Moving to Colorado

 Me and my college roommate go to school in Boston MA and we are moving to colorado after graduation to just live work and ski in colorado year round. What type of ski's and equipment are the best for both backcountry and park.  I ski mostly park but im all about backcountry when the conditions are right. Help me out and let me know what we should get before movin out.

Not to be a dick, but if you don't know what equipment you need for the backcountry (and by backcountry you mean out of bounds, not just leaving the groomers for glades and what not) you shouldn't being skiing the backcountry.

Thats awesome you are moving out here though.

as far as skis, bring a pair of park skis and something for the pow (perferably rockered and atleast 95mm underfoot.)

anyways colorado is sweet just dont be a jackass

this kid just wants to ski pow cause hes from the EC. hes prob not gonna go do any passes or anything. resorts are fine anyway. didnt seem like he was asking for what beacons to buy and shit
depending on where you go in CO i would just buy two sets of skis. you will thank yourself later.

if you DO plan on going out of bounds, i would recomend taking an avy 1 course. i took one in january, well worth it. and like the others says, proper backcountry gear. maybe add an avalung to the list. like others have also said, something 95mm+ in the waist for some pow skis, rocker is nice, but not always needed.   park skis, just bring what you already have. you can always get a new pair out here.

ya, it can't be said enough, so i'll say it again
If you plan on doing real, out of bounds backcountry skiing, don't go out unless you know what you are doing.
Get educated, there a lots of great classes, avi 1 is a good place to start.
Colorado has the most avalanche deaths on average of any state, so it isn't somethin to take lightly.

But colorado is an awesome place for sure

Thanks for replying, I know my shit about skiing EC backcountry but straight up the skiing between EC and WC is so different. I've skied since I was 2 and never traveled farther then NY to do it. I was just trying to get a feel on how I should go about equipment from locals and stuff.  No one out east that skis backcountry has tips wider than 88mm. Thanks for your concern haha but I'll def take a safety course and that link to the colorado avalanche site is clutch.

You seem out of the loop in more ways than one.  I would be uncomfortable sending you out into Colorado backcountry.  It's not the same as the east at all (not even close), and your lack of any correct knowledge of gear shows that you don't know what you're doing.

No offense intended, but judging by your apparent lack of awareness around basic terminology and equipment, I'd say that you have some serious homework to do. My advice? Hook up with some friendly CO locals ASAP and be humble and soak up all the info/knowledge that you can before you rush out into the BC....or the slack country for that matter.

For all I know, you're an incredibly gifted skier, but remember, when you start venturing beyond resort boundaries (and sometimes even in-bounds), you need to rely on your knowledge/safety protocol as much as your skiing ability.

You say you want to ski backcountry but do you have a sled? if not don't even waste your time hiking around like some wannabe snowshoer. Bring what you have, the skinnier your skis the deeper you'll get. It usually doesn't dump more than a foot at a time here, if you plan on living in summit pray for 8". You're probably gonna end up with a crap job barely able to make ends meet, blowing money on new expensive equipment is the last thing you should do. After a season, or even half a season you'll be able to reassess your situation and see what your needs are, probably needing to move home.

Go and do an avy course. As well as learning a lot you'll probably meet some people who can give you some advice or go skiing with. I did mine in CO and really enjoyed the days I had up on the Vail Pass for the course.

A pair of park skis and a pair of powder ski are what you'll want. Choosing park skis is pretty straightforward but powder ski is less so.

Fully reverse cambered ski are undoubtedly awesome in pow and crud. I have Kuros which are amazing in soft snow. The problem is they're not fun the moment the snow gets hard. This is fine if you're skiing true back country but if you're skiing in a resort or slack country then I'd go with a ski that has regular camber under foot but is rockered in the tip (and maybe tail too). I've also got S7s and although not as good as the Kuros in the deeps stuff they are a better resort/ slack country ski and just more versatile IMO. I'm sure other manufacturers make good reverse camber/rockered skis too but the S7s and the Kuros are the ones I own so the only ones I've talked about

Find some friends in CO that know what they're doing and go ski with them. You can have tons of previous knowledge and have all the right equipment but if you aren't familiar with the terrain then you're screwed.

so im going to avoid ridiculing you, seeeing as the people above me already did a decent job, and just tell you to get some rossi s7s. If you are trying to get a good pow ski that is also versatile that is your best bet, and i personally find that it skis amazing. Also look at k2 obsetheds, salomon czars, etc.

not trying to scare anyone, or discourage going into the backcountry here in co (or anywhere) just be smart about it. a stat from one of bruce tempers avy books. If you cross 100 avalanche paths a season (approx. 20ish days in the bc) and you are correct about the path being safe 99% of the time and on average 1 outta 10 avalanches will kill you, you live for 10 years. Colorado has amazing backcountry, but also a the dangerous snow pack in the u.s. so be smart, take atleast an avy 1 class
