Hey NS.....Somethine potentially awful is goin' down right now in the Southern Indian Ocean
For those of you who sail, you may know of Abby Sunderland, the 16 year old doing a solo sail around the world....well, some horrible news has come to light...
She is in BIG TROUBLE.

Sunderland, 16, who has been attempting to sail around the world alone, endured multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds before conditions briefly abated.

However, her parents lost satellite phone contact with her early Thursday morning and an hour later were notified by the coast guard at French-controlled Reunion Islands that both of Sunderland's EPIRB satellite devices on board her vessel Wild Eyes had been activated.

One of the devices is apparently attached to a survival suit and is meant to be used when a person is in the water or a life raft. This means Abby is likely in the ocean somewhere. The vessel whereabouts is not known.

Abby's father said he didn't know if his daughter was in a life raft or aboard the boat, or whether the boat was upside down.

THIS WAS HER LAST BLOG POST LAST NIGHHT

The wind is beginning to pick up. It is back up to 20 knots and I am expecting that by midnight tonight I could have 35-50 knots with gusts to 60 so I am off to sleep before it really picks up.

I think I have amended my position.

What if life with out risks? She is obviously well off, she could have just taken the easy route and become another sorority air head or rich bitch. She is doing something that no one her age has ever done before... Well except her brother who actually accomplished sailing around the world.

I know that when I was 16 there is now way I could have done this so bravo.

I was super relieved to hear it. The nearest ship to her location is 30 hours away though.

i wouldn't really say she's being all that selfish. her dream wasn't fulfilled because mechanical failures forced her to stop but she chose to continue, If anything she shows perseverance, courage, and determination. this was long before she experienced this storm, and she has been located and is confirmed ok, i would not at all say this was selfish or unnecessary. You're telling me that Shance, CR, Backstrom, and other skiers who have been killed were being selfish? not at all. get the fuck outta here.

that's exactly what he was saying, but it's not like the Abby has anyone relying on her, so she isn't as selfish as say a husband/father

You ever think about surfacing whales?! She didn't. I guess there is only the danger for whoever has to pick her up and it was probably well organized, not as bad a windsurfers who call in the coast guard for a free ride in. There is also her future children but I guess they don't count. I could also say that even though she had her parents support she may not have much regard for them pending what could have happened. Just because a little girl is excited to see her daddy do something death defying doesn't mean the act of doing it isn't disregarding her.

If anything it just goes to show what little danger is involved in sailing around the world solo if you're rich enough.

do you have a brain? have you seen or read any of the news reports? it's not like Abby had no clue what she was doing or what she was getting herself into. Clearly her family is full of exceptional sailors, considering her brother circumnavigated the world. I'm sure she's been sailing since she could walk. She had the full support of her family and a whole lot of the sailing community. Her parents knew what she was getting into, her brother knew what she was getting into, she knew what she was getting into, so i dont see how she's disgregarding anyone. and what does it have to do with wealth? are you saying that she has no skill or that its not dangerous at all?

i have spent 2 weeks constant on the ocean. more than 100 miles from shore. seeing swells that span two foot ballfields from crest to crest with troughs as deep as 25 feet is as humbling as it is beautiful.

i'm not a religious person, but i do believe in something after this, and on the ocean i feel its as close as you can get without being dead.

it can be as smooth as glass or it can kick your ass. but its the sky that you live for.

for the girl and what she went through, it must have been the most terrifying and awe inspiring thing she has ever experienced. and its probably something that will change her perspective for the better, forever.

I put 'deserved' in quotes. Yea its sad they they're dead but its not a tragedy. A tragedy is a car full of students getting killed by a drunk driver or a kid being kidnapped and murdered. When a guy leaves his wife at home to raise their daughter while he tries to ski and parachute off mountains and dies, its sad and theres pain and suffering involved, but its not tragic.

Im not going back to reread but Im pretty sure I wouldnt have said, 'who cares if a dumb blonde dies' said who cares if this particular person is alive or dead. And the fact is you really really don't. You will pretend you do bc you're a great guy but you don't. Just like you don't care about any of the other 16 year old, blonde girls, who's name starts with 'A', and have one brother, died yesterday . The reason I mentioned her being blonde was bc I think thats a big reason why she's in the media so much, and that the fact that shes in the media so much influences you into thinking you care (shes in the media way more than that 13 boy who climbed everest which is a much more impressive feat)
