Who's been caught with possesion of tobacco under 19?

I just got searched on a school trip and they found two cigars in my backpack. I am suspended from activities for 30 days and will have to go to court and pay a fine. Does this go on my record? This happen to anyone else?

I had no idea possession was illegal under 19?  Where are you from?  That's sorta a harsh punishment for a non mind altering drug.

i thought you were legally able to possess tobacco at the age of 16 in the US, just not buy it until 18. might be wrong though.

I live in Alaska, i bought the cigars in washington a few weeks ago for where you can legally have them when you are 18 (which I am). You cannot possess, smoke or buy tobacco products in AK until you are 19

isnt tobacco under state law and not federal though?  cause i think in washington you cant even have any on you if you are under the age of 18...  i may be wrong though.

shit i'm not sure i'd probably just tell the judge you forgot about having them in your book bag. i mean really it's a pretty worthless court sentence. i'm sure he can care less about it, he might throw it out all together?

and at the least i'm sure you can arrange something so you won't get any charges or anything on your record if he doesn't throw it out. but i'm no lawyer.

yeah i just googled it and it is under state law. like in CT it's legal to possess it at 16 but in AK it's apparently not.

yeah, i thought so...  but most of the time cops dont give a shit about it..  kinda like the cellphone law in washington state, you cant be talking on your phone without a handsfree device while driving but cops dont do anything about it unless you are driving like a moron or speeding.

wow, that seems really rediculous, especially how lax AK is on other laws... Honestly doubt the judge will care at all. Just say you forgot you had them after legally purchasing them in WA.

Actually, they recently changed the laws in CT, so now if you're under 18 you can't possess tobacco products.

Ive heard this too, BUT ive always wondered...
it is illegal to sell tobacco to someone under 18 and it is illegal to buy tobacco and give it to someone under 18, so even if someone was 16 and allowed to possess tobacco, how could they get it?
(this is all, legally speaking. obviously anyone can get tobacco if theyre not dumb)

having to go to court for posession? i have never heard of such a thing. hear in long island, ny, it is only illegal to purchase under the age of 19. even then you just pay a fine, perhaps the retailer must go to court, but never the kid. no it will not go on your record. but that's odd. when i was a wee lad i could smoke a cig in front of a cop and he couldn't say anything...

did anyone read that it was on a school trip? that is why there was a punishment. most likely the same rules for "on campus" go for on trips, which would mean no tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs.

ok so here's my consequences for having 2 (wrapped up) cigars in the bottom of my backpack during a music trip (I turn 19-legal age for tobacco in 4 months) And don't forget i bought these legally down south-

No activities for 30 days, no prom (im a senior and i had a date), going to court, $110, gotta pay my parents back for an $180 plane trip home from the trip (they were coming back on the ferry the next day),  counselor, grounded, no texting, laptop, etc.

wow that sucks!!! in PA you can possess or use tobacco at any age but you have to be 18 to legaly buy tobacco

NY it is you buy at 18 and if you were just born, it is legal to smoke and have it on you. I think if you could pull off growing tobaco too it is legal. But that would be very hard to do in NY.

Just don't smoke tobacco, its horrible for you. My friend can't do track because of it.

i think the problem was that you had cigars....
i got in shit on a school trip cuz i was smoking cigars, and i told the teacher i didnt know it was illegal for me to be smoking, and she said it was because its illegal for me to have cigars? i was kinda confused.....

WWwwoooooowwww.. Thats terrible. I figured you would get in some trouble with the school as most schools don't allow tobacco. But that fine and shit? damn. Thats terrible. How upset were your parents with all this. I figure if  your almost 19 they couldn't be too pissed. but it sounds like they were. sorry man

After all, you legally obtained them in my great state of Washington and you intended on using them yourself.

argue that, any judge in their right mind wouldn't even take this case. If you bought them in washington then washington laws should apply I think, even so, that charge is a bunch of bullshit, its 2 fucking cigars, people are crazy

Explanation

The bill prohibits the possession of tobacco in public places by any person seventeen years of age or younger. A violation is punishable by a fine of up to $50 for a first offense and a fine of $50 - $100 for the second and any subsequent offenses. These fines would be payable by mail. Annual state revenues are anticipated to be less than $100,000.
