Ive been thinking about subscribing to a ski magazine lately. I bought a Powder mag to check it out and it was alright. Kind of boring, with very short articles. Anyone else have experience with Powder? The next one on the list is Freeskier. I havnt had a chance to read any but I will probably pick one up in the near future. Any feedback on Freeskier? Those are the only 2 Ski mags i know. What are some other good ones that you are subscribed to NS? Content is definitely over pictures, i rather read then make a collage of my favorite skiers :P
Good call, I saw it in a bookstore the other day and it looked pretty dope.
Skiing Magazine is a good one too.
"You only have 6 posts, so you should probably go with the griffon, seeing that someone with such low posts would never need anything over 12 din. I mean I have just over 100 posts and ski 14 din binders, so u would have to work your way up, smell what I'm steppin' in.......... " - theNUTZ
Are you kidding me? Did you even read the 2008-09 Resort Guide? It was hilarious -- the topics/categories they chose definitely had nothing to do with the "resort" aspect of it at all. It had some of the requisites like "best powder," "best resort," "best place to ditch the crowds," etc., but it also had some new categories. "Scariest surface lift?" (The Roca Jack, Portillo, Chile.) "Best place to buy a guilt present?" (Aspen, CO.) "Best BC Access?" (Jackson Hole, WY.) "Best legal car camping?" (Taos, NM.) "Scariest Access Road?" (Valle Nevado, Chile.) Hell, there's even "best meat market" -- hint: not "actual meat market," that goes to Europe -- (Harry O's, Park City, UT). I used to think Skiing Magazine was gaper-esque. No longer. The new editor and owners have really done a great job of revitalizing the mag.
Perhaps you're thinking of SKI Magazine?
OP: I subscribe to Freeskier, Powder and Skiing. They are all great. My favorite is definitely Powder, though.
america, fuck yeah.

(on May 14): Schweitzer closed with 140 inches of snow at the summit. They got 5 new inches May 13th for a summit depth of 134". Remind me why they closed again?
the ski journal is dope, i just started subscribing to it about a year ago...way cooler than alot of the other mags out there and is super well done. Its focus is actually on the love of the sport, and not on shity ads.
p.s. there's prob a reason why the other mags are so cheap
Magazines are a dieing medium and not worth it anymore. The only reason to buy ski magazines now is for the photography (mostly to look at while on the can). The Ski Journal is really the only one worth buying. But I think subscriptions are really not what they used to be (I used to subscribe to 3 and now read 0). Spend your money elsewhere.
ONE rollerblading magazine gave me hope for print media. i used to think magazines sucked, then i was just like, wait, freeskier just sucks because their photos are terrible. theres good ones every once in a while, but pick up a ONE mag. its like 60 pages of banger photos and good articles.
oh yeah, and skateboarding mags. and snowboarding mags.
Cause there is no money in ski photography (at least compared to other forms of photography). And there is/will be room for magazines with great photography (thanks to the bathroom). Not sure if they will be able to survive just on that though. But the "standard format" magazine is dieing/dead. Reviews (gear or resort) are irrelevant because no one (except old men who read skier) trusts them(plus there is a million reviews online). The entire "event coverage" thing is lame since magazines are written so far in advanced. Magazines (and print media in general) have to make drastic changes or they will be completely swallowed by online media.
What a loaded comment. There are loads of good ski photogs. Too bad the people in charge of the magazines only pick people shooting for specific sponsor dollars. There was a reason that the epics in last years issues of Freeskier BLEW NUTS for the most part. They only picked pictures that represent the sponsors that pay their bills.
There are of course some exceptions, the cover shot on the FS photo annual was incredibly baller. And the articles.... well they're written at the level the mag is aiming for. That's for sure.
Don't blame the photographers. Blame the magazines. I understand ad space and making money, it's got to be profitable to exist right? I just can't understand why the editorial content they CHOOSE can't be a little more diverse than what the sponsors are paying to put in the mag already.
It's politics. That's all it is. There needs to be a better print media for our sport, they all suck in my opinion. Based on last years magazines and their content, SKIING really stepped it up in my opinion and is the only one I'll be reading this year.
