So I watched this today in Biology and was really intrigued by it. It's definitely worth watching for 5 minutes. Please watch and comment on what you think.
Ok so there's a little more to this video than it shows. A woman had an eye disease where it makes to many blood vessels and so they put in a gene that said make more blood vessels but made it look like a virus. The "cop" started destroying the gene and the woman is slowly gaining her vision back and they think it can happen to things such as HIV, Arthritis, or even cancer
ok, this works maybe for genetics?
but what about cancer...?
cancer obviously doesn't look good to the human body. how do we reverse it?
how about AIDS?
this really only works if the body thinks something is right, but it isnt. most time the body realizes it's being harmed, and then there is no "reverse psychology" to fix it
If it showed the rest of the video, viruses have a double copy to them that are mirrored. The "cop" sees that double copy and destroys every gene with that code. So if we inserted a cancer gene that was double copied and the "cop" recognized it as a virus, it kills every gene in the cell, thus killing the virus.
but the body already fights cancer and aids, adding a fake cancer to trigger the fight against the cancer wouldnt really matter since its already fighting
The virus enters cells and duplicates itself until the cell blows up. If we were to add this to, say, an HIV infected cell, it would kill the virus inside the cell, thus reducing the virus size.
Idk how it would work with cancer since its not a virus. Thats just what they said in the video.
The video you watched is a incredibly over-simplified description of how cells work. You cannot apply this to anything, because it is so much more complicated than that.
i didn't watch the video, but i'm curious what eye disease the lady had. treatment for ocular disease with neovascularization can be treated with anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) which does a good job of stopping new vessel growth. i believe some of the drugs are also anti cancer because if you stop new vessel growth then new tissue growth can't happen.
Yes, but it also doesnt explain the system properly...
That doesnt explain how cells work at all, a dude writing shit in a tower and throwing it out the window to a bunch of chefs with some cops running around to make sure shit doesnt get fucked up is not how a cell works... Its a fuckload more complicated.
Also, this is a natural defense cells have to viruses. When they see a virus, they fight it. You cant make them fight it more by throwing more virus-looking things at it.
I don't think you guys realize how decremental to society this might be. Think about it, curing every single disease in the world. Allowing people to live much longer than they should. The world is already strained by the current population of humans. As evil as disease is, it helps us by controlling the population and it offers a Darwin style check to humanity.
Yeah, you think world hunger and global warming is bad now, just guess how bad it would be if we doubled the population of the world. You think farms could produce enough food to back up all the extra mouths to feed? What about places to live? It would be chaos. Disease has its awful parts, but it is absolutely necessary for society.
