After reading a thread in NSG, I'm shocked about people rationalizing that its OK for tobacco to be a part of newschool skiing.

This hopefully will let people step up to the plate, and maybe someone will see this who matters. It was quoted in the other thread that newschoolers.com pretty much invented this sport, so the site has say in it.

Tobacco has nothing to do with skiing. Their money will not help the sport. Anyone who takes thier money should rethink what they are doing.

THIS is taken from GT (general tobacco) 's website:

Older folks usually don't look up to athletes the way young kids do. By sponsoring someone who young kids look up to a (newschool skier), and putting adds in a magazine, which is based around newschool skiing, which IS a sport of [B]ABUNDANT POPULATION OF YOUTH, GT is DIRECTING THEIR MARKETING STRATEGIES TOWARDS YOUTH and thus ARE NOT FULLY COMPLIANT WITH THE MASTER SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT[/B]

no, just no. why do you or anyone else give a fuck? does it affect you? no, it doesnt. if someone wants to smoke/chew its there issue, not yours, and if freeskier needs to sell ad space then they sell to the company with the highest offer. Snus puts money into our sport, so i dont see a single problem with it. would any of you bitch about say a victoria secret ad in freeskier? how about you all start bitching about the monster ads, sense that drink and all energy drinks are awful for you. very few things in this world are good for you, get use to it. if you have a real problem with a little ad in a crappy magazine, grab one of the other ski mags(powder/sbs/skiing). most people have been raised being told that tabacco is bad for you, so if someone wants to use it any way, that is there problem and they deserve to get cancer.

Whatever. Tobacco makes a disgraceful mess of people. Most consumers don't realise the full of extent of the damage it does to the heart, lungs, liver, stomach, genitals, not to mention the damage poisoned blood does to the entire boy.

But smokers have to make the decision for themselves. I'll never in a million years smoke, and I'd love nothing more than to see tobacco consumption reduce to nothing, but smokers have to make that choice for themselves.

Fuck that. Your a bitch. Just cause some pro skier uses snus doesn't mean kids are gunna use it. Tobacco is a choice. Just like having sex. Just because a kid sees Simon dumount fuck a midget stripper and blow coke out of it's belly button does that mean they are gunna do that? Why don't you go bitch about something worth while. Beer was advertised in skiing for years and still is but just cause it is does that mean every skiier goes out a buys a beer just cause they saw it on a sign? No.

And another thing you thing it's wrong for tobacco to be advertised but what about pot? You don't think it's advertised? Well Bad news. Most kids look up to 4bi9 on this site but it's 40's blunts ice and 9's (no hate on 4bi9 at all) but does that mean all these kids go smoke blunts just cause it's in 4bi9?

i hope someone bumps this thread in 4 years and you can all look back on how retarded you are. aside from that is people who dont see any kind of positivity coming from tobacco money in skiing.

is the tobacco money gonna make your lift tickets cheaper? your gear? is it going to make anything cheaper in the sport? no its not. it has no place here. all they are doing is buying add space somehow legally where kids look and helped skiing ruin its name.

p.s. i have general tobacco stickers and helmets for sale, they arent even released yet. pm me to reserve one.

thats a shitty point to be perfectly honest. as i said in the thread in NSG, freeskier's largest reader demographic is older then 18, so they can run all the tabacco ads they damn well please. when you were younger then 18(assuming you are older then now) you never went to the doctor or dentist or something and picked up a car magazine? ever look at the last oh, 6 pages of one? cigar/liquor/sex ads taking up whole pages. There are magazines targeted at kids, then there are normal magazines that the majority of the readers are older then 18 so they have to include ads targeted to that age group, wich includes tabacco/liquor/sex. If all you people that are so anal about this want them gone, then how about you all spend your money and buy the ad space from tabacco and run a big *keep skiing tabacco free* ad

I was agreeing with you Smuggs until I read mrstskier's post, because like he said, energy drinks basically have nothing to do with skiing and they are bad for you too. I don't have any hate towards Pete O either, if he wants to chew then he can, but I don't think he is telling kids to do it if they don't already, he is just sponsored by them.

That's not really true. The whole purpose of advertising is to get people to use their product. In 2008, around >$400 billion was spent on advertising: no one is going to spend that much for no reason at all. Don't forget, kids look up to pro skiers. Which is why kids want the skis Tom Wallisch rides, or the googles Bobby Brown uses etc. And pros endorsing an item like snus will have exactly the same effect.


If you want to smoke, that's fine. It's your life, live it as you wish. But don't encourage children, which the majority of the members of this site are, to indulge in an activity which could potentially kill them.

like mrtskier said, there are tobacco ads in TONS of magazines that kids read, and to be completely honest, do they do anything? is some little 15 year old kid gonna pick up a freeskier and see an ad for cigs and be like "oh, ok! i guess cigarettes are safe now!". if you have a set stance against tobacco (which it seems like a lot of nsers do), a picture of tobacco isnt gonna change your mind.

Maybe not, but kids are impressionable, and when you have pro athletes being branded with these products not so subliminally than its crosses that line. I don't think people just decide randomally to shove a wad of tobacco in their mouths...

again mrstskier compared apples to oranges. and energy drinks started because of extreme sports. where you need extreme energy. MOUNTAIN DEW started it all.

Plus sugar is not illegal to sell to anyone. another reason its apples to oranges.

and pete-o isnt telling anyone to chew, i didnt gather that information. he is sponsored by a big tobacco company. usually you push for support of your sponsors, no matter what the cost. even if its trillions of dollars in healthcare world wide that tobacco is 100 percent liable for, for producing a product you literally cant quit with out lots of help.

but they pay pete o so now i support them becaseu they put money into the sport.

Tobacco advertising is banned or incredibly tightly regulated and constrained in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Canada, and even in the US there is restrictions, so advertising is clearly a problem.

So the answer to your question is yes. An impressionable 15 year old child will become desensitised to the problems of smoking, and will find it much more acceptable if they are bombarded with adverts.

so its ok for athletes to endorse energy drinks? those are bad for you too, and instead of just having the name on their list of sponsors like tobacco is doing now, they drink it on camera, pour it on jumps and girls, and put stickers and shit all over their body. id much rather be shown some guy dipping where kids know the risks already and can make an informed decision than an energy drink where most of the people who drink them dont know the risks of it and try to replace their water intake with monster.

and that goes the same for everything else. should we be allowed to advertise bindings? if you crank your din too tight you could tear your acl. and what about skis with those sharp edges? that could be used as a weapon or something. i know thats a little exaggerated, but my point is everything has its inherent risks, and just because something is dangerous to you doesnt mean that we should sweep it under the rug and refuse to talk about it. a picture of snus or some washed up pro throwing general snus on their roster of sponsers (sorry pete) isnt gonna make every little punk on ns rush out and start chain smoking

i really think were making wayyy too big a deal about this all. were treating this like if a kid sees a picture of tobacco they wont know what to do with themselves. if you really have a problem with tobacco, you should be concerning yourself with bigger problems than a snus ad in freeskier.

well lets see, have you ever heard of women's rights groups? many of them protest ads that promote sex and the view of women as "objects", because they find it offensive. some of you find tabacco ads offensive. As a guy i'm sure you dont see a problem with VS, as do I, but I know quite a few people who despise any ad that has a girl half naked in it. if you feel offended by an ad or product, you will dislike it. Do I feel offended by tabacco? hell no, it doesn't directly affect my well being because i'm smart enough to not smoke it. Hell my aunt just died last week of lung cancer due to smoking a pack a day. I feel bad that she died, but i dont blame tabacco, it was her choice to smoke, just like it is everyone's choice and right as a human being to smoke and do what they wish to do to their body.

i think i agree. does general only make snus? cause snus is a lot better than regular chew. but still i dont think skiers should be giving tobacco companies the loophole to advertise to kids. and this is coming from someone who snuses, and smokes a ciggie every now and then.

i love all these people saying, oh, just because a pro athlete uses it, doesnt mean other people will want to. what the fuck do you think sponsorship is for? you think companies spend millions every year on something that doesnt help their sales? how many "what pants was tanner wearing?" threads have you seen? pro skiing, and NS, are all about this kind of shit.

yeah yeah, great, you could make the same argument for energy drinks, theyre bad for you etc, but this is tobacco. it's been made a law, for very good reason, that you cannot advertise it to kids and furnishing a tobacco company with a way to do so isnt cool. sorry, thats my take on the matter. im sure peter o wasnt thinking about it like this when he was offered the deal (i gotta admit i'd be psyched if they wanted to sponsor me) but he's gotta think about the kids

Hoenstly, grow the fuck up. I understand it's unhealthy, but so is skiing.

Why don't you let people make decisions for themselves. If the sponsors bring money to our sport, then I'm for it. You all sound like some middle aged moms whining to the home owners association about your neighbors yard not being mowed.

Anyone heard of Bill Hicks? Comedian from the early 90s. Half of his material was about smoking.The other half was brilliant anti establishment humor. He joked about how in a few years he would come up on stage talking from his throat. He called non-smokers pompus fucks. He openly chain smoked on stage. Well 2 years after he started stand up he died from cancer that rapidly was spreading through his body, and with that his message died too.

but why make that like at tobacco? there are plenty of things that skiers endorse that are really unhealthy that we just let slide because its fun. what about chug life? theres shots of peter olenick downing half a bottle of malibu rum in like 10 seconds. no problem? theres all kinds of stupid drunk ideas that show up that kids just glance over. and i hate to be the one to bring this up, but like 99% of ns smokes weed. i know weed and tobacco arent nearly on the same level, but weed isnt exactly good for you. i just dont understand why we let these bad behaviors that directly affect your health slide but as soon as tobacco is MENTIONED we flip out and make a fucking petition. if you watch the video in question, they show snus with a logo in the beginning, then its an interview, and they show snus again. he doesnt even talk about it and were all pissing our pants about how half of ns is gonna be hooked.

You're entire argument is based on the premise that children aren't impressionable. That's false and you know it, or are you really that naive? Even if Freeskiers demographic is mainly over 18, I would bet that at least a third is under, and that's more than enough young readers to make it unethical.
