Thinking About Trading in For a Jeep

So I'm moving to Oregon, and I'm driving a Toyota Camry V6, which gets around okay, but obviously isn't the best for getting to the mountain, especially when it's snowing. KBB gives me it being worth about 5,000 give or take, and I've been considering trading in to get a 4x4. I was thinking either a Jeep Wrangler/Cherokee/Grand Cherokee, more towards Cherokee/GC because I'm 6'5 and having a small car is tough on me.


What is everyones feelings on Jeeps? My Toyota is great, never has to be maintained really. I just did the 90,000 mile replacement of timing belt, and I don't want to buy a money pit, something that will always be breaking down.

my dads been driving jeeps like forever, we have a jeep CJ7 and for daily use we had cherokees /gc's for the past 20y :)

i'd say do it! especially the XJ cherokee is a great car, both on and off road !
also my dad is quite tall, around 2m and the jeep cherokee/grand cherokees are the only suvs where he has abundant space to sit :)

Well if you are looking at a new GC depending on what you want it can get really expensive. But of you do happen to have 40 grand on a Cherokee I would just get a Audi q5

jeeps are poorly made, and poorly reviewed cars. especially for the amount of gas they burn.

my Jeep is a 2000 with 190,000 miles and I have never had to do anything on it more than regular maintenance

i have a 99 grand cherokee with 112,000 on it and i havent had any problems with it at all. id say do it once you have a jeep you wont wanna drive anything else and it will be alot better than a camry. jeeps really arent poorly made mine is mostly stock besides the wheels and i romp on my car and it holds up fine, as long as you maintain it right it will last forever

jeeps ride like absolute shit for the most part yea a new 2010 will be fine but they are really built like shit....on top of that they burn gas like a mother fucker and dont even have that much room on the inside pointless car for everday use if you ask me...get a awd car

Nissan XTerra SE. Goes everywhere my friends jeeps do off-roading in the Rockies and pulls them out when they get stuck. ;-) It's like a jeep + reliability and luxury. Definitely gonna be more $$$ than the average Jeep though. Jeeps are sick though. I'd get a 4 door Wrangler Rubicon if I had the spare change.

first of all my jeep Grand Cherokee rides great, I own one I would know. And it is 4 wheel drive.

Jeeps ride like shit, huh? That's why they can tackle the most extreme terrain in the Rocky mountains like fucking beasts. They start killing gas when they are past 200,000 miles but what SUV wouldn't? Two door wranglers don't have a ton of room because they're built for steep angle climbs and are meant to be short. An AWD is a pussy soccer mom fake 4x4 that no one would have any fun with in Oregon. Where do you live, Illinois? Shut up.

we have a 2007 jeep grand cherokee and it drives super smooth...

+in 20y none of our jeeps ever broke down, except for the CJ7 once while wading through a creek water got in the airintake and into the carb....

Dude, I love my Camry. Great car.
If you're looking for a car to get to the hill, look at a Forester or Outback. They will be way better on gas and if all you're doing is light offroading, get the Subaru. Better on gas, better on the road, and just as good, if not better in the snow than the Jeep. It will also be far more reliable and probably safer than a Jeep. There are people out there driving Subarus with 250,000+ miles and they still run great. You won't need a big SUV like a Jeep just to drive on snowy roads. Get a more efficient car.

I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee and I love it to death.

It is pretty bad on mpg's but it will truck through anything. I've been in water up past the hood, 3-4 feet of snow, it's amazing. Get good tires on it though, that makes a huge difference.

You dont know what your talking about.

4WD is basically good only for getting unstuck. You never want to use it above very low speeds, as it makes tires break loose on turns (due to the lack of a center differential). In that sense, it's considerably less safe than AWD or FWD. Once you're moving along, switch to 2WD. If you have to drive through snow and slush, either 4WD at a crawl, or AWD would do. Even with winter tires, 2WD (FWD) will have its limits. It takes more snow, but 4WD or AWD will eventually get stuck too.


I drive an 01 Audi A6 (with AWD) best car I have ever owned in the snow. I live in Bozeman, Montana.

Just not a big fan of your jeeps, or your fake ass mountain man attitude.

No, YOU don't know what you're talking about. With the computer systems in SUV's these days you can drive in 4wd up to 50mph you fuck! Lockers Differentials are so elaborate in 4x4 vehicles now you can turn them on/off manually or have them automatically detect speed/driving conditions. And NO ONE should be driving that fast in bad conditions anyway. I am on every single 4x4 forum for the West Coast and have tackled around 40 of the hardest, gnarliest trails... it's my passion. I have done all types of mods for SUV's. So don't talk to me about my "Fake" mountain man attitude. You drive a CAR, which is extremely different than an SUV! A 4x4 car would be pointless, seeing as a car's handling is completely different in every condition, so horah for your AWD car. And I don't drive a Jeep, I drive an XTerra SE 4x4.

He's moving to OREGON, and where they get snow so high it would go over your hood. Assuming he's going to want to have some fun and do some off-roading as there is a ton in those parts of the country, he'll want an SUV. I don't know about where you live, but in Colorado the roads aren't plowed. Only the Main St's are during Holidays. All my friends who have cars need to carpool. An AWD anything wouldn't last a minute in moderate off-roading.

gas mileage is gonna suck most likely. but you'll get use to it.
i drive a ford explorer sport 2door, which i've decided was fords attempt at a wrangler like vehicle. love my car sooo much. the most enjoyable suv to drive. manual transmission. rear wheel drive, yet no 4w which sucks. it handles soooo agile and all my friends say its a thrill to ride in. its worth getting a jeep. but if you can find one of these for cheap with low mileage i'd take it. gas is about 16/20 yet the back seats fold down and its got a shit ton of room in the back. get a jeep if you desire

Surprised no one has said a Subaru, AWD for sloshing through the snow and awesome gas mileage, If you're not looking to haul a sled around I would get a WRX

I love my wrangler. If you're getting one, get it from before the new model; not only is it ugly, it sucks.

But the Wrangler does not really do as well as you would think in snow. It can skid out on turns, and its really topheavy. You have to be a little bit careful, although that is true whenever in the snow.

haha my dad bought it. its a 2002 with rear wheel only. the good thing is its a manual so i actually have a shit ton of control in the winter. the winter roads around here arnt that bad and i've only ever hit black ice once. weight in the back and i'm fine. alot of people think not having 4wd makes it impossiable to drive in winter yet i've never had a problem

god i've always wanted one. i think they're dope as fuck. ski bum paradise. that or i've always wanted a old f-150/f-250 crew cab, long bed, with one of the tall caps on the back with the hatch door. you could live in the bed of it ski at mount snow or something

Word, thanks everyone. I definitely am leaning towards Cherokee/GC over Wrangler, because I'd like a bit more room in the car.

I don't want an Audi/Subaru really, maybe a Forester, we'll see.

I liked my dads jeep cherokee a lot. No problems in snow or any other adverse weather. Nothing ever went wrong with it either.

if you want your ride to fall apart in 2 years go for the jeep.

why don't you just get a 4Runner? or a Honda/any japanese company counterpart? American cars suck for the most part with a few exceptions.

I drive a Grand Cherokee from '94. All I can say is solid car. You can drive it almost anywhere, heavy snow to just crusin round. In fact I just took it to a pretty fucking gnar offroad course this week and it held up superbly and I had no problems at all, which was crazy to me at least. Haven't had any major problems since I've owned it and if I could chose any other car I don't think I would. If I were you, I'de definatly say go for the Cherokee/GC. Feels comforatble and homey once you're inside as opposed to a Wrangler for long car rides, but still has the muscle to do practically anything you want. You won't have any regrets if you get it for sure.

my 98 cherokee classic has treated me great. 100,270 somethin miles and no problems, plus its gotten me around in every condition. Haven't done anything on it past stock except picked up a pair of Pike Snow tires for the winter and a set of rims to throw them on. AT tires in every season but winter.

They run forever.

Hey i have a 2005 jeep liberty renegade with racks its dope only draw back is the gas milage which is a bit of a downgrade from your toyota but no 4x4 has amazing gas milage so if you want to get a jeep go for it they are solid!!

Get the Jeep.  Make sure you get an older one though, 90s or early 2000s and it'll hold up great, you won't regret it.  All the people that say they fall apart don't know shit.  And in regards to a $5 suspension?  Yes, they're bouncy as all hell.  It's a Jeep, it's not supposed to ride like some luxury car.  The ride is rough but the suspension can take a hell of a lot of abuse.  And who ever said part-time 4wd systems are worse than AWD... I don't even know what to say to you.  Get the jeep you won't regret it.  Message me if you have any questions.
