CARRABASSETT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - After a night in the snow and cold, Sugarloaf ski patrollers expect to rescue four skiers lost on a mountain today.
Sugarloaf tells NEWS CENTER that four people - three skiers together and a single - skied past the boundaries of a snowfield and got lost.
They got in touch with family members that they were lost and the family then called search and rescue.
Ski patrol went out at 6:00 PM to look for the skiers and made contact over cell phone... but the snow and wind forced a suspension of the overnight rescue efforts.
Ski patrol told the skiers to hunker down for the night.
At 5:00 AM, ski patrollers went back out on the mountain.  We're told they have regained voice contact via cell phone and should have the skiers rescued presently.



-So these morons basically ski out of bounds, and somehow "don't" see the out of bounds signs.
-They think everything's okay since they had a cell phone which is going to make people believe that cell phones are all they need to do stupid shit like that.
-Waste lots of money and hours.

Come on, how can they not see out of bounds signs.

I feel for the patroller who had to go out at 5 AM.

first off, plenty of people see the out of bounds signs and either ignore them, or go past them (places that have open gates, it is completely okay to go o.b. as long as you have the proper gear and know what you are doing).

second, nowhere in that article did it say that they only had cell phones. i believe that cell phones are an essential when venturing into the backco.. i always have mine with me.

I think the most ridiculous part of it all would be that the patrollers postponed the rescue because of bad weather?!?! what the fuck? what if all of those people died overnight... how the fuck would the explain that?

The news later reported that they had few supplies.

Remember, this is Maine not Utah. I will admit that they postponed due to bad weather for a dumb reason, but seriously what the hell are they doing. Clearly if they get lost like this, then they shouldn't have ventured off.

Haha i got "lost" out of bounds at Wildcat for over 4 hours on sat. it was more of "this sucks and is going to take a long time to get out of" then lost though, i found my way out without ski-patrol. But bad weather is a lame excuse

clearly you've never been back there. They didn't have any idea where they were and were blindly following tracks and eventually realized they couldn't get back over to sugarloaf area. They hadn't had experience in the area and were lucky only a few people stayed the night since multiple track following joeys had to be shoed back to the mountain since they had absolutely no idea where they were

I have been in the snowfields, not where they got lost. I can understand how they got lost, I was at Saddleback that day and their snowfields are similar, but not even marked about leaving the ski area. If they haven't had experience why aren't they with someone with experience. I watched the news and saw these snowboard bafoons laughing and waving at the cameras as they excitedly got carried down on snowmobiles. I mean, they had to be instructed on how to build a cave for the night. Okay, great they don't know how to ski snowfields, glades, or backcountry, why are they out there? WHY?

I know them personally because i was face palming the night away the evening before they got lost when they were getting Jersey Shore style in stratton. They weren't lost in the snowfields and no saddleback and sugarloaf have nothing in common glade/backside wise. They got lost because they are ignorant fucks who wanted to get Xtreme.

I believe the idea of postponing the rescue is to risk the lives of the people who fucked up instead of the rescuers, which I think is legit.

And since they actually talked to the people they probably knew that no one was seriously injured or in immediate danger.

And that is why I always bring my cell phone to the bc.

Yep I totally agree, one of the inherent risks of going into the backcountry is an immediate rescue may not be available. If you want to get baby sat by patrol, stay on the resort. Maybe spending the night in the backcountry will teach these guys (and other idiots) to have some respect for the mountains and have a plan for where you plan to go.

the same sort of thing happened at my mountain. just not as bad and not out of bounds. a snowboarder got stuck in 4 foot powder in the woods and called ski patrol with his cell phone. i don't know if he was hurt or just plain stuck.

I talked to one of the kids at dinner tonight, and from what I gather, they did not intentionally go to the 'backside.' They were skiing in the snowfields and did not watch where they were skiing and ended up in an unfamiliar area.

haha i was one of them, but the article is wrong, we got out at 6:00 PM and two others stayed in the woods over night. Those kids were stupid, cuz they left their skis in the woods.

I'd call that strengthening the gene pool.  Sorry, but if you ignore closures, you are assuming the risk.  If patrol felt the risk was too great to continue the search, that was their call.  What about patrol and their families?  What if some of them died rescuing these dumb fucks?  I agree completely with OP.  Remembering to bring your cell doesn't entitle you leave your brain at home.

Fitting timing...

I think one thing that may be happening is the unprepared, inexperienced and unfamiliar visitors are following tracks into the woods out past boundaries. Those tracks have been laid by people who are familiar with the terrain and area and know where they are going. These other people are lured in by the trees and the fresh snow that keeps descending beyond and keep descending when they should've cut over and traversed back to the resort already. Next thing you know, they are miles from the resort in the middle of the woods in the dark. I know of two areas in particular at my home mountains where you can dip out of bounds and be rewarded with some incredible snow and there are specific spots to catch a traverse back to get in bounds. If you miss the traverse, you have a long slog out as the terrain quickly drops away along the opposite ridge.

As for the rescues... It's a slippery slope. At the present, we've chosen to take the moral highground and perform SAR's for free to try to avoid people from not seeking help when they are in trouble and having worse outcomes as a result (IE- Recovery as opposed to Rescue). Additionally, where do we draw the line at someone in trouble? Is a skier who goes into the sidecountry with knowledge who injures themselves and needs assistance getting out any different than the ill-prepared skier getting lost in the sidecountry? Should both be required to foot the bill for their rescues?

I agree that people going out-of-bounds without the knowledge and preparedness is a huge problem. What I am struggling with, is what is the best way to combat this.

Yeah for sure. I'm an east coast skier and last week was at Steamboat and some lady offered to take us into the Backcountry so we did. If we didn't have anyone experienced to show us where to go we could of easily gotten cliffed out or lost.

It also could have been a group of friends that were going fast and missed th sign because of all the snow in the face. and whgen they felt the run was way to long they figuered they didnt know where they where.
It could happen to every1. The weaker people in this story are the ski patroll. It is their job. They get paid for it. Normal people wake wake up at 6:30 to go to a fucking desk and sit behind there computer. So dont feel bad for people who ski and rescue lives all day and get paid pretty good

I'm sorry, but ignorance like this cannot go unnoticed.

It is standard practice to call-off SAR's when conditions become dangerous for the rescuers as well. It happens on the west coast, it happens on the east coast. Doesn't matter where. if you get in trouble and inclement weather moves in and it becomes dangerous for others to go out and save your ass, you're just going to have to hold tight. You are a single person and put yourself into that situation (inadvertantly or not). Your life is far less important than the lives of those trying to rescue your sorry ass whether you like to hear it or not.

Secondly, patrollers are not paid "pretty good". They do it because they love it and have a passion for it. It's exhausting work and these rescues are draining on them. They often already worked on-resort all day doing physically demanding work since the early morning hours, and are then being called upon to go out and trek around in deep snow all night long to assist someone who may very well feel entitled to their assistance.

I get what you are saying.
I was commetting to a guy who said that it were kids just following someones tracks without knowing what theyre doing. my point was that how good of a skier you are but ski patroll needs to go out and rescue you, everybody says that you are people that know nothing about the sport. But it also could have been a guide who crashed in a last run after his lessons, and because of the crash he lost his orientation and it got dark.


As fot the comment i left on the ski patroller. They creater of this thread said that he felt sorry for the ski patrollers to wake up at 5 am to go out and rescue some1. I said it was theyre job. Maybe i was a bit wrong about the pay system but thats just me

Sorry man , if my argument came as an insult man. I really dont disrespect ski patrollers. But if people get lost and dont know how to get out of the situation, and call ski patroll, people feel bad for ski patroll. It is their job and sometimes a job means getting up at 5 in the morning.
