Tore my Meniscus

so i tore my Meniscus today, pretty sure i bruised it when i landed backseat on a front flip, then when i pushed off to the lift my knee gave way. it popped out of the socket, then back in. it killed like a bitch, got and Xray and i looks like i tore my Meniscus. anyone else done this? will i need surgery? im going to Utah in 4 weeks, will i be good to go?

ive done this in both of my knees. But I cant afford surgery so whatever. Basically, dont sit cross legged for too long, or throw yout leg like that, because itll either lock, and you have the joy of popping it back, or it pop, and then immed pop back in.

happened to my dad. got surgery and now has a perfectly fine stride with only about 1 month of real recovery(2.5 of not going as hard as you can )

I had a small tear in mine from skiing, never really got anything done about it, just stayed off it as much as possible and I stopped skiing for a little bit. It still bothers me once and a while (two years later), after a good workout/game/practice/day of skiing. Id suggest talking to your doctor and seeing what they suggest. You might need surgery to repair it if its decently sized. good luck.

Both of my menisci are torn, any lateral movement hurts like a bitch (ie catching an edge, hard carves) but normal day to day shit doesnt hurt too bad, when it gets real cold out they start to hurt.

Probably should get surgery but fuck it.

GET IT FIXED.. NOW.. have them take out the meniscus and NOT repair it and you will be fine for your trip. If you get your meniscus taken out it will be an hour long surgery and you will be feeling great in 2 days, if you get it repaired it will be months of HELL. Also dont just ignore it because it will come back and kick your ass later, believe me from experience

Dude. Taking OUT your meniscus will cause HELLA worse problems in the long run... Arthritis etc.

It really depends on how bad it's torn. Both of mine are torn and it only bugs me when it's really cold outside. Went to a specialist and she said I'm good to go for now and taking them out is not necessary at this point because it would cause more harm than good.

None of us know how bad yours is though so go see a specialist.

personally the arthritis is worth it to me.. i know that sounds terrible but in MY experience repaired meniscuses fail every time if you are active at all. Also just ignoring it will cause it to heal wrong if its not a perfect tear and I can almost guarentee it will tear again if you remain active. Ive torn my meniscus' 5 times in total and getting them out has been amazing

Well each to their own... but arthritis prob isn't worth it to of people.

And a meniscus tear is one of those "wear and tear" injuries that will happen to the majority of the population at some point in their life. Especially if you have a career that involves a lot of walking or you were really active in your younger years. Living with a meniscus tear definitely isn't the worst thing in the world if it's minor.

(Not saying yours wasn't bad.)

But it really depends on the severity of the injury...

So prob not the best idea to recommend someone getting theirs out before you know how bad it is and subject them to life-long arthritis. What's best for you isn't going to be best for everyone. (Not trying to be mean just getting that out there.)

I know you're just trying to help a brotha out cuz you don't want people to go through what you've been going through.

yeah youre probably right man.. it was just annoying repeatedly trying to repair it and going through 2 months of hell just to have it re-tear the very next sports season.. hell i missed my senior football and track season because of it and may have lost out on college sports (which im happy about now)

You'll probably need surgery, it depends. I did mine and the meniscus actually flipped when it tore and kinda got jammed in my knee, and I couldn't straighten my leg out...it was weird. I had surgery two days later and they repaired it (versus just cleaning it up) so it was a 6 month recovery. The non-repair surgery, when they just shave it out is like a 4-6 week.

went to the orthopedic today, he put me in an immobilizer for one week, its not completely torn apparently so i should have a quick recovery. i just wont skii these next couple weeks, and ski Utah

I'm not gonna lie, this is a pretty ignorant way to look at his situation. If they are capable of repairing it, that should be the only decision. I'm assuming this kid is young, and having your meniscus taken out (especially if it was a large tear) when your still a teenager is basically guaranteeing arthritis and a sore knee down the road, leaving you with knees of a 70 year old man when you're about 40.

people dont realize how easily they re-tear though.. from personal experience i wish i had gotten it taken it out originally.. i had 3 surgeries trying to repair them that took 3 sports seasons and like 10 months just to turn around and have them both taken out anyways

I definitely tore mine in my right knee its weird one day in like december i cased a jump and my right knee just hurt but I skied on it till the end of the day, then when I went to walk my knee was all stiff and i couldnt fully straighten it out. I didnt ski for a few weeks and its felt better but it still stiffens up sometimes.i feel fine when I ski but sometimes ill take a little spill and twist my leg a little and it hurts again and my leg locks up and feels unstable, and then ill try walking and it'll be stiff for a few hours but then it will be fine and I can walk normally again. Like right now it feels completely fine and when I ski it does too for the most part but sometimes it'll just stiffen up its weird, I should probably get it checked out but it doesn't affect me too much if i dont fall weird.

It really depends. Both options are a compromise. Repairing it is beneficial in the long run, and the important thing to remember is the further out you are from surgery, the more sturdy that repair is. But menisci take a long time to heal fully, because they barely recieve any blood flow. Having the tears removed is good because there's no repair to protect. A buddy tore his and had the chunk removed, and he was back at football practice givin er in like 2 weeks. After 2 months he said he was at 100%. You are setting yourself up for pain in the future, but if they are minor tears, probably no more than you would experience anyways after a lifetime of shredding hard and plating sports.

tore my meniscus two years ago playing soccer.  I would definitely recommend getting it fixed. before I got mine surgically repaired every time i bent my knee it would pop and hurt like a bitch! Once I did get it fixed it was a 4 week recovery with a couple weeks on top of that to get it really back and working.

Had two tears, both in the same one. You can either let it heal (depending on how big the tear is) or get micro surgery on it which I don't think is two bad. Pretty quick recovery.
