The knockout stages will be over by tomorrow. Who do you guys have winning the whole thing?

I'm really pissed that Marseilles just missed a penalty, but at least Chelsea are still in it.

If Sebastien Frey didnt decide to retire from international, he could eaaasily be the go-to keeper for France...

I liked all the people backing Chelsea on the first page of this, shoulda never let Mourinho go. I'm a Liverpool fan so I can't talk.
Robben's volley to put out Man U was a stunner, and Ribery's that was saved was an absoulute screamer, even if the guy is a dick.
Either way, no English teams, I'd like Inter to win, but... Lionel Messi is carrying Barca home so I gotta give it to them.

I became an EPL fan and thereby a Chelsea fan during Mourinho's last season and I was never too impressed with the style of football he had the team play.  I do realize though that he did a lot for the club in the couple years prior to my liking them, but I don't know how much he could have done in the future.

Anyways, Bayern looked sick in the second game against Man U.  The goal by Robben was insane!

mourinho is now only a really good manager if he is given all the money he wants to spend. His most impressive period was when he was with porto. He'll probably end up replacing fergie at manchester, contrary to what seemingly every chelsea fan seems to think.


i also really hope UEF put into effect the rule they were debating over, about how clubs that use outside sources of money would no longer be allowed to play. I'd love that. It would change the game back a bit, and the superclub situation wouldn't be as bad.

right, he made some good goals. but i dont see him as fitting in this system as eto'o. he is a quick, fast striker who excels in open space and at scoring with one touch.

and you said it. with the added value of eto'o (although i heard that the overall value of ibra was around 60 or so, meaning eto'o "costed" ~20) and the fact that eto'o was better than decent, i dont know if he will ever get that money back into the organisation.

almunia is a fucking idiot and i can't even count how many times i yelled at the TV over him.

Afraid lloris will probably be too expensive for arsenal, and lyon never makes transfers easy....but i have hope wenger will put in a bid. If you have a solid keeper, everything else comes together.

the initial value was upwards like 65 million $ with his contract... then add on Eto'o, which was like 20mil$, and THEN add the loan of Alieksander Hleb (10million euro), and THENNNN add on the other 2 million euro they had to pay Malmo... and you come to a grand total of like 99 million USA ca$h dollar bills.

As far as him fitting into the system... I think he's a fine fit. He gives them height up front, which is something Barca did not have with Eto'o. and I feel like he's a much better playmaker, as he can make assists all day long. He's kinda like a big wing, who can play up front, and who actually has really good speed, and acrobatic skills. Eto'o is faster on the sprint, sure... but he doesn't have the physical presence and multi-dimensional ability that Zlatan has.

Still. 99 million is a lot to spend on a player. even if Zlatan's as amazing as he is.

Whatever though.. Barca has like unlimited money... and they have to compete with an reinvigorated Real Madrid...

You are probably right. Apparently we were also looking at the German #2 but I forget what his name is. Chamak (sp?) is supposed to be a sure thing in the summer but I have not seen him play too often and can't rate him.

They went to the last qualifying match before the group play began. They went out to Arsenal 5-1 on agg... Not fun times... Then they went out in the Europa league because they kept Drawing in games they should have won... So out of europe they went...

Since then, they were absolutely terrible in league matches.. recording only 1 point against the fuckin huns all year, drawing in high scoring cames against Dundee United and Aberdeen... and then having a straight cuntup against St. Mirren of all sides... losing 4-0. i've never seen such a loss.. much less to the shite that is st. mirren..

Not to mention, we sold half the team to fucking Middlesbrough including McDonald who seemed to be the only guy who could score for us... Robbie Keane's now playin in, but he's only here on loan anyway. Samaras isnt bad though i suppose, and Rasmussen's a good chap, but why dump your bread and butter with mcdonald?



Why the fuck did Strachan leave anyway. Shit...

Oh well. Neil Lennon's now the boss... lets see how that goes.

Amen to that
barthez was one of the best in the world cup four years ago (aside from Buffon's legendary performance)
they did have coupet as their replacement for barthez, but he was way tooo inconsistent and was also getting old
i believe lloris wll be able to carry france to the finals where they will win
the whole french team is looking almost like they did in 1998. they've got ribbery, trezegay, henry as powerful strikers, and their defense will be strong with viera and lloris

Barthez was the worst keeper Man U ever had though.
And as for Viera, he's well past it.

Barthez was an international keeper, which is quite rare to see. For France he flourished, yet he seemed to not be nearly as good for clubs.

I think it was because he was so prone to stupid mistakes, so only having to play a few times a year didn't give him enough opportunities to mess up as playing weekly.

Viera is past it, i love him, but it's time to go.

just another example where all people thought that barca will just go through. but they played bad and lost. inter had waay more scoring possibilities (although barca also could have made 2 goals)

but still, thats how it goes. the penalty was questionable, but the ref gave yellow so quick so i think that its ok.

bayern was more than solid. great performance. never forget that lyon kicked out real and bordeaux, so its a good team.

sad that ribery wont play in the final, but who cares, its only one game and everything can happen.



if i had to bet, i would say inter. they played great against barca and now can build up two defensive walls and wait for break chances. if they score once, barca has to score 3 goals, so imo, with the strength of inters defense, i would say that one goal by inter will be enough. and barcas defense is not good enough to prevent that.

apparently no one told lyon it was an important game. They just keeled over and died. Oh well. Making it to the semis is impressive.

I think people are underestimating barcelona far too much. 2 goals, and they win. And if you've watched them this year, scoring 2 goals at the nou camp is not anything particularly ridiculous for barca.

The last ten minutes were SUPER exciting. I thought they had it after the goal on Eto'os handball. But it's a Bayern vs. Inter final. I've got a good feeling Bayern can win, Inter won't be as big favorites as everyone is saying.

it was keita with the handball..eto'o plays for inter.

anyway, great game by inter, awful reffing. they can't bring some ref in from the lowly swiss league and expect him to call the game correctly, especially a high stakes game like this.

Finally after 9 years of waiting we have finally made it to the finals.  Bayern almost getting knocked out in group stages was a possible sign of them not going anywhere this year, but they have pulled through and played their hearts out.  Robbens goal to put Man U away was amazing, and then olic's hat trick in the second round against lyon was jaw dropping.  Van Gaal has proven to be a great choice behind Bayern this season.  With 2 games left in the Bundesliga season, and Bayern tied for first this year has been nothing but success for Bayern.  It's going to be a great final in Madrid between Bayern and Inter, but if Bayern keeps playing the way they have, and we get all of our hurt players back up to good health we should do well.

of course, inter is favored by most people. but just get that arsenal game out of your head. barca played good yes, but arsenals defense was so unprofessional it wasnt even funny.

and barca had no weapon to get through that wall. they never tried to get to the line and bring crosses from there. they always tried to go with the head through the wall (middle.)

bayerns game is all about attacking on the wings and get the ball into the middle, so maybe they can make 1-2 goals. and inter is not that good offensively, so they wont score a whole lot of goals even when you remember that the defense is the "weakest" part of bayerns team.

after beating barca who's really better to beat.
when was the last time a german team won the champions league?
Inter have much better squad depth and creative talent than bayern.
you need more than just one player to win the champions league (robben)

well, its not that long ago, it was 2001, and 2002 leverkusen was in the finals.

this is not a valid argument since italian teams havent won it like 5 times in a row or so.


inter has maybe a better depth, but not a better creative/offensive department. even without ribery, they have robben, olic, müller and altintop (and can bring fresh klose/gomez from the bench). all good players on their respective positions, and with the (likely) defensive-minded play of inter, i see no problem for the bayern defense.



really it comes down to this: one of the best offensive teams against the best defensive team. and dont say "baba, they stopped barca, WHOOOOOAAA". barca played bad, had no scoring threat, everything was so easy to predict. they never tried to get to the line and bring the cross. thats how you play against such teams, and even without ribery, the wings are manned quite well.


if i had to bet, i would bet on bayern. but it will be very close i think. cant think of anything more than a 1-0 or 2-1 or so or even extra time or penalties.

i know what you mean and i dont want to offend you right now, but in general i hate it when people say "ooh, bayern only has robben and olic", but when in reality its the same for every team.

take away messi and xavi at barca and see what you got (or iniesta as in the second leg against inter). rooney was so important for manu that ferguson risked his WC appearance although a 40 million € guy sits on the bench. maybe barca and manu have better depth, but every team has STARTERS for a reason and not just 20 equal players. if they werent important, they wouldnt be starters, everywhere.

there is a reason they have them and YES, without robben and olic, they probably wouldnt be here. but all in all, its the best "team" (spiritwise) as of now. came back 3 or 4 times when they were almost eliminated, that is also a part of football.

I'm not saying the team just consist of those two guys. Everybody plays his part in bayerns game, if you think of Lahm or van Bommel. It's an awesome team and they definetly have the spirit to win the game, especially if they score the first goal. Otherwise inter could try to play their defensive wall tactic for the rest of the game.
