Killington Update!!!! (*with pics)

Snowmaking underway at Killington

Snowmaking is underway for the 2009-10 season at Killington Resort. We started at 1 a.m. with a number of guns going on Reason in the Northridge area. By later this evening, we expect to have a number of Low E Ratnik guns going on Rime and Upper Great Northern.

Mother Nature also helped us out with 4 inches of new snow at Killington Peak and 1.5 inches at K-1 Lodge.

Based on the current forecast, we’re expecting good production for the next four-six days as overnight temperatures ranging from the middle 20s all the down to the middle teens. The long-range forecast shows another cold weather system moving in around the 24th.

As for opening, we're still shooting for early November. However, we will open as soon as we can provide a quality top-to-bottom skiing and riding experience here at Killington.

"Tom has already said they may make a run for the bottom this week... They say above(to midstation) that they will open as soon as they can (with quality surface). They were scheduled to start snowmakng Oct 26 - that went out the window as soon as the cold arrived, today... I was just up there this afternoon and it certainly appeared they were getting ready to open, SOON!!"

 tom i believe is the head of snowmaking..
 but either way its looking nice :)

If any resort knows how to waste money its killington. Never in the past has the weather worked out in their favor. In another week its gonna be 60 degrees again and theyre gonna lose all the snow that they are blowing right now. It would be nice to get some pre utah shred though.

It depends on how you look at it.  If you look at it from a cost/benefit analysis from a number of different ways you never know if they think they are wasting money.  Maybe the benefit they see of being the first resort open on the east coast out weighs the cost.  From a marketing standpoint, being able to claim the first open on the other side of Colorado is pretty legit.  They can get back to saying they are the first to open.

They seem content to hammer the upper mountain with snowmaking and have made no sign of a push to the lower half of the mountain.

My guess is that they knew they couldn't get a win against Sunday River, so they are fine with blasting away some major snow up high and have much more than a white ribbon for their opening day which will likely be right after the next bout of cold weather.

They're just making an effort to create a quality product for their opening day. They're still pushing to open as early as possible, which is a big improvement over past years. I'd expect some surprises from Killington and their mentality this year.
