Subaru/AWD cars question.

So it looks like im finally going to get rid of my 98 safari van, and plan on getting a subaru(imprezza 2.5ts wagon, or 2.5rs coupe/sedan, 2002-2003)

are there any other comparable cars on the market?(AWD) im not a huge car buff so i cant think of any off the top of my head. the only thing i could think of was the evolution series by Mitsubishi, but i have heard many problems with getting parts, maintenance, etc, not to mention they all seem to run a lot more expensive. The lancer(same category as the imprezza 2.5?) is a front wheel drive car, no?

also, i need some advice as far as the amount of kms on a car...would it be better to buy a subaru with higher (like 300kms) kms on it, and just do an engine/tranny swap, then buying something with say 150kms on it and driving it till something breaks? My brother tells me engine and tranny swap would run be about 700 a piece, and installation would be slim to no cost for me.

thoughts/opinions on the best route? thanks pros!

again, wayyyyy too expensive in parts maintenance and insurance. i dont think you guys get the point lol.

again, your not gonna spend shit on an e30. they are cheap as hell to maintain, and if you ever do have a problem, which you probably wont, parts are cheap.

ok didn't see the post where you counted out BMW's. I agree that most BMW's are a pain in the ass but I just thought that if you want a reliable AWD car you should consider BMW E30 325ix's and what the snow guy is telling you is true about later madel BMW's but not for E30's so what he was saying is not valid and he did it twice. No where in my post did I knock subaru's there a nice car and I know enough about them to know that. He just made an uneducated complaint.

It's not uneducated. You'd be buying a 30 year old car. It will have more problems than a 10 year old car. Yes, it's easier to work on but in a few years parts will become harder to find and the price will go up. It's just not a good idea to buy it if you plan on keeping it for a while. Not to mention rust (which is a given in snowbelts) and heavier wear if he lives somewhere that sands and salts. My subaru looks great after 13 years. Maybe my mom got a bad apple but her BMW looks like complete shit after just a couple winters up here (previously from down south).

I never said you were knocking subarus, all I'm saying is price paid now and price paid later are 2 completely different things and the subaru will almost always be cheaper in the long run. And I think we've both made our points so let's get back to the thread topic.

you still dont know e30's and it would be about a 20 year old car, not 30.  they are extremely overbuilt, not like today's cars.  if i wanted pure toughness and reliability, id pick a rusted 70's car with a good condition motor and transmission over a 10 year old car knowing that they were built like tanks.  and newer cars have soooo many stupid fragile little things that can go wrong.


and if you dont want a rusted one, thats easy, find one with little or no rust.  for 5 grand you could easily find one, no problem.  honestly, you could find one with 120,000 miles, and know that it will last you up to or over 300,000 miles just on regular maintence, and im pretty sure bmw still manufactures pars for their older cars, i think they are one of the only companies out there that does it as much as they do.

a3's a retarted car is so small could no way fit skis and a bunch of people on teh inside...get a wrx for the same money and way faster.

you've never worked one one. by far the worst manufacture for giving you no room to do things. so if you don't do the work yourself labor rates get out of hand. On the other hand bmw's are very nice to work on, and in the case of the E30, tough as nails, cheap parts, and built incredibly well. I know people with mid 80's ones and all the panels and interior pieces line up perfectly.
