The movie was excellent.
The positives are far too numerous to list; suffice it to say that those who loved the successors will find plenty more of the same (and more) to love.
There were though a few negatives for me:
-Too much focus on romantic subplots slowed the middle significantly. The effect was that the final act felt rushed. Unfortunately, the final act was by far the strongest in terms of plot development, so the overly long middle really hurt the impact of the climax.
-I've not read the book, but I'm certain that I could pinpoint the exact moments throughout the film where one "chapter" ended, and another began. The problem with that is that the film felt incredibly episodic, and thus lacked a bit in terms of flow and momentum.
-I think largely due to the fact that I've (and everyone else for that matter) become "accustomed" to the wondrous world that is the Harry Potter universe, some of the problems in terms of plot, dialog, and characterization really shined through. Basically, I wasn't as wrapped up in the atmosphere as I had been in previous films, so some of the "leaps of faith" as far as accepting certain plot contrivances were harder to make. I found it harder to "believe" particular characters, and/or their actions, at different points.
Let me finish with saying that I've only read the first four books, and then only once a piece, nearly four years ago. I didn't think them to be worthy of the hype they generated, and chose to reread Stephen King's Dark Tower series for a second time rather than finish the other books. I say that to qualify my opinion as that of a definitive NON Harry Potter fanboy.
That being said, this film was another fantastic entry into what is becoming increasingly difficult to deny as the greatest film franchise of all time. The level of consistency from film to film (6!!), especially considering the fact that there have been a handful of different directors, is absolutely fucking amazing. Honestly, I can't think of any other franchise with more than 3 entries that can even touch these.
