I quit skiing in Michigan basically to go to the gym instead and do leg extensions and cardio and just working out in general (I've never belonged to a gym before and worked out 5 days a week for an hour or more each day).

My performance out west suffers because well first day I am huffing and puffing around due to the altitude. Then by the 3rd day my legs are just burning up by noon every day.

So last trip around I up the ante on the prep. I arrive in SLC...and buy 8 packs of gatorade and over $27 in beef jerky (bulk). I buy yogurt, chocolate milk, and I have been taking a multi-vitamin. I don't usually eat breakfast, but I did out west. Just for the carbs.

You might be saying why all that yogurt and shit. I read about "anti-leg burning pills" and they basically were vitamins chock full of vitamin d and calcium. So I figured eh, if I just dose hard on my dairy products this should be sufficient. Everyone knows dehydration is a big issue for east coasters out west so that explains the 2 gatorade at all time model. Then beef jerky because every day after I sit down and eat a fat burger for lunch....I feel a "lunch time energy rush" 1.5 hours later and I got enough energy to not want to collapse.

You can always straight line is down the mountain but sometimes its not appropriate given the terrain so you GOTTA sit and turn and keep your speed in check (At least at my skiing ability). And I need that extra energy so I can fuckin turn.



MY LEGS ARE STILL BURNING WTF.

So at this point I basically say alright fatty - time to get to the gym it since your quads can't hold up your fat ass in this real mountain shit.

Now like I have been saying I been hitting the gym and basically lowering my BMI and becoming as lean as possible while building some muscle groups up and just toning I guess you would say others.

I guess my post here is to ask you guys

WHAT THE FUCK ELSE CAN I DO TO STOP MY LEGS FROM BURNING? HOW DO I SLAY ALL DAY LIKE SAGE? Do I switch to the all PBR and raman diet?

You have to learn how to ski efficiently.

Your legs will burn a lot less.


But....I'm pretty sure everyone's legs burn when they ski..its just a part of it...

learn to ski better (meaning, ski more often), you'll be using your lower and upper body more efficiently. and dont be a bitch about it. not great advice, but more or less the straight and narrow on your question.

nothing you can do in the last few days. if you want a real work out plan, that will work, but its long term, pm me.

BTW leg extensions are fairly useless, they are the tricep kickback of leg exercises. They are a finishing movement, not a primary movement.

im from illinois and get like 4-5 sloped days a year during winter, then during spring break we head out to colorado for 2 weeks and im skiing open to close with only a lunch break and maybe a snack break. moguls, groomers, park or backcountry and i dont get tired till the end of the day. when i have to hike i can barley breath cause of the altitude and i need to stop every 50 feet tho lol. maybe its cause im 17 and in shape from swimming and waterpolo. idk just try swimming 5000 yards a day before you leave. do alot of kicking/core work

It's just the altitude man, you aren't gonna feel good till youve been out here for a few weeks, just a fact of life.

actually the best thing you can do, especially if youve been working out, is rest. seriously stop working out completely. it will allow your body to fully recover, and perform at its best in 5 days.

if you really want, throw in some yoga. 1 or 2 sessions

this would be fine if he had like 10-14 days to taper, but he has 5. It all depends how hard he was working out. If he was really pushing himself, i would absolutely say, shut it down completely, except maybe a light cardio session.

if he wasnt working out super hard, then ya a taper would work well. i wtill dont think he should do as aggressive a taper as you are suggesting though. it doesnt allow for sufficient recovery.

i dont wanna try and argue about this, but if he is aggressively working out he needs to taper more then not. you cant take your body from running 5 hard miles to nothing for 5 days. if you aren't working out that hard then just slow it down even more

When your legs begin to burn its because you've reached what's called "lactate threshold" that is, the exercise intensity at which lactic acid begins to build up in your blood. So basically to stop your legs from burning you just have to increase your threshold. Lactate threshold occurs during anaerobic exercise a.k.a short, high intensity efforts (and the opposite of aerobic). When your body switches from aerobic to anaerobic work depends on your fitness level. To increase your anaerobic threshold you can either build a really strong aerobic base so your body only goes anaerobic at the highest intensity efforts; or you can physically increase your lactate threshold by doing high intensity workouts (i.e plyos) so that when the anaerobic phase does kick in you can last longer without the burning. For best results do a combination of both, but that would take a few months of training so maybe for next year...I'm by no means an expert in this field but I ran xc in high school and am currently a sponsored cyclist so I know somewhat what I'm talking about.

Seriously though, im finally just now at the point where my legs dont hurt after a pow day and I've had A LOT of them this season. Just takes time.

As mentioned, wall sits are pretty much the only thing that helps me... that and when you stand with your toes on a ledge and lift your body up and down.. forgot what you call that.

dont be so tight when you ski.

i live in kansas and every time i go to colorado i always outski every one im with because i always stay loose and dont get tense.  you stay tense then those bumps just take it out of you. stay loose and you will last alot longer.  this is coming from a guy who is 5-8 and 135lb, by no means a muscular guy.

Everyone suffers from this in the west for the first week or so of skiing. Its all a matter of just skiing more so that you become used to it. My legs still burn after i get done skiing, and i've gone 45 times this year its just dealing with it and streching before you go.

As for doing excersize lots of leg curls and doing squats will help a ton, as well as running up and down stairs for endurance and leg strength.

Try to use your bone structure more than your muscles. This is most likely easier said then done but i got it on lock cuz i have been skiing since i could stand.

Ski everyday like me. I also are from michigan and the first time I skied pow here, I thought I was going to die. It takes a while to get used to but once you get used to it, It sure is one fun time.

muscle endurance is key in this situation. like some ppl said above, just do wallsits for as long as possible like whenever you're just chillin, and then do some plyometrics and shit. but ya, if you're hitting the gym, you wanna be doing a lot of sets of a lot of reps on a lower weight than your full potential. the key is getting to that point where you feel the burn in your legs, but are still able to continue, and then you keep going until its actually impossible to go on. and then, if your legs still burn, there are a few massages you can perform on yourself to move the lactic acid out of there and give you a bit of short term relief

oh hell yeah i still have a blast in the MW, its just I LOVE the skiing here, maybe im just pumped because I just had the best pow day of my life.. Oh and to the OP, you will always be tired after a hard day of riding pow, its practically impossible to avoid

your legs are still burning because your just not aclimated and its just gonna be tougher for you. air is thinner, and therefore, harder to get oxygen and your muscles just arent used to functioning on such little oxygen, therefore your body goes into anaerobic respiration and theres lactic acid buildup. it really doesn't have much to do with strength. it takes a couple days to get the basic acclimation, but i think its something like 6 months til your able to function like you nowmally would at a lower altitude. You don't need to do crazy workouts you just have to wait til you get acclimated. im not sure, but maybe there are certain methods to speeding up the acclimation process
