Glidecam Tips

I recently pick one up and have finally got it balanced.

Does anyone have tips or video on using it to get its full potential?

what camera are you shooting with? it definitely took me a while to get 'good' at using it (although i'm still really far from good).

a good thing to keep in mind is that it's not magic. it will help, but you have to put the time into making sure you actually know how to use it. support almost all of the weight with your handle hand, and lightly grasp the main pole to turn it. i see way too many people with a firm grasp on the central pole; that won't stabilize things at all.

we need duncan and steen in here, they could both give some great advice.

Its a Sony DCR - SR45 and i have a wide angle on it.

I figured out holding onto the center post.

Hopefully they do come in here because any help is good help

word, just practice a ton, that's really what it takes. you just have to develop a feel for it over time; i'm still in the process of that.

i know that guys who actually use steadicams in hollywood spend years learning how to use those things

Practice Practice Practice. The only tips i can think of are what has already been said also be ready to make your moves before hand and do everything slowly. The slower you are able to change direction of the camera the better it will look.

practice makes perfect.

Having the post as long as possible helps a lot too. the longer it is, the better and more balanced it feels.

Remember that you still have to control the camera, don't be afraid to move the center pole around to get the shot you want just make sure you're not actually holding any weight up at all.

Your arm will get sore, take breaks in runs and eventually you'll be able to do it all day no problem.

Check if its balanced often, even the slightest change can make it a little off.

Also, if your setup is light (hddslr, etc) you might need to weigh it a little forward to compensate for wind when following.
