Backpacks

just curious, wanna know what people keep in their backpacks when they ski, and even what backpack they have
i've got my camera, ipod, keys, phone, tripod, duck tape, and usually a gatorade in a soloman or dakine backpack

Dakine Helipro. got my shovel, probe, beacon (when not on body), extra gloves, glove liners, two or three bandanas, a cliff bar or two, an apple or two, 1 to 2 liters of water, chest mount for go pro (when not on body), shoelace, toothbrush, toothpaste.

i dont ski with my backpack i just leave it thrown in the park of at the bottom of the lift

but i always have :
water
sandwich
cookies (prob. oreos)
and fruits

also cloth, shoes, socks, stuff

Black Diamond Covert 32L with Avalung. Shovel, probe, spair gloves, glove liners, spare goggle lense, bandana, sandwich/fruit and water if in the BC, camera, beanie, car keys, wallet.

my backcountry back def. has skins, probe, shovel... beacon is always worn.  On some days i'll bring out the snow saw.  But other essentials are:

-extra goggle lens (or just extra pair of goggles)
-extra mits/gloves/hat
-water
-light weight long sleeve layer
-camera/go-pro
-snack
-extra socks.  don't really know why, but i figure that its one of those, you're really going to want them if you need them and don't have them.  wet, cold socks just isn't one of those things you want to "deal" with until you get home.

Most days, 10 year old Dakine backpack, with extra gloves, beers (number is dependant on my bank balance and daily festivities), a sandwich (Sauerkraut & Porkchop on kaiser or guacamole and salami on pita were some I can remember), and maybe an energy drink if I'm feeling masochistic.

If I'm going out of bounds... probe, shovel, water, goggle wipe, extra gloves. My out of bounds pack is a Old Style Pilsner backpack that I sewed on a shovel handle sleeve.

I have a 32L BD Anarchist with an avalung that I use when I'm touring
-shovel
-probe
-snow saw
-rope (cutting cornices, tying on for ski cuts)
-skins
-extra gloves, extra base layer
-puffy jacket (on cold days when we're going high up)
-food, water, etc

I forgot to put skins on my list... but that's a given with the prove and shovel.

One thing I don't have in my pack that I wish I had room for is a first aid kit. I've noticed that most of you didn't list a first aid kit either. I think only two people so far have one. Most people I tour with don't carry one either (and most of them are OFA 3, Avi Level 1, types... I think it's a really easy thing to overlook, until of course, shit hits the fan. I would carry one if I had more room, and I am considering purchasing a new backpack that has the room for it.

first aid kits are really essential, not necessarily for when something really bad happens, but if you fill it with some basic medicines they can save your day !
(ie. taking a lift up and getting nauseae or diarrea from something you ate, just pop a pill and enjoy your day!)

i've helped out friends numerous times with my kit ...

another thing that is really easy to do and will save yourself from unnecessary stress in the backcountry is duct tape. wrap some duct tape around your poles. It's more of a snowboard thing, to do quick fix jobs on their bindings, but as a skier, it can save your ass if your skins aren't staying on your skis and you need to get out of there.

to be honest... I have no idea. I don't remember when I put the toothbrush and paste in the backpack, but they're in a ziplock bag, and I just haven't bothered to take them out. Comes in handy when I'm staying in a backcountry cabin overnight.

I have a 30L Black Diamond Outlaw. It carries my shovel, probe, skins, water, warm mitts, spare face covering, spare lens, sunglasses, a clif bar, a first aid kit, my Leatherman, extra insulating layer. You know, essential shit for backcountry/slackcountry. If I'm at the local mountain, I leave my beacon in my pack until I decide its time to make some sidecountry laps.

I keep extra gloves and liners, extra goggles, and an extra toque. A hoodie or a sweatshirt, and a pair of sneakers to wear home (fucking transit). Pounds and pounds and pounds of food, like four of everything. Four sandwiches, four bananas, four muffins, etc. I get hungry. Lots and lots of water. All of my passes, my wallet, my ipod if it's not in my pocket. And everything else I'm too lazy to take out before I ski
