as cool as it seems now, later in life you're going to wish you spent that money on something other than subs. Been there, done that, I know how I feel about it. But if you're gonna do it, buy everything on ebay. get JL W6s or something. wire everything yourself too

JL all the way, and if you get something else do not go over ten inch drivers in your jeep, it will sound tighter and better anything over a ten in a car is stupid.

yeah, a couple years ago I bought subs.  It was cool for a little while.  But looking back on it I would have rather bought other things.  Now i've taken them out and they're just sitting in my garage.

But its your money do what you want.

One of these with a decent amp is as or more powerful than 2 standard 10s. I haven't demo'd them but a kicker rep told me that. Don't spend too much on the system... after a while you'll wish you had that money for something else.

I had to 12" alpine type-r's in my 06 jeep grand cherokee and it was WAY TOO MUCH bass, one twelve or 2 tens should be sufficient.

I got a kicker L7, the square sub, with a kicker zx 700.5 amp, and it kills it.  but i am looking to get rid of it if you want it.  ill hook you up.

I used to have a Kicker 15L7 with a DEI (Directed) 1100d amp. It was alright, although I think they were over-rated and didn't have much sound quality, especially for the price. Now this was back in their probably, second year of production or third year. So things could have changed.

There is also the L5 I think, or was, maybe they don't make them anymore who knows. They were less expensive square subs.

Back in 2005 all the rage was RE Audio. I have (2) 12" RE Audio XXX subs (65lbs a piece I think?) in a 4 or 5 cube ported box tuned to 30hz. I paid $840 I think for these subs in 2005, and used they go for half. These have hit 147.2dB on the new mic's that they use to meter. For comparisons sake - that level of sound will cause difficulty breathing, your vision blurs with the bass.

I found the XXX's to be really good in terms of sound quality. I've heard JL Audio W7's and Image Dynamics IDMAX subs. All kinds of "SQL" subs, and they were not as loud, and were in my opinion comparable in sound quality.
To achieve the level of sound I bought a 260 amp alternator (@ 1800rpms) and 180amps at idle. I replaced all the wiring for the battery under the hood with 0 gauge to the trunk. I then put in a Napa Orbital battery and wired it in parallel. Then I ran 0 gauge in to a distro block then 4 gauge to the amps. I still do get some dimming. Oh yeah these subs are being powered by (2) DEI 1500d's. So you could say 3000w of power, but I think its more like 2400-2500w.

I don't really compete, a buddy of mine who does though says that Digital Designs is really wrecking the scene right now.

Anything at Best Buy is rather poopy.

Take it the money and life it instead like two inches, then spend the left over on decent speakers.  Good sound you won't regret later in life and an awesome looking/capable vehicle.

i think there are plenty of people on here that know what they are talking about as far as "you will get bored". I have a similar story, except mine was more to the fact the subs were cracking my windows anywhere there was a chip. Not saying you shouldn't hook up a sweet sound system.
Personally I would suggest getting a nice component system first. Get some kick ass tweeters and mids. And if that isn't enough, add a sub later to complement the system.  I have had good luck with kicker, infinity , and blaupunkt .  When you run an amp to some good components the sound is crystal clear even at max volume, no distortion whats soever.  Also it can be nice to hear every note outside your car with the windows up, not just the earthquake of a good sub.

I love my sub. I drive a 20 min everyday to college and its nice. i have had them for 2 years. get one 12 and a nice amp and your set. i have an alpine type 2 12, and an infinity 1600a amp.

My buddy has Alpine 10" type-r door speakers...they sound better than most of my friend's cars which have full blown subs.

...unless you want bass that shakes your car (which is fucking stupid, but I digress)

but two 13 inch jl w3s with a g max (1000 watt jl amp)they sound so crisp...then get some like boston acoustic speakers for your doors so ur music isnt just bass...my friend is doing 5 13 inch w3's with two gmax amps...gunna sound so dope...it shouldnt run u too much for the subs then u can have money left over for the door speakers...go jl best quality out there
