"I support the troops but not the war?" whaaaa?

I keep seeing bumper stickers that say this, and it pisses me off. I feel like its a contradiction, and people who dont support the war dont support the troops... people like this make it seem like troops are being sent overseas against their will, like they didnt sign up for the military on their own. Its a fact that a large majority of troops are republican. I dont know, i just wanted to see your guys'  take on the matter

they are essentially saying:

we support the troops, but we don't want them fighting a war that we don't deem necessary.

they give their thoughts out to those fighting for our country, but don't agree with the reasoning for them fighting.

Our troops are overseas risking their lives. I support them and respect that they are willing to do that for their country. But I do not support the cause they are fighting for. It really isn't that hard to understand.

how can you not get that? you have any idea of what military service is? you can't just walk away from a war because you don't agree with it. that's why i support the troops. even though that a number of them (whatever that may be) don't believe in the reasons for being overseas, they still do it anyways because they they will not abandon their brothers. that's true heroism. to say most troops are republican is something you just assumed without ANY reason behind it. either way it doesn't mean shit, true or not, so fuck off with that crap.

first off let me say that we beefed up our security regardless of the invasion or not. so let me ask you this, what would have happened if bush never took any action? what if he let some guy kill 3,000 of our citizens on a massive attack in one of the most iconic cities in the world and said, "welp guys, we won't let that happen again!" what if the people found out that bush knew which country was harboring these terrorists (no they weren't all hiding out in caves in the mountains) and just let them go saying, "well guys, it kinda wasn't afghanistan's fault." you might be too young to remember the attacks so this may not even work with you but just try to think sensibly about that for a minute.

I support troops in that I support their not dying, and I oppose war in that I think that senseless violence shouldn't really be our go-to plan.

You really have to remember what the atmosphere in America was following 9/11. Everyone, or just about everyone, was out for blood. There was a tremendous amount of outrage and a huge push for retaliation by a vast majority of citizens. The U.S. doesn't take a hit like that lying down, it's more or less part of our culture.

Whether or not the right moves were taken to retaliate is another argument, and I for one think that we were too hasty and some wrong moves were made. But to believe even for a second that there was any chance that shit wasn't going to go down and we were going to sit around beefing up security is asinine.

diplomacy? with who? who tried with afghanistan giving them the ultimatum of ridding of the taliban or we're coming in hot. guess what happened? they were too scared to deal with it themselves so we fucking did what we had to do. again, you seem to have no clue what it was like following right after that day. god hope that you never do but don't judge past actions based on little information of that time and a lot of interpretation based on what's happening today.

Bush used the post 9/11 atmosphere to help gain support for invading Iraq even though it was not as directly related to the attacks, yes, but it was related in that we believed that he had chemical weapons and shit. Don't get started on the shitstorm about Bush lying about WMDs, because while he didn't have any Saddam was desperately trying to make everyone think he had them so he wouldn't be invaded. During his interrogation he said that he tried to make us believe he had them, and that if he had had them he definitely would have used them against us.

Bush did some clever political maneuvering and away we went. We did fuck up in invading Iraq, but it was such a volatile situation already that something was going to happen eventually and no matter who was involved it was going to get sticky. Unfortunately that was us jumping in the tar pit.

brainwashed? because we wanted to destroy those responsible and related those those responsible for killing thousands of our citizens in possibly the biggest terrorist attack ever? its a lot easier to say the crap you're saying now almost 10 years later after we have the full scope of the consequences of what was done. just stop because your argument is completely invalid and useless. how about you jump into your hot tub time machine, travel back to weeks after 9-11 and convince people that diplomacy will work and that attacking the taliban back is not such a good idea. yeah, that'll go over well.

sounds like you are an idiot

you can support people that are risking their lives for your country because they are doing a good thing. but at the same time you can be against the war, disagree with the reasons for it or just fighting in general

This thread gives me even more reason to get my russian mail order bride and move to some island in the middle of nowhere and have my way with her for 40 years.

Also, somewhat unrelated, my aunt and uncle were living in the american embassy in Zimbabwe during the bombing in Zimbabwe, but we didn't start a full out war there, because it wasn't on american soil. Make what you want of what I said, it just came to mind, like every time someone says the 9/11 bombing, I think of the bombing there. Oh and its real hard to find information on the specific details of the bombing, most websites deleted it or never posted the news article, I don't know why though.

im not in the army so i can go out and conduct senseless acts of violence. i joined because it bugged me when i heard that my brothers,sisters,fathers,mothers were getting blown apart trying to help out other people. I joined to help them get back home. i joined so i could help local nationals who are getting injured and killed. It struck a nerve seeing little kids or hearing rather about them dying for no reason in their own country at their own school. Im gonna help in this war or conflict. whatever you choose to call it. I support every single person that is for or against this war even.
im a combat medic. im with a cavalry scout platoon. I have to babysit my boys. It sucks at times. But when you help your own boys and fix them, stitch them, clean blisters on there feet, maybe only give them tylenol and tell them to drink water even though it wont do anything but they appreciate it more then many of you will ever know. I want to do that for the people of afghanistan too. I solely can motivate a platoon to work harder, fight harder. Knowing that i have that influence motivates me to be better. It makes me want to go out there and fight this fight better and harder, its my job. ill do it because i want to. im not worried about what the govt says we're fighting for. im doing my job for my boys and myself. and i love it.
I leave in 5 and a half weeks for afghanistan. right before there election time. Im going where the taliban just started a decent offensive. cool dude. bring it. im ready. support the troops. support the fight. just know there are skiers, snowboarders, skaters, trolls out there doing a job. you see a soldier chillin in the airport or somewhere just say hey man, thanks.

oh my god and i miss skiing. already excited to get out. but thats not important right now.

random thoughts there.

few reasons why...

1. it was an embassy overseas and not skyscrapers in a populated city

2. zimbabwe bombing first showed us that bin laden REALLY hated us and was now an enemy

3. it was on our soil using passenger airlines. questions rose of how well are we protected in our own country.

essentially 9-11 hit home so much harder with more casualties, which has never happened before. embassy bombings have happened but i doubt on such a large scale as zimbabwe's... its not right but those are reasons why i feel that it was forgotten in history essentially.

oh and i forgot about this but wasn't it mostly locals that were killed in the attacks? if it were the 300 (or so?) people killed were all americans... would have been a much bigger deal.

Yea, it happened outside of the Embassy from what I remember (or maybe a small part was affected?) and it wasn't counted as an attack on the Embassy, but rather an attack just in Zimbabwe, but my aunt and uncle remember it as an attack that almost took their lives, because you don't always stay in the Embassy, you gotta walk or drive sometimes to a store or something, they were literally a few hundred feet away from it at the time, so they weren't injured, but a few minutes or ever seconds earlier or later in the day....

didnt read any of the replies really but whats not to understand? not many people would try to argue that we dont need a military, and for a military to work, well, "[theirs] not to reason why." its their job to follow orders no matter what. its the job of the suits to make good, responsible decisions when to use our troops. so i support the troops, dont support the war.. seems rather simple

and on a more cynical note, you said most soldiers are republicans...good, brainwashed soldiers are good soldiers (mostly kidding)

In reality it wasn't Afghanistan that attacked us, it was a well organized terrorist orginazation. It should have been treated from the begining as a police action, not a war. Anger and hate were too high and clearer heads did not prevail. Now we are in a losing fight, we will never "win" in Afghanistan. No one has ever "won" in Afghanistan.

We can justify our actions by claiming the moral high ground on issues like how they treat their women. But in the end, it is far more likely, that we are the bad guys. The evil super power who invades and destroyes it does not find to be in its own image.

There has been between 13 and 30 thousand civilian casualities.
