What Camera?

Hey semi-late night NS?

So this year, a friend and I are going to be doing some filming and put togther an edit or something of that nature. And of course to do filming, you need a camera. So this is where you boys come in. We've been searching all over for that perfect camera. Now me, personally, I don't know that much about cameras (in terms of specs and all) and I won't be doing that much filming. So we were both really interested in the 7D. You all know this camera, it was used in Paper Planes, and in NetWork. Of course it's a bit pricey and we were looking for something that has about the same specs and capibility that the 7D has. Now, we're looking for something that is a little cheaper than the 7D, but not so cheap that the quality of the camera is bad. Just hit me up with suggestions, and tell me whats good about the camera and maybe embed a video of test footage (You don't have to, I'll be looking up test footage for every camera mentioned anyway). So please help us out.

Get a t2i. Same sensor as the 7D, but wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper.

Yep. But that's assuming he wants a DSLR. But he'll be hard pressed to find a camcorder style camera with the same quality as the t2i for the price of a t2i

Please fill out the sticky. Plus there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to a dslr camera that you need to understand. also a good 7d setupd runs about $3000-$4000 and a t2i isnt that much cheaper.

What about the 550d? It seems cheaper than all, and I really would only buy a tripod and a dolly and some different lenses.

I don't know, I probably sound like an idiot right now haha

Damnit, that explains alot. Ok, thank you. I will probably go with the 550d/t2i then. Ok, another noob question, how do you get the shots to be more dark and distinguished such as the beginning shot in this - (Sorry embed won't work for some reason) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n45QB5brj9E 

I know this is probably an editing effect, but does anyone know?

Lastly, does anyone recommend any specific lenses?

It's just editing. Honestly, before you drop cash on a t2i make sure you know what you're getting into. Cameras cost a TON (more than you think it's gonna cost), and for a first time DLSR user filming will be a bitch. Just do some more research and think hard about it before you buy.

Felt like posting this..
It's filmed with a 7d but the t2i has the same video quality, the main difference is in the ergonomics of the cameras.

60D. similar to the T2i but it has adjustable audio levels and a swivel LCD. if that's too much, then get the T2i. I have one and I love it

Yeah, I know. I feel like I'm entering the camera world blind - folded. I will do ALOT of research on this camera, because I really think this is a winner. The only thing is the DLSR factor you guys keep mentioning. May I PM you if I have any further questions? I'd rather not post - whore.

Yeah for sure man. The main thing about filming with DLSR's is that you have the option of manually setting a TON of different settings, and you have to focus manually. But with practice it kind of becomes second nature.

it sounds like you arent ready for a DSLR (not that im an expert by any means) considering that you dont even know what it is... i wouldnt drop that much cash on a camera if i didnt know what i was doing. especially cause using a DSLR requires knowing your shit to get a good shot. its not all about the camera, its about how you use it and the editing.

I've definitely used a video camera, and I've probably used what you all are talking about, I'm just confused on names and specs. I mainly made this thread to see what each camera was capable of and what would come with either one.

DLSR's are capable of amazing things but you can't expect to take it out of the box and produce great things with it. Theres gonna be a lot of learning to do.

Yeah, I completely agree. Honestly, I wanted to challenge myself a bit with this camera. I picked out my lenses and all so basically I am set to order the body and everything. Will I need to order cords that hook up to my computer seperately? or will it be included in the box?

You guys will be looking at dropping like $2000 if you want to put together a complete t2i setup. keep that in mind.

Yeah, but we're buying a 400 dollar lense. Just a starter's kit and maybe a dolly. The body is 730$ plus all the shipping. Oh and we'll need the cords for editing and all.

well if you buy the lens and the body, how do you plan to stabilize?

figure another 250 for a tripod and 200 for a glide cam.

the 7D is not water proof, it is water resistant. and everybody always says this, but it's really not a big deal. most video cameras don't boast a dust/water resistant body and it's not an issue. i have a T2i and have never had problems with its body, even when it has been splashed. basically, as long as you don't drop your camera in the water, you'll be fine.

only thing im scared about while filming skiing with mine, is snow that always gets flung up or if its snowing out

don't worry about snow spraying the camera, that won't be a problem as long as you wipe the snow off. as for if its snowing, just be smart about it. i've filmed in a downpour of rain with my HVX and it was completely fine

yea it is a pretty solid camera, that's true. but i still stand by what i've said, I don't think the dust/water resistance is as important as people seem to think it is.

sorry for the confusion, just because it has water Proofing doesnt make it water  proof. I was just trying to state that they have done things to the body to make it more resilient against those elements
