JOSS may suck this year filming wise compared to last year

I have to say I was more stoked on the filmers last year...

Norway lost both Jon Håtveit and Filip Christensen, so now the job is left to Andreas Johanessen (http://vimeo.com/10687735) and Kristoffer Fahlgren (whom I have no idea who is).. Not that they are bad filmers, there's just no way they can match Filla and Jon. They're just not at that JOSS level yet.

Also the filmers for Team America seem a bit odd. Josh Knox I suspect is something Jon set up. Not that he isn't good, we´ve all seen that epic skate edit he made with his brother for example, it's just a tiny bit wierd. Then there's AJ Dakoulas, (and I know I'm going to get torched for this) who isn't THAT good. Not saying he hasn't got talent, but he really is no match for Josh Berman or Tyler Hamlet.

That came off a bit wrong. Why do you raise a "point" like this before you've seen the end results? It's just badmouthing (although you did say good things as well) these filmers for no apparent reason. Would you like to be in their position and hear this about your own work?

I was simply pointing out the fact that the level of filming for these two specific teams probably will take a step down compared to last year, which is sad.

I agree - it's nice to have a contest where the lesser known filmers can film top athletes without having to compete with guys like Berman, Filip, or Johnny D.

There is no doubt in my mind that JOSS will put out the most banger edits we will see all year. All the filmers there are top notch and deserve it

What you mean, is they aren't the biggest names filming. Give them the opportunity to perform on a world class stage and then analyze what you liked/disliked.

The edits will be sick but the elements and ski porn will get repetitive. I hope someone or numerous people do something different with there video.

Josh is a sick filmer, end of discussion! He's really creative and I love the videoblogupdates he has made for Jon.

And btw, Filip Christensen was Norways photgrapher last year, not filmer (allthough I do think he helped out with the filming).

1) josh is gonna make a sick edit for america
2)Clarke is gonna use his magical 7D and do work for canada
3)as LOLO stated, norway will blow ur mind & sweden will kill it with fabian and lederer
4) newschoolers will do well if its not all follows (jk), and i don't know about down under, but they will suprise

CONCLUSION: sure we all have a lot of info about what's going on every minute at JOSS, and sure we can jump to conclusion by looking at things these filmers have made, but i know that 2 weeks with the best athletes and backdrops, everyone will step it up and produce some sick shit. all these filmers are smart enough to make more than just a "ski porn" edit. stop the hate.

In my opinion the underdogs edit's tend to be the best. Look at how sick Henrik's edit was from 2 years ago when Napier from 4bi9 edited it. Their style is always fresh. Rather than another edit to a "party and bullshit" remix.
Sure some of the big names are out of the competition but this could make things better, they already made it in the industry, think about how hard people like Kevin and Duncan are going to work to make sure their edits stick out.

because as was pointed out on the ski show, its just not worth it for the big name filmers to go


its not like you can use the footage in your movie for the year, everyones already seen it. so basically you are spending time and money filming something that you wont be selling.

berman and the other big names probably see it that way, and see its more worthwhile to be getting last minute bc shots than shooting JOSS

the only people who know what they're talking about in this thread are beating around the bush with the answers. I will continue that trend because it's not worth my while to fully elaborate.

So your super pro filmers aka field/level1/pbp have no incentive to go to Joss partly because of their movies and partly because JOSS doesn't offer them any incentives either.

I will not express my opinion towards joss filming any farther. Most of my problems driven by the foundation of Joss itself. A lot of kids will get pissy at me because they don't have industry insight and will just be their ignorant selves.

I'm stoked on some of the kids who got this opportunity to go though. There is a lot more to gain for this years filmers their predecessors.

filmers didnt get a free ride this year like i suspect they did in previous years..they had to pay for a lot of the trip..so alot of filmers did not want to spend the $$!

A flaw with the ski industry is that these types of events are generally only accessible to big names. Jon is just pushing the industry further by giving the little guys a chance, because it is very likely that there are filmers out there who are just as good as the top names, if not better. This isn't a red carpet, it's a ski event. Who cares about names?

Maybe there just aren't enough sick filmers from each country, but that would be sick if the filmers were from each respective team. I just noticed that last year when Johnny D was filming with Sweden, and I thought that was kind of weird. Seems similar this year.

I don't have any doubts about the quality though.
