, its when they get in shallow water that the amplitude is forcibly shortened, creating tighter waves and walls of water for your sailboat.

seeing swells with troughs 15 feet deep with crests 100 yards apart, but with no white caps is an amazing sight. those were some of my favorite days out on the pacific. other times, the waves could be 7 seconds apart and 9 feet high, but we were just off the shelf though.

Watching the live feeds of the chopper shots chasing the tsunami and the huge wave thing of mud and debris was sickening. Watching the people in their cars getting engulfed in the thing and watching people trying to run get engulfed aswell was horrid.

I Was joking abou the sailboat and the wave Jesus. I know a sailboat couldn't survive 500 mph and that in deep water tsunamis arnt noticeable. I was just thinking that could be awesome if it was though and one of the big ocean racing boats did it. Haha I sparked quite a bit of angryness
