Coaching high school lacrosse

just got the opportunity to coach my old high schools lacrosse team. I graduated in 2008, was part of a dictrict champ team, 4 year varsity starter. I have a bunch of knowledge on the sport, but Ive never been a coach. i was wondering if anyone had any tips for me. for people familiar with lacrosse, i wanted to run a 231 when were being defended man to man, and a 222 and 141 in a zone. ive been an attackman my entire lacrosse career, so my defensive strategies are basically teach the defense what i hated. anything i disliked i feel like will benefit the defense, because ill know what i hated to see. thanks in advance.

Congrats! I wasn't athletic in high school but I did the lacrosse pages in my yearbook and after seeing how awesome dudes lacrosse was, I wish I could have played. (Although girls lacrosse was kinda wimpy).

I remember all the dudes who used to play for my high school then came back and coached. They were at the mercy of the head coach and they didn't really wind up teaching us anything. Sounds like you'll be running a lot of line drills at first.

well i got the HEAD coaching job, so i wont be at the mercy of anyone but myself. I plan on running them, but not as much as i was run a few years back. in practice i always wanted to run game like scenarios to simulate game play. i did play hours and hours of wall ball, and im gonna make my guys do a half hour or so at the beginning of practice. my philosophy is that make practices really hard, so that games are easy and the kids look forward to them. thats what my coaches did, and i always felt like the hard work was done in practice, and the games were just running through it all.

basically on track only thing i would add to defense is teaching to slide proficiently...but that would prob fall under the category of things i hated in a good defense

haha right. im gonna run a lot of adjacent slides. i think having a good offense means knowing how a good defense operates, and vice versa. my defensive knowledge is limited to how to get around it

Indoor and outdoor lacrosse is my sport. Been playing since the sport came around my town 7 years ago, and still plan on playing in college. Rock on, hope you use all your lax skills to teach all the young laxers the best sport out there. LAX ON

i know when a kid i played with came back to coach my senior year...we gave him no respect and basically made fun of him the whole time. it'll probably happen to you too.

Get your self a whistle, smoke the fuck out of them, and do the sprints/runs/workouts with them.

One of my coaches was 50 years old and could out bench most of the team, out run almost everyone, and keep up on the sprints, very motivating to work with a guy with that sort of work ethic.

Focus first on motivating the team, building them up into a team and then focus on the plays. That shit will work its self out. Also get a D coach.

Honestly, get some books. There are a looottt of great lacrosse coaching books that will tell you everything you need from formations to practice.

Bob Scott's book "Lacrosse Technique and Tradition" is a good one to start with. It has to be at least 20 years old by now (you'll know it when you see the pics in it) but it's still a good resource.

search around on some lacrosse forums as they will be able to help you a LOT more than here. This is one that has everything you could need. I'm on there all the time.

make sure to run man up/ man down drills in practice. that is one thing that is often overlooked by coaches but can be really important in winning games.

ill be doing a shitload of these. i didnt play with any of these kids, i was older than all of them i guess so theres no one i was teammates with that im now coaching. I was pretty well respected anyway, captain for three years, and just friends with everyone. but i plan on doing everything with them that i make them do. Im not gonna be that 500lb coach that makes players run sprints when they themselves cant make it to the fridge without grabbing an inhaler. my coach used to do this, and if he beat any of us he'd make those kids do extra sprints. ill probably do something along those lines too.

i know i am a girl, but i play defense in lacrosse.

on of the biggest things that our coach emphasizes is footwork. we do a lot of agility drills to keep our feet moving and a lot of man down drills.

also, not sure if it is as important in guys lacrosse, but talk. talking on the field makes any defense better because then everyone knows what is going on where.

call for help early. its better to call for help and not need it than to get smoked.

agreed. talking is HUGE. a defense that knows where they stand on the field, where the ball is, whos next in the slide rotation, where their man is, is tough to beat. im giving our goalie a lot of freedom in keeping his defensemen talking.

one thing our goalie does is yell out where the ball is so if someone face gaurds for a sec then they always know where the ball is. it helps so much.

you sound like you are gonna make a good coach. i coached youth lacrosse and reading books helped a lot. they supply good plays and drills. also, uslacrosse.com has a coaches section thats pretty legit.

Best play ever. We called it riot in youth league. It never failed. Of course in HS lax, one Dman always comes and trucks the whole pile, so its not quite as effective. Believe me, i've tried

I was assistant coach to my lacrosse team after I tore my ACL. I hope you have a lot of patience, I wanted to take my stick to a lot of the girls heads. Girls lacrosse is so frustrating compared to playing guys lacrosse.

listen to this from a high school player one dont over do sprints it gets people not wanting to come back to practise or pre season like the freshman and dont do 3 vs 4 all practise long it sucks and it gets so boaring for more ips on it pm me

Fuck that. I played competive lacrosse from Grade 5 until I finished HS, and I have 10,000x more respect for the coaches that beat my ass to the ground, than those who were "chill". I hated them for every minute of sprints, but loved them when the results actually showed.

as an attackman my favorite is the 231 where there is more freedom. but 141 works really well if the picks are set correctly and you have some good attackmen that can turn and shoot well

a 141 is my favorite offense, but you just have to know when to use it. unless you have two good crease guys the offense will suck, and if youre playing man then its useless too.

yes but over doing makes you throw up we run 3 miles in the warm up takes anout 27 min the we do lune drills then we do 5 min sprints the 4 vs3 for anothe half hour then then we to 10 morn min of sprints then end practise its out raguse

i would want them man to man just using adjacent slides when necessary, because its the most annoying thing ever to be playing offense and to have a guy locked on you, but we just dont have the depth for that. we dont have lines of defensemen to be cycling through, and locking a man down is going to exhaust them, id like to at least have the option of running a zone if they can protect the goalie well enough.
