Bi-Polar

So today a good friend of mine was diagnosed with being Bi-Polar. They are going through a really rough time right now and I want to do something. My friend is a girl and I'm not that great around women and feelings (no homo), and I don't know what to do. I don't see her that much, so do you think I should try and hang out with her, go somewhere, etc?

careful man. shes probably having a tough time dealing with her diagnosis..how would you feel if you had a mental health issue and people went around announcing it. i say be nice, and sensitive, but dont act to suck-upish because just because shes bi polar doesnt mean shes stupid. she'll catch on if your giving her crap.

Oh I know, I just found out today and haven't talked to her yet. If I had a mental health issue I would be pissed if people went around announcing it. I'm terrible at sucking up, so that is a no. So pretty much just hang out, try and act relatively normal, don't say dumb shit? And thanks :).

yup i think you have the right idea. she just wants to be treated normally, and im sure any weird behaviour would just set her off. yeah hang out, joke around and treat her normally. i say still watch what you say, like dont say anything you might find a little offensive but there ye go. youre good :)

he probably doesn't. Hell, I don't. But cheesy little jokes kind make me giggle. This is NS, most people are somewhat sensitive, but a little joke isn't bad. Granted you are Bi-Polar, so I see where you're coming from.

I do actually. Not as much as you but I have a couple friends you have it. The one pretty bad. I thought my advice was decent, not expert shit, but legit enough.

bipolar disorder affects like 2.5% of americans. its not some serious, terminal illness. just because she was JUST diagnosed with it doesnt mean she hasnt been living with this for a longgg time...

i cant imagine she is too shaken up by the news, all it does is offer an explanation to her probable erratic behavior. your blowing this way out of proportion. and i still dont understand why you would treat her any differently then you would have before...? like i said, its not like she just developed this condition out of the blue...

I'm not blowing it out of proportion. She is just having a shitty time with family, this, and other things. I came on here trying to get some good answers, and I did. I was planning on not treating her any different than before, I just wanted to see if there was anything I shouldn't bring up, say, do etc.

i mean, if someone was talking to me and was like "so i hear you have adhd, that must be rough" or just brought it up in any way at all, id just be all "fuck off"

its not that its a sensitive subject, its just it shows people are "gossiping" and talking about my personal struggles behind my back, which is just lame. if i want to talk about it, i will bring it up. assume she is the same, and pretend she is the exact same as before. oh wait....

Being Bi-polar is a bit more serious then some people are saying. My dad must have had a bad case or something, but thanks to his disease he is a terrible person. he manipulated my mom into staying with him to raise his kids and once he got rich of his company he took on a trip to seattle, got in a panic attack about his life, and said he wanted a divorce.to this day my dad is on medication and can still be suicidal. he also is fucking wired, if you talk back to him he gets physically violent, he also gets violent if you disagree with him.

yeah it can be pretty hard. i'm sorry about your dad dude that sounds rough.


the hardest part is being judged for being bipolar. like people are scared of you. or don't want to have anything to do with you. or just think you're a crazy bitch. it's so difficult to just be seen as a normal person, and it hurts when you're not. so don't treat her any differently dude. and if she wants to talk, be open to listen.

but yeah just be supportive and dont press the issue. also don't let her control you or make you feel bad because of her mental illness ( i donno what your relationship is but i've been in that position)

i mean yeah being bi polar can be difficult but its not the end of the world, and she doesnt deserve to have you put your own life aside to meet her needs when shes manic or depressed.

imo medicine is the worst thing in the world for someone who is already unstable. it just makes everything worse ive never seen a case where medicine actually worked to make someones life easier. it either makes everything worse or solves one problem only to create another. fuck meds. sorry about your situation though.

Well before my dad started taking he was incredibly manipulative and slept 3 hours every two nights. so with lack sleep he would be even more irratated, he only recently got on meds but its already making a huge difference espeacially the sleep thing, so i personally encourage people taking meds

Aahhhh, now I understand where the anger came from. I thought El.Gato was overreacting at a little joke like a mofo. I never really knew how serious being bi-polar is before this thread. I do remember El.Gato posting in a thread about weed, or shrooms, or acid or something about how one of those drugs triggered a psychotic episode.
Psychological problems aren't something to fuck around with. I'm so thankful that I don't have any disorders (knock on wood)
My aunt was schizophrenic, but she died when I was in 7th grade (cancer, not related to her schizophrenia) so I didn't really understand that she had any problems until recently when the topic came up. I remembered instances where she told me things that she thought to be true. She thought her dog was a manifestation of God because dog is god backwards. My mom told me that she knew that she lived in a separate reality, but that reality was so much better than the one she lived in that she stayed there as much as she could.
For example, in her reality she was beautiful, and her and Ricky Martin were lovers. When she was really sick, she thought her mom was a witch who was making her sick.

I think another one of my relatives, my dad's cousin I think, someone pretty distant, is manic depressive.



Well, that was a crazy fuckin tangent. I'm going to sleep now.
