Calling all Military men and women (US onry, sorry Canada)

Alright guys, I need some input. I'm extremely interested in joining the Military (leaning towards Air Force) but I have one rather large obstacle in my way. Unfortunately, I have asthma which is a dis-qualification to join any branch and in order to get in needs to be medically waivered. I've been seeing an Asthma physician since I was 8 (still do to this day at 19). So basically I have a few questions that still haven't been 100% answered.

1. Do you know/seen people with Asthma in the Military who got it waivered (seeing Doc past age 13 + Inhaler)

2. If you do get waivered, do they give you an inhaler just in case?

3. Say I do lie about my Asthma, and in Basic I tell the doc's that I need an inhaler -- Is this grounds for getting kicked out?

4. Is there anything to improve my stock? I scored a 76 on the Practice ASVAB and am sure with a little studying I can get mid 80's to 90 on the test.

my family is currently hosting an exchange student from switzerland and this is what he told me. if i ever go to europe, he told me to tell people im canadian not american. think about that, the rest of the world does not like us. maybe we're doing something wrong. just thought i would throw that out there

I probably shouldn't even be bumping this thread seeing as how much of a shitstorm it became, all I have to say is that the peopel who say that joining the military is "stupid" or for those with low iq's or whatever are the ones who are retarded. Our country woul dbe in no position politically to do anything wihtout our military presence, and the people who serve are doing so to do something special with their lives and somethign they can be proud of. It is a good thing for a lot of people whether you are poor or rich, its a positive life change for a lot of people. ANYWAY... thats not why I bumped this. that would be asking for more trouble, and this IS NSG.... Most of the peopel who are against it are rich cowards who just dont want to get shot at so they hide behind the excuse that they dont agree with the war. Political beliefs and serving in the military are really diferent things. Not everyne is going over their to steal oil and kill babies ya know. Look at me. Going off on tangents again.

Anyway, the reason I am posting is because I am thinking of joining .My first choice is the navy, but I really want to join the marines. The reason I am thinking of joining the navy is because My cousin is currently in the navy, and my grandfather also was for over 20 years, leaving the service as a lieutenent comander (O-3 I think?). My problem is I have quite a bit of run ins witht the law.  Multiple traffic tickets, I have like 6 pts on my liscence (should have like 12) , When I was 16 I got multiple misdemeanor charges for graffiti, I got a UPM (unlawful possesion of marijuana, a violation here in NY since its been decriminalized)  about 2 years ago up in plattsburgh, and recently got another UPM, and possesion of a controlled substance (adderall... 2 pills) a  class A misdemeanor, these 2 Iwill obviously have to take care of before I do anything. Is anyone on here in the service that knows anyting about this stuff. Am I still eligible to join? Or is this too many charges? Does the fact that it is ADD medication make a difference?

I figures I'd ask in here since all the stupid hate has already been said taken care of (hopefully, but this IS NSG so nothing would surprise me). And just to make things clear... I dont support the war, but IMO joining the service is making the war work for me, and it would be a positive life change, not only financially but I need to do something... more. I cant jus tsit around living off the fat of the land anymore. I want todo something bigger than that. Thanks to everyone who is respectful in advance. Anyone else can go choke on a fat cock.

I'm not sure but at least for some branches asthma depending on how bad is enough to disqualify you.

Before you join anything, you should really look at things and make sure it's really what you want to do. Serving your country is great, but you need to make sure that what your doing is actually serving your country. Plenty of politics and bullshit involved these days.

If your squared away with grades and phyisical fitness, they will make everything else go away. especially the Marines, but i suggest you think twice before you join the Army or Marines because your gonna get deployed and we're in a war.

ive thought about joining the military a bunch recently but it always comes down to do i want to represent  the US imposing democracy on people that clearly dont want it.  i would love to just run up on people with a machine gun and kill them. but rather iraqis or afganis i rather do it to the morons of the westboro baptist church.

It isn't like the Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force are not going to get deployed either. My buddy in the SEALs has been deployed 2 times already. Of course that is a special forces group though so not a great example.

Being deployed on active duty isnt really something I'm worrying about, bot only is the pay better, like panda said, but thats kind of the point of joining, to go on active duty and actually do something. Chances are I'm NOT going to get shot at, blown up stabbed, or captured.

What do you mean squared away with grades? I did pretty well in HS, but I've recently dropped out of college because I just didnt think it was for me and I ad been geting horrible grades.

 Plus I could dress up like the guys from COD

I know for the Marines that to get in the infantry you have to have pretty decent test scores and really REALLY good rifle range scores. Not many people just get sent to the infantry anymore.

That and just in like your SAT and other things like that. If you have the chance pick up "One Bullet Away" and Nathaniel Fick goes into what it takes to be a Marine officer but he talks about the requirements to be in the infantry too.

lol air force deployments are FTW (for the most part) when my dad was in the war, he was stationed in oman, right next to a mall with all americanized stuff. His day would be like such

Load up planes with either bombs or rescue gear, deploy said planes to iraq
lift
goto chilis and get dinner

im pretty sure im joining the army after college. I want to do Airborne Rangers or if my bad eyesight and flat feet keep me from being on the ground i want to fly apaches. (you can have glasses or contacts to fly them, and i dont think flat feet are a problem anymore.)

you have always been able to fly helicopters as long as you have correctable 20/20 vision. My dad was gonna fly blackhawks back in the 80s and it was the same way. he went to school and got his CFP instead.

I hope ur a perfect human being. You can have never broken a bone, perfect eyesight no chronic illness and need to pretty much be in the top 1% of ur class. at least to fly fighter jets.


What is good about heli's though is when you leave after the 6 years there are so many options. I was thinking about flying heli's for the NYS Troopers after (they make like upwards of 100,000 a year to start) or fly med evac heli's at hospitals.

Ugh, I wish I could join the Marines but I have a fucked up leg (my left knee is banged up and my entire left leg is like 3/8 of an inch shorter than my right) and super bad eyesight so I can't.

the eyesight is fine as long as its correctable (glasses or contacts) idk about the knee though. my friend was deadset on joining the marines after high school, he was signed up and everything then he decided to not lie about back surgery and they turned him away. he was like super depressed for awhile. felt so bad for him.

lol wellllll I chose electrical engineering as my major, which the air force loves. WHICH in turn had the air force offer me a full ride for 5 years, non competitive. Which means I just pass the AFOQT and physical and Im on my marry way. The best part, is that this college that is giving me a full ride has nearly a 100% pilot slot likely hood, or whatever you want to call it. Last year, two MUSIC MAJORS for crying out loud got pilot slots

I want to say fighters. If I had my choice it would be the A 10, my dream plane, the most badass plane we have right now. Problem is, afaik A 10s are limited to reserve units right now. I also have a soft spot for C 130s, my dad was a crew chief on them for about 12 years after being in some fighter squads as a mechanic, I basically grew up around C 130s, theyre like my big brother haha.

No reconstructive surgery on my knee but I had a calcification under the skin from my days as a Slalom racer and hitting the gates (I didn't use shinguards cause those are for pussies).

flying helicopters would be sick. I'd love to do it but motion sickness kinda makes me lean away from that.

i'm interested in going in after i'm done with school in a few years, as an officer. No idea what i'd do for the army, but i think it would be a good experience overall

Yeah I'm hoping to fly too somehow. Either by transferring to ROTC or looking the guard. The Air guard isn't nearly as bad ass but they still hire and train pilots so why not try. I had knee surgery but as long as I get the screws out and the knee is 100% you can still fly.

Anyone else have anything on flying AF?

Doesn't make any sense, Captain still considered a Junior Grade officer, next ranking would be Major, first Field Grade Officer Rank. Lower Rear Admiral I am assuming means Brigadier General, and that would of meant she straight skipped, Major, Lt Col, and Colonel. Highly highly unlikely.

Captain is higher than all those ranks in the Navy. A Captain (Navy) out ranks a Captain in the Army by a long shot. You can't have the Captain of the ship saluting everyone and there brother that's higher ranking.

i dont think you would be able to get a waiver for the air-force. they are currently getting so many recruits that they have almost more than they could ever need, and are therefore becoming very picky with who let in.

that said, the army or marines would probably, after you proved to them you could still function, grant you a waiver. especially if you are as physically fit as you say you are.



i dunno if this would work for you or not, but i think my brother was taking some medicine awhile back that was supposed to end his allergies for good. i might be mistaken about that really existing, but i would talk to a doctor and see if there are any permanet fixes to your allergy problem.

Best of luck with the military. I am joining the Canadian Infantry Reserve in 2 months and I hope to get deployed 1 or 2 times once I am 18. How did your parents react? mine are like completley opposed to it but they figure they dont have a choice.
