you can do it at any gym. I just get the WOD on my phone and go hard at the local gym. sure, i get a lot of weird ass looks, but who gives a shit.


allthough, it would be 10X better to go to an actual crossfit gym.

Been doing a decent amount of crossfit since my unit loves it so much. Usually incorporate it into my workouts. We also have two legit crossfit gyms on post which makes things really convenient.

you can scale the weights to something you can do if you can't do the prescribed ones, just know when to go heavy/light

Just do it.

You can always take excersises from the workouts and do them on your own I guess. But you don't get the full effect.

I only got 175. Finished wallballs in 9 something and my double unders were brutal. I couldn't string them together for the life of me. Super frustrating. I don't have muscle-ups so I wasn't concerned about that.

Did 12.5 today. Only a measly 50. Thrusters were whatever, but when your 6'3" or 4"ish and 255lbs and don't do nearly enough pull-ups let alone chest to bars, it was about what I expected.

I was pretty bummed there wasn't really any heavy stuff in any of the wods. Sure there were 165 and 210 snatch's in 12.2, but you had to get there first....

If there is a crossfit gym around, I would definitely check it out. To an extent there is a bunch you can do without much equipment, but if you want to be serious about it, there is lots of lifting (olympic and power). All weights can be scaled depending on where you're at, but proper form and technique are super important because lots of the lifts are really technical.

There is also the community factor. I love the people in my gym. There is a real sense of camaraderie. For example, all the people at my gym who competed in the Open workouts are going out for supper and then back to the gym for games and whatever on Saturday.

In my mind, it's been such a phenomenal experience and I don't see myself working out at another gym for a long time.

give it a go, a lot of times watching the videos of the workouts each day and reading the faqs on the main site can give you hints on how to scale the exercises. for weighted exercises start light while just getting started while you figure it out. youd want to pick something light enough to keep intemsity but still makes it tough to finish. eventually youll figure out where you need to be (for example i find around 80% of the given weight to be about right for me). have fun with it

I don't understand why people act like "Crossfit" is a new thing. Working out is always intense if you do it right. It's not like jump squats and pushups were invented last year.

crossfit is badass. i've only done a few sessions, but i work with a trainer at my gym and we've learned to incorporate a lot of the concepts.

If it weren't so pricy, and i wasn't so broke...i'd switch. But paying 30/mo for gym access is much more affordable right meow

it is not better than a "gym workout". a good "gym workout" is better for hypertrophy, explosiveness, and pure strength than ANY crossfit workout.


also, to be a certified Crossfit trainer, all you have to do is drop $1000 and spend a weekend "learning" the movements. there are soooooooo many quacks teaching god awful form.



but as long as it keeps you fit, and you enjoy it, keep doing it. it just doesnt line up at all with my fitness goals nor my desires.

My crossfit gym rarely follows main site programming and has a bias on strength.
The owners (husband and wife) are both competitive olympic weightlifters. A bunch of the other coaches are also competitive olympic weightlifters. The Canadian Junior Weightlifting gold medalist trains at our gym. Our coaches do not teach bad form.

do you want a cookie? your gym teaches good form. they are supposed to.

and FYI, its not a Crossfit gym if it doesnt follow the programming. thats another thing i dont like- Crossfit patented the name, so you cant advertise your gym as crossfit unless the instrucors are "certified" and you follow the programming.

No. And yeah, they do teach good form and I'm stoked about it. It's more than can be said for a lot of other gyms (Crossfit or not).

Our gym is a Crossfit affiliate (they pay the fees and our coachs have been "certified"). Not every cf affiliate follows the main site. Our programming is similar, but more focused than the main site, which can be all over the place.

I've been doing it at our local crossfit gym for roughly a year now and have been following it for a few. It's not perfect, but no fitness theory is.

I know, as soon as my muscles start to get tried my i lose proper form but honestly it is better to make sure your form is correct than hurting yourself.

I could argue all day with you about this. I find so many things distasteful about crossfit, compared to a routine tailored specifically to my my goals.


but like i have said many times before- different strokes for different folks. what ever it is that gets you out and exercising, embrace it for yourself.

But i love crossfit. main site programming is kinda garbage, but it works if you don't have a legit crossfit gym to go to that programs..

bumping because my legs and abs are so fucking sore I cant do anything but browse newschoolers. these explosive workouts seem great for preseason strength and endurance training. anybody else on a crossfit rage currently?

I've been coaching at my CrossFit gym since the beginning of October now, and I just had my Level 1 trainer's cert over the weekend.

also competed for the first time in a CF comp a few weeks ago.

one Q, why is it OK to work the same muscle groups a few days in a row? I thought it was generally accepted that giving a certain muscle group a day off was the most beneficial way to build muscle and improve performance. or is CF designed to work different muscles of different intensity day-to-day? I'm very new to this, obviously, what's your take?

The biggest fucking scam in the world. They act like they invented the pull up or the idea of taking short breaks and charge insanely high prices to get certified or join their gyms. "Crossfit" is code for "shit you did already before you joined a gym with nice equipment".

In all honesty, that misconception comes from a bodybuilding mentality. The truth is, 9/10 people are NOT pushing it hard enough, i.e., lifting heavy enough weight relative to their strength level, to need multiple days off before working the same muscle group again.

Additionally, things can be structured in the Westside Barbell way of doing things where they do Dynamic days and pure strength days. For example, a strength day for squatting might involve heavy singles or doubles doing box squats, where a dynamic day might involve lighter weight squats with bands or chains. Somebody who follows westside feel free to correct me on specific exercises, but basically that's an example of how you could do legs multiple times in a week, and on one occasion lift for max effort, and another lift for speed and power.

Here's an example, tonight I did heavy front squat triples/doubles/singles, so tomorrow I won't do heavy squatting. But i will do moderate/heavy power cleans, which will involve leg muscles...and I don't think twice about it.

Have you ever actually done it? More than one time? Reading what somebody else does doesn't count, and "I saw somebody doing it before" also doesn't count.

If that's your understanding of it, you just haven't seen much of it is all.

this is ludicrous. crossfit mentality to me is based around comradery. its as close as Ill ever get to having a "band of brothers" per say. pushing each other and pushing yourself is the best way to improve.

oh and kettlebells.

Wow, thanks for shedding some light on this, you just helped change my view on strength training, not just building for looks. I looked into westside barbell, and they're approach is unlike what I'm accustomed to, but its appealing as shit.

In terms of skiing, which would you consider more beneficial; training for single powerlifts or low weight/high rep intense training like CF demands?

Yeah I'm glad you asked that question man.

And that's another good point that you bring up, most people think that crossfit is all low weight and high reps which couldn't be further from the truth. Certain workouts could be seen as such, such as the most well known benchmark workout we have, "Fran". 21-15-9 Thrusters w/95 lbs. and pull ups. (21 of each, 15 of each, 9 of each, for time). But let me tell you, doing 45 thrusters with 95 lbs is fucking hard.

Back to your question, in crossfit we don't just do light weight and high reps, we do a huge amount of pure strength training (powerlifting) and olympic lifting also. I just PR-ed my front squat last night with a single at 245 lbs. (I weight 167). Nothing incredible but I'm so much stronger now than I was when I just worked at a a normal gym doing stupid isolation exercises and all that stuff.

CrossFit will benefit anybody in any sport a huge amount because you're working on everything you need....speed, power, strength, stamina, balance, coordination, agility, accuracy, etc. By not focusing on just one thing, like a powerlifter does, you can excel at all things. You can be strong in power lifts, without compromising your ability to excel at longer time domains like a 5k because you've built the stamina to handle that as well.

I think Crossfit is good for some stuff and not good for other stuff. If you are looking for decent all around fitness and are not focusing on anything in particular, absolutely do it. I also think that it's good at getting people who might be intimidated by the gym into a gym and starting to use equipment they would never touch because they don't know what to do with it. I also think it's awesome for getting people to LIFT WEIGHT (not trying to generalize here, but especially women who too often seem to be stuck on the eliptical machine and never move anything more than 5lb dumbbells because they are afraid that lifting weights will turn them into men).

If you are looking at specializing though, maybe incorporate some programming, but tailor your workouts to your needs. Crossfitters (even at elite levels) are decent at everything, but masters of nothing.

I went to a Crossfit gym for about a year which really focused on strength and olympic lifting. All of the coaches are competitive olympic weightlifters and they gave me a really good foundation with the basic movements. Since then I have shifted towards olympic lifting now and am starting to compete that way. I never would have come down this path if it wasn't for Crossfit though.

I think it's a good time, the community is great and the workouts are freaking difficult, and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't need specific training, but make sure you have decent coaches that know what they are doing.

That's my 2 cents.
