injuries suck, but the entire NS community doesn't need to know whenever someone sprains their wrist and such. also, i'm sure that some people on here have helpful tips and experiences, but i would rather see a doctor and get the real scoop on my injury and the correct ways to approach the healing process.

so a creative idea, perhaps a bit impractical

Very good points. I was just suggesting this new section because I feel like everyday there are a couple of new injury threads showing up in 'ski gabber'.

I also agree that the doctors opinion should be the best/only advice taken. But I think if you hear about other injuries then you might be able to ask better questions next time you see the doctor or learn some tips/tricks about rehab and surgery that are not always obvious.

Yea this seems like a good idea, but I feel like people would go to it saying "oww I just broke my leg" and 90% of NS would respond "Go smoke some herb".

Dear Dr. NS. I faceplanted under the chairlift today when there was a really hot girl passing above. What kind of rehab do I have to do to bring my ego back to 100%?


As said before, I'm not sure if NS is the best place to get advice on injuries. We're skiers, not doctors.

I'd trust Dr. TGR a lot more than Dr. NS... visit Gimp Central from the TGR forums for that.

But it would be kinda cool to have here, too.

Notice how many injury threads there were lately. Two different ones titled "Dr. NS".

Again, I agree that this community should not be the number one source of information for injuries but it may be helpful to hear what other people went through and how to deal with it. There is a lot of good practical advice on here that a doctor will not always make obvious.

As far as lawsuit, couldn't we just put a big disclaimer on here? I mean couldn't you sue someone if you got hurt trying a trick because you took advice from a thread; "So and so told me to huck it like this, and I did, and now I'm injured"...

THis is true, however these threads are being made anyway. It is probably a good idea to have an "injurie advice" section. Not just for diagnosis's but for rehab queries and that kind of thing.

Sorry to be a dick, but it's essentially the same thing.

So I guess I'm not being completely clear or my posts aren't being read correctly but I'm not suggesting a 'diagnosis and treatment' forum section (yes I know I said it would be called 'Dr. NS') but rather a more of place to talk about injuries, down time, prevention, and rehab...pretty much exactly like 'gimp central' on TGR...which I will now consult.

Well, I'm not going to argue this any more. Thanks for the feedback.

I can do backflips and I am confident in the advice I give to others about them, but that doesn't make me a doctor. It's not the same thing, otherwise by your logic anyone capable of giving advice should have an MD.

yea exactly.

doing a backflip is something a lot of people on here can do. And they can tell you exactly how to do, but you've still got a chance at falling and hurting yourself.

practicing medicine is something most likely no one on here can do. And the odds of them giving you good advice is just about nil.

I lied...I'm going to beat this dead horse again. I hate horses. Sorry for the late response.

Again, I'm not suggesting a 'diagnosis and treatment' section. And that is not my logic. For example: I have had 3 knee injuries with subsequent surgeries, missing ski seasons, rehab, etc.

Does this make me qualified to diagnose someones' knee injury. Nope.
But do i know more than the average NSer about the process? Probably.
Is every injury the same or have the same symptoms? Nope.

So, if someone asks ,"I was skiing and twisted my knee and now it's swollen. What is wrong with me? I really want to ski pow tomorrow. Can I go?" or something along those lines, what is my response?

"See a doctor (an orthopedic surgeon). In the meantime R.I.C.E."

Notice how I didn't say, "Oh you probably tore your meniscus because thats how I did mine. Just take some Advil and go for it". or something like that.

If the OP follows with more questions like, 'what did it feel like?' I may throw in something like, "When I had my injury, I heard a pop, and my knee swelled, but injuries happened differently for everyone. Why risk doing further damage? See a doctor, he will tell you whats wrong".

Do you see what I'm getting at? This of course can be expanded to rehab and motivation for others, since missing and entire season is very difficult and demoralizing.

So yeah, I may have not given the best example, but I hope you can at least understand what I'm trying to say. I guess, for some reason, I have hope that there can be quality responses regarding injuries on newschoolers. I should probably change my thinking. There is always TGR for gimp central, but I prefer NS.

Also, there are many different ways to backflip. Just because you are confident in your backflip ability (I've seen your edits, you're very good) doesn't mean you have the best way to do them. Now would I probably listen to your advice after seeing your skill? Yes. But I would read many others advice and tips as well? Yup. I don't know if that was related...

Well I agree with you when I was injured I liked talking to others in similar situations. How long their recovery took, complications/limitations, what they did in therapy. BY NO MEANS would it be a diagnosis forum and anyone dumb enough to take serious medical advice from an internet forum probably would have been weeded out by Darwinism anyway.

It would eliminate all the injury threads in other forums and whn you were hurt you could pop over and find what others have gone through and check out gnarly pics. Not saying it should or will be created but not a bad idea.

As far as lawsuits not even possible NS is not liable if some kid performed his own acl surgery becuase kangbangs dad is a doctor and told him how to do it(SARCASM). People(even on NS) are smart enough to go to a doctor if need be your body will let you know. If it were possible they wouldnt allow the advice that is already given in injury threads in SG/NSG.

The more I think about this the more it makes sense. Let's say you're scrolling through some threads, looking at some really funny ones, and then you see "torn ACL, season's over"...downer. Just put those all in one place so only people who want to see them have to. Plus there are probably hundreds of injury threads that say the same thing.

No hard feelings taken. The best thing to happen to an idea is for someone to point out all of the flaws. I think my view on skiing/training/warm ups has changed (after a couple ACLs) which is why I thought it might be good to have this section.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback. +K to all.

If you're hurt and looking for advice online, go to webmd and jump to your own conclusion as to what's wrong with you. ("my rash means I have inoperable brain cancer!")


Come to ns when you want some advice about skiing and everything related to doing it....but not about being hurt or sick. No one on here is qualified in that regard.

All the points are so true. But also a "dr ns" forum would be good as people could provide support for each other, injuries suck.

You could add in training/nutrition/workout information as well if you wanted a bit more diversity. But, ski gabber usually does a pretty good job covering these things, even if it isn't the best place for them.

if we would ever get this section, i'd personally look after it so that only one thread would be in it, it'll be stickied and in ALL CAPS saying:
"GO SEE A DOCTOR"

i'm not saying the idea of having an internet forum for medical advice on ski-related injuries and recoveries is a bad idea, i'm just saying it's a bad idea to do it on NS ...

I will give you an example of why I think this section should exist (again, as stated above, I would not call it "Dr. NS", injures would make up part of the section and be discussed, but not diagnosed and treated).

Example, Tom Wallisch:

Also

Freeskiing has changed. Training has gone from "homosexual" to necessary if you want to compete at the level it is today. If you ask any pro on the halfpipe or slopestyle US team if their gym training has helped, they'll say yes. Look at Tanner. Ask Scholpy. Ask some people on this site. If you want to get better, training will help. If you want to make it through the whole season, healthy, training is necessary.

And to the other part of this section. Anyone who has had a season ending injury knows how frustrating that process can be (2 ACLs here). Of course no one on this site is medically qualified to diagnose/treat and injury. I was merely suggesting a place to keep all the injury/training related threads. There are at least three on the front page of ski gabber at one time. As some else said before, it is nice to talk with other people to see how they dealt with their injuries.

I know we are not all pro skiers, and don't/can't train like them but if I can learn something new that will make me ski strong through the day and not get hurt when trying new things, then I want to know what that is. I also want to let people who do have season enders to know it's not the end of the world and that they'll make it. This is why I want to this section to exist.

I'll let this die here. Thanks for the comments.

I like the idea. I think some sort of disclaimer would be needed though. What if every time you opened the forum a legal disclaimer written by Bishop or whoever popped up saying no one on NS is qualified to give legit medical advice and they are not liable if you hurt yourself more, and then you would have to accept it to get into the forum? Gimp Central works on TGR just fine, I don't see how this could hurt NS.
