Cool Animal of the Day Thread

I'd say about 80% of my everyday life is spent learning about cool things related to wildlife and plants and every time I see/hear about something really cool all I want to do is tell somebody, so I'm going to share with you a rad animal or plant of the day (or as close to daily as possibly given my schedule)!

If no one cares, I'll probably just stop doing it but it's worth a shot!

Last night I was watching a documentary about water birds and I have to say that the shoe billed stork is by far the most dinosaur-like bird I've seen as of yet. It's beak looks like it could destroy you.

The shoe-billed stork, or Balaeniceps rex "B-rex", is native to the tropics of Eastern Africa and feeds on large fish, rodents, young crocodiles, waterfowl, snakes, etc. It's populations are currently in decline due to habitat destruction and the still legal bird trade in many African countries.

Blobfish are not that cool. They just look ridiculous. Here's something that's cool....

The bombardier beetle stores two chemicals in two separate compartments in its abdomen (hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide). When threatened, the beetle combines the two chemicals in a mixing chamber causing a reaction producing a boiling liquid which it then shoots directly at its predator or threat. The beetle can aim with incredible accuracy and the beetle goes unharmed by this violent reaction.

I think the beezyhog is cooler. Results when you breed a ski bum with a hedgehog.

Interests include getting tattoos, shredding pow, and curling up into little balls and being fucking awesome.

Slime molds are cool. They usually exist as single cell amoebas in nature, digesting food and moving around slowly when conditions are good. When conditions are not good, they team up and join together to make a compound organism. The group doesnt move very far, maybe only a few feet, but it does so with single coordination and direction. The organism can also fruit, creating a stalk to which it raises a ball of spores. These spores disperse and start more little slime molds. We dont have any idea how this creature truly works.

Turritopsis nutricula - the immortal jellyfish. It can revert to a polyp stage, even if sexually mature, so its possible that there are jellyfish that have been floating around for thousands, maybe millions, of years. Possible, anyways.

I appreciate that some people will value this thread : ). Absolutely feel free to post in here if you have some ideas. I'll try to stick to my one radical animal/plant promise a day for all you kids that are interested in things OTHER than that stupid blob fish thing.

PISTOL SHRIMP: they can kill smaller animals by snapping its claws together really fast. It shoot out bubbles when i collapses its claw and according to the video when the bubble collapse it reaches the temp of the sun I will try to embed but youtubes new code doesnt like me

The Sand cat.

AKA

The cutest animal alive. They are indigenous to middle Eastern and african deserts, specifically the Arabian and Pakistani deserts. They grow to about 1 foot long as adults and are essentially fuzzy small perma-kittens that eat bugs X3 AH FUCK I WANT ONE.

Today's entry... Jumping spiders! In the Salticidae family, jumping spiders actively and stealthily stalk their prey before pouncing onto it. They can jump up to 50 x their body length and have superb eyesight. Some species have mating dances that rival those of birds of paradise and males emit seismic energy when dancing (see video below at 3:50). If the male fails and the female is unimpressed, she will eat him.
