I completely disagree with a fine.

First of all, he caught the ball, and got 3 steps down before he got his. So I don't believe he was a defenseless receiver. Also, he was making a move to protect himself. If you watch it in slow motion, he was ducking and bringing his arms in, preparing for a hit.

Second, the initial hit was low on his torso. The guy made a clean hit into his arm/ribs. That hit, forced him into the second defender, who was also attempting to him him in the torso.

There was nothing flagrant about the hit. No one was attempting an cheap shot, or "head hunting". There was helmet to helmet contact, but that was because Collie was hit first.

Obviously, I hope he only suffers a concussion, and returns to play as soon as possible. But I don't believe in any way that anyone should be fined/suspended.

this particular hit wasnt as bad as as some recent ones but the NFL has been uneasy about head to head contact hits because of the 3 vicious ones week 8. These hits are deadly, and plus asante sameul (22) was being a fucking asshole and like celebrating when we was like on the ground.

actually a sick game. saw that live and i was thinking to myself 'holy fuck, ease up on the helmet to helmet buddy'

i love watching philly though cause of vick. he's sooooo so exciting. a shitty human being, sure, but a sick qb and a hell of a threat when scrambling. fucker just takes off..

I honestly think there will be a big uproar if someone get's in trouble. This is part of football. Big people, running fast, hitting each other. People were using proper technique, and not "launching" like the announcers said.

And Sammual wasn't celebrating the hit, he was pissed at the refs for making a bad call.

This guy is right. That was an accidental head to head hit. Both defenders were going for a clean tackle. Sometimes it just happens, it's part of football

i was gonna say this. i totally agree with what jblaski (sp?) said, as i watched it, it didn't seem that bad (the intent, not the hit) but i think the nfl is trying to crack down on helmet to helmet hits and other shit that causes injury to protect the players. it was a fumble, but you can't hit someone like that without a penalty.

intent wise, he wasn't trying to injure him but shit happens. i remember a few years ago a saw a game (i think it was gb and oakland) and some receiver got clothes lined by a db, got injured bad and the db was ejected from the game. looking at the replay he was probably just trying to strip the ball, but regardless of intent, you can't do that, and its a penalty (+fine, ejection, etc)

i understand their concern for safety with helmet to helmet hits, but THIS IS FUCKING FOOTBALL. 

these guys are getting paid millions to play the game, SACK UP AND LET THEM HIT.  Last time i checked football was a contact sport.

Im a pro offroad dirtbike racer, and i dont make millions, but there is a real chance of severe injury or paralysis every time i get on the bike. doesnt mean im going to stop racing, but its the same deal,  if you cant stand the heat, GTFO of the sport!!!

Yes it is - huge hits, fast, very very skillful... but the main difference between that and american football is you get taught how to TACKLE PROPERLY when you're at school.....

My point is, you can fuck peoples world's up - yet still not have this head to head shit that literally will kill someone. As was said - remove helmets from American Football.... then we'll see how people get on....

American Football helmets = total false sense of security. You will still get mad big hits.... would love to see that, even if just a one game trial.

Like whoever said earlier, the NFL can't just have a happy medium. They have to bounce from one extreme to another, they can't just be content with fining the most ridiculous hits, and letting everything else go. Leading with your head is one of the most fun things to do in football, I have a butterfly restrictor, so I pull my head back as far as I can, and stick my helmet right in their numbers. It works well, and stops them dead in their tracks. I think the people who run the NFL have forgotten how to play football,and it's sad.

Now....that hit that just occurred in the Packers/Cowboys game. That was bullshit. That was leading with the crown of his helmet, intentionally going for the other guy's head.

That guy should face a big fine/suspension.

People who play rugby don't tackle properly, they just tackle in such a way that it doesn't horribly injure their heads. You obviously can't lead a tackle with your head, and as a consequence, the hits are not as big. I know you'll say "ohhhh Rugby hits are just as big". They aren't, there's not that insane change in momentum. I've personally seen Stirling Mortlock jack people up, it doesn't compare to say Ray Lewis.

Removing helmets from American football is a step in the wrong direction IMO. People forget that helmet to helmets hurt like a bitch, but they're there for a reason, intimidation. You get jacked up by a linebacker who hit you helmet to helmet, you're not gonna run his way anymore.

yea dude... I'm not trying to hate on football, because I do like watching NFL on occasion, but the helmets are fucking stupid.

All these idiots in football just use their heads as weapons. As stupid as that sounds its true. Thats why when all the guys retire they are like fucking vegetables with like half a brain left.

uh, dude the purpose of helmets is not intimidation. or at least it shouldn't be. helmets shouldn't be used as weapons because it's just too dangerous. We now know too much about the effects of head trauma. It was fine back when the NFL was full of slow white guys. But now when you have tons of guys who are 250+lbs and can run a 4.4 40 it's just too reckless having them tackling with their heads. Not too mention getting severe concussions when you are still maturing (middle school, highschool) is just stupid. While removing the helmets is probably extreme and will never happen, something needs to change. There needs to be much stricter rules regarding tackling technique.

and i'm no rugby fan. anybody who says rugby hits are anywhere close to football hits is an idiot. period.

Time to get my claim on . I used to play soccer with that dude in like 2nd and 3rd grade haha. He was hella good but kept plowin fools and took the obvious decision to play football. I have him as a receiver in fantasy he was doin well til he got "rocked". claiming may continue at any given moment.. therefore no backslash is ending shit

You gotta check out rugby league (state of origin especially)

A fair few of those were rugby league style tackles where they can just drop a shoulder without wrapping their arms around the player. They're illegal in union though, so a bunch of those players probably ended up serving suspensions of some sort...

Bullshit. Had Williams not slipped he would have hit him in the back/shoulders. Williams had slipped and that caused the helmet to helmet.



Also bullshit to the guy that hit Collie getting a fine. After three steps you are considered a runner and THEN helmet to helmet is allowed. Also, he got nicked by the helmet and his head slamming into the ground was the one that basically KHTFO.

This is the same problem we are seeing in hockey. Some hits which are done cleanly and without malicious intent can have devastating effects just because of the speed and size of the players. Both teams are playing to win, so what are you supposed to do? Not make the hit cause you are afraid of hurting them and watch them blow by for the score? Or not run to catch the pass because you think the d-men will crush you upon catching? These type of hits are in the nature of the game. No amount of fines or new rules will change this without fundamentally changing the game as well. A clean hit is a clean hit, but that does not mean it will not be bone crushing and devastating.

I was at the game and saw the hit live. It wasn't vicious or intentional in any way. It was accidental helmet to helmet contact and in my opinion shouldn't have even been a penalty. The NFL needs to look at these hits on a case by case basis to issue punishment. There should be fines and suspensions for a lot of the recent hard hits that have occurred, but this wasn't one of them. Shit happens in every sport and there's a risk of injury. Although you hate to see something like this happen, Austin Collie was just unlucky and hopefully he'll make a full recovery.

People would literally die on kick offs. Even if they used a different style of tackling. Imagine the QB unprotected without a helmet as some 300 pound lineman tears into him.

Apply this to logic to skiing. Seth Morrison shouldn't wear a helmet while throwing his body over massive cliffs. Not wearing a helmet would change his style of huck and he wouldn't hit his head against rocks.

The one in the Green Bay/Cowboys game looked bad but aslo wasn't intentional.

A guy like Harrison of the Steelers who seems to consistently ALWAYS get a personal foul for stuff like this several times a season should get a banhammer for a couple games.

Hit was legal. Flag was just because he wasn't getting up.


This shit is going to keep happening in the NFL. They give guys shitloads of pads and helmets, and it means they can hit people in incredibly unsafe ways. This sort of shit doesn't happen in rugby because you actually have to tackle someone properly if you wan't to bring them down and not get hurt.

rugby player are taught proper tackling form, it's retards like you that are taught at a young age to use the helmets as weapons that are hurting the NFL

that being said the guy who hit austin collie did nothing wrong and shouldnt have even gotten a penalty..but the guy in the cowoys/packers game should be suspended for a vicious helmet to helmet cheap shot
