Swine Flu

Anyone worried about the swine flu beginning to make its way into the US and Canada?

I don't think it will be as bad as some people are predicting.  I think it will be like SARS-- a whole lot of media attention and panic but not a lot of deaths.

I'm in NJ and i'm pretty sure my friends girlfriend had it; she recently got back from mexico and had flu symptoms.

Double whammy!  Living in NJ and getting the flu!

But in all seriousness she's probably fine, and chances are she doesn't have the flu.  Even if she does, so far in the US the swine flu has a 0% mortality rate, and even by the most liberal estimates swine flu in Mexico only has around a 6% mortality rate.

The media's blowing it waaaay out of proportion. There's like 20 cases in the New York and CNN has army generals telling the whole world that its gonna be a pandemic.

The main reason this disease has already killed so many people is the lack of public attention and the lack of health care in Mexico. There were people with symptoms 3 weeks ago already and now there are 103 dead.

The Bird Flu has killed only 250 poeple in the whole world during 3-4 years. You can see the possibilities of a pandemic right there. The flu has already spread to Spain, Denmark, Norway and Sweden here in Europe and Finland is expecting it to land in a couple of weeks and the health administration is already saying that a couple of 1000 will die.

The only worriesome aspect is that almost all of the people who died from swine flu have been young, healthy adults and not children and the elderly like most pandemics "target" on.

So yeah, I am a bit worried as I have to travel in the most traversed public areas in Finland to get to school and work. The vaccine is probably available in 2-3 months.

As small safety measures I'm gonna stop smoking at least, as it lowers resistance. Let's hope that shit does NOT go down.

my bad everyone, i've been playing far too much pandemic, and i know mexico is a good place to start etc etc, just shut down your air/seaports, turn off your water, and close your borders and i'll get frustrated by my lack of progress and eventually go away.

seriously though, i think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion a bit by the media, so i'm not all that worried about it at the moment.
