Mouthguards.

anyone else out there rocking one of these bad boys? I personally dont wear helmets I just feel like a bobble head and am never comfortable in them. Someone told me about dentist fit mouth guards, was fitted for one, and now I cant ride without it.

The amount of times just in the past week that I have landed straight on my head just going down groomers is unbelievable. Ive never caught edges before but my god its happened so many times on new skis. Its saved me from concussions a couple times now and im so stoked to rock it.

Anyone else on NS tired of their bulky helmet and just rocking a mouthguard?

I like wearing my helemt mainly for keeping my dome warm, but again it can get a bit bulky from time to time. I have thought about bringing a mouth gard, thinking they are a GREAT idea (biting through tounges = not cool). I use one once in a while (when I don't forget it), but I think any step you take to protect yourself from injury is a good idea.

well i already knocked my teeth out a few years ago skiing, so at first i was like why bother. but now after having braces as well as crowns, i feel they are worth it. More and more i get this odd feeling of being extremely vulnerable especially on urban. I think im gunna wear one on stuff i will probably fall on, or in comps were ill try stupid shit

A couple weeks ago i hit my face and bit through my lip, resulting in alot of blood and 8 stitches, so now i wear a mouth gaurd, its not that bad once you get used to it

I rock one once and awhile because my braces make my teeth line up a little weird and it huts my teeth right now on hard impacts.

But mouth guards are much better concussion preventers then helmets, mainly because a concussion happends because of the impact between the brain and the skull. I'm pretty sure they absorb the shockwaves generated from your brain hitting your skul.l In a sense the mouth guard is a shock absorber for your brain. Whereas a helmet just increases the time of impact resulting in slightly less G's to your head but not prevent your brain from hitting your skull. Helmets are more for preventing skull fractors and less for concussions tho they do help a little.

Skiing in Austria once i cut the corner of the piste trail doing a 360,as i didnt place my pole properly it bounced off the piste and rebounded into my mouth causing me to go blind for like 20 seconds and it split my lip wide open,got down to the bottom of the lift blood gushing everywhere.My lip was in two sections and all i could do was pack it with snow.Literally looked like ribena was everywhere.Healed within two days i was lucky to have missed my teeth and a scar.

WTF? a mouth gaurd protects your teeth and a helmet protects your head.  niether of them did the other ones job last time I checked.  am I missing something?  when I crack my skull on a rail how is a mouth gaurd gonna save me?

I can see using both though.  I'm sure a mouth guard would help a lot. I'm just saying it shouldn't take the place of a helmet.

I am interested in getting a mouthguard, but not a dentist made one. What's like the next alternative? I know there are some you put in hot water and then place on your mouth, but is anything out there the next best thing than going to a dentist?

the next best alternative to going to a dentist is to get the kind you boil. in fact, its not really a "next best alternative" it's pretty much the same exact thing as the ones from the dentist so it's legit. You should look into a certain kind of mouthgard though they might be called shock doctor i'm not sure. I used to have one when i played hockey and you just boil up some water to shape it but its got like special shock absorbers in it no just like the regular rubber mouth guards. they're dope.

agreed.

i have staples in my head right now because i wasn't wearing a helmet over the weekend. a mouth guard would not have protected me.

wearing helmets is still a smart decision.. sad to see so many kids ditching their helmets in hopes of looking more stylish as they ski.

i rock a ortho mouthgaurd. i got braces like 3 weeks ago and cut my lip up in the first week skiing. i wen and baught a orth mouthgaurd and where it when im ridin park. its already saved me when i came up short and went knee to face

I've had major teeth issues as well so I'm considering rocking one. Are dentist-made ones any more low-profile then regular ones? Do you guys have one that actually lets you talk and feel normal?

Are dentist ones really that much better than the mold it yourself ones?  I just use one that i molded myself using boiling water as directed on the package

These guys make amazing mouthguards, they even have a service where if you manage to get knocked out with one on they either help or pay for all your medical shit (built in insurance or somthing). you guys are newbs, don't buy shock guards. I have played football for 13 years and never used anything other than the regular mouth guards that cost something like 3 dollars at any sporting good store. Take the mouth guard put it in your mouth, decide the amount thats too long if at all, cut the excessive length off, dip it into hot water, put it into your mouth, use your tongue to apply pressure against your top row of teeth. Take it out once its molded properly, drop it into cool water to finish the molding. done. 3 Dollar solution.

i'm an athletic trainer so i deal with mouthpieces quite often... the dentist made ones are awesome, the fit perfect and feel very comfortable. if it's done properly there should be no problem with talking, however they can be expensive, and for someone w/o insurance may not be the best solution. shockdocs are really good too, some are top only and some look like doubles where the top and bottom are completely molded and theres a hole in the middle so u can breathe while it's in... these work awesome too... the regular rubber ones work great too, as long at they fit properly, when u bit down, it should leave impressions so deep that u can see light comin through the other side, but it should be deep enough that you can clearly make out the teeth... and mouthpieces can save u from severe concussion in some cases, not all btw...

Where do you get your information?
It was stated that a mouth guard stops concussions unlike a helmet. The mouth guard absorbs the shock waves that are going to make the brain hit the skull. Were a helmet slows g forces resulting in your brain not hitting your skull as hard. A mouth guard obviously isn't going to save you from cracking your head open or getting staples in your head?

that is some retarded thinking...yes a mouthgaurd is a good thing to stop you from biting your tongue off or getting a minor concussion...but i'm sure if you fall hard enough you can still get a concussion...does a mouth gaurd protect your head from open contusions?? does it stop your head from cracking open on a rock?? does it stop your head from hitting the box or the corner of the box?? no i didnt think so
while a mouth gaurd is another good safety precaution, it is in no way a good exchange for a helmet...lemme know how well it protects you next time you fall on a box, rail, or jump

valid point yes.  I am still very prone to cracking my skull or cutting my head open but I mean if your going to argue that then should you not be wearing some kind of protection on the rest of your body to prevent from cutting your arms or legs or stomach up?  I realize my brain is the most important part of my body but wearing a mouth guard is still a great alternative to nothing. 

and the kid above me wow.  you are really uneducated in how a mouth guard works my friend.  wikipedia that shit and take a lesson.

both help dampen impact a lot. nether can do it all, and a helmet is the only thing that will really save you from impact on a rock, tree or rail

check if people in your town have custom mouthguard fitting buisnesses, i know where i live theres a lady who custom makes them out of her basement for 45 bucks.

They're better then all dentist ones, the dentists in this town all refer kids to her.
