US to spend $200 million a day on Obama's Mumbai visit

The US will be spending a whopping $200 million (Rs900 crore) per day on President Barack Obama's visit to the city.

"The huge amount of around $200 million would be spent on security, stay and other aspects of the presidential visit," a top official of the Maharashtra government privy to the arrangements for the high-profile visit said.

About 3,000 people including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists will accompany the president.

Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already in Mumbai for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.

"Except for personnel providing immediate security to the president, the US officials may not be allowed to carry weapons. The state police is competent to take care of the security measures and they would be piloting the presidential convoy," the official said on condition of anonymity.

It's the US Government in a foreign country that doesn't have the safest reputation.... what do you expect. Armored caravans take a lot of $$$ to fly overseas, so do security personnel, etc. It's not like Obama is the first to leave the US on a diplomatic mission. Newsflash: there's a lot more people living in India than the US, it might be nice to have them as freinds.

If he has business in that area of the world with Pakistan.. go to Pakistan. And why 200 million for that trip? Is he bringing like his ENTIRE fleet of vehicles meaning both planes, all the helicopters, and the like probably 20 different convoy vehicles?

you're right, let's just forget that the Bush era cost roughly $11.5 trillion. no big deal. oh and he (Bush) took 77 trips to his ranch in Crawford at nearly $250,000 a trip (not including security)....im sorry, but you state all these facts about Obama without acknowledging or comparing to the previous president...these are just the first facts that came to mind, I am sure I can add to this if needed...

because you have no clue how tight and well choreographed his visits are. every hour is planned, every route him and his escorts take, every meal, every meeting and he's not confined to just one area. every different place he has to go to, he needs to have secret service scout out the areas, he needs protection along every route at all times while on that route from beginning to end.

I know he needs Secret Service and usually the Presidential Press Corps go with him but that is maximum like 200 to 300 people at most. 3000? Is he bringing all of congress and part of the military with him or something?

Lets not forget that Bush's war in Iraq has ended up costing the US somewhere around 3 trillion dollars. I could also try and explain why it the president would also be putting an emphasis on having a strong relationship with India, but that would be hard to do.

yep. 200 milli seems about right. he is the most highly valued target in the entire motherfucking world.


not to mention, its not like if he didnt go on the trip none of these 3000 people would be not getting paid. it would still cost the same. this isnt just advisors and shit, this is military personell, secret service, ETC. all of these people would be normally working and getting paid to do this shit anyways, its just that now it happens to be india. if the president was staying in the whitehouse instead of india, it would probably cost about 150 million a day. you all think very small.

This isn't news. I guarantee you that Obama, Bush, Clinton, and right on down the line—regardless of what party they belong to—have spent more money on single day trips than anyone could possibly imagine.

If you were pointing out some sort of significant, clearly wasteful spending, it'd be one thing, because no one with a brain would argue that there is PLENTY of wasteful spending in the US government. But, it's this "GOTCHYA!!" partisan, disgusting fluff nonsense that has destroyed American politics. I can literally taste the vitriol and bitterness in all of your words. When you're only interested in finding fault, guess what you find? This campaign season made one thing clear: It's way easier to criticize the actions, words, and policies of someone already in the job (not talking about Obama specifically) than it is to actually propose workable, actionable solutions to problems. Why did the Dems murder the Republicans in '08? Because people were pissed. Same thing happened today. Whenever people are pissed, the controlling party is dumped. It's all cyclical, and for those blaming Obama for much of the issues we face today, you're morons. Policies and legislation more than 50 years old, are STILL having very real and tangible effects on our lives today. Government doesn't happen over night, and that makes it nearly impossible to accurately characterize the performance of a president.
