Comments about Haiti

In the wake of the massive earthquake in Haiti, there have of course been some threads on it. I saw in some of these threads people joking around about the matter, saying things like, "No one cares about Haiti." or 2012, and things of that nature.

Now im not saying everyone is talking like that, but personally, I think making comments or jokes about something like that is completely uncalled for and should not be joked about ever. Yes, the country was in bad shape before, but these are people. Hundreds of thousands dead, and people are going to joke? Imagine if you came home and your entire family was crushed dead under your house, while people in other countries joke about it?

I think it should be a bannable offense if you make comments like that. its just not right.

Sorry if this turned into a rant, but it kinda hit me today after church because my pastor went to Haiti and showed some very graphic, sad, awful video and pictures of everything that is happening there.

Haiti has been in the Western media a lot lately because of a natural disaster, but as the western hemisphere's poorest country, it has escaped under the radar for a long time.  Look at any aerial photography and you will see the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic as a line of deforestation.  There are simply hardly any trees left. 
My mother went there twice in the '60's and was very moved.  As a family, we were planning a march trip 3 years ago, but Aristide had just been exiled and there was widespread rioting, so we canceled.  However, I still hope to go.  Perhaps in the long reconstruction process, America could positively influence the country, politically and structurally.  Despite the enormous loss, there is opportunity.

Haiti was in a horrible state. Most of the buildings in ruins. Everyone fighting over food and water. A huge number of people where homeless. The sanitation, nonexistent, human filth everywhere. Haiti was the embodiment of death, violence, and poverty. And then the earthquake hit.
