Someone who had this happen to them is nearby, and asked me what I would have done in his shoes. Im stuck, so you tell me

You're in your 50's and fall off a metal ladder breaking your foot and slicing it most of the way through at the same time. Get to the hospital, and 10 surgeries later your faced with two choices. Keep your foot in an external fixator for two years straight, not able to put any weight on it...then face years of physical therapy...

Or just cut off your leg from a few inches below the knee.

He chose to just cut it off. What would you do?

shit...that is a tough decision

i think i would go with just having it cut off. i dont think i could handle not putting any pressure on my foot for 2 years.

definitely choose keeping the leg.

I would definitely keep the leg. I would want to be able to ski later in my life.

well money for the device and prob years of thearapy would cost a lot, but the cost of getting a prosthetic(sp?) is a lot more, plus i think i'd rather have a leg to look down at.  that's really tought though +vibes his way

keep the leg fo sho so they guy chills in a weel chair for a couple of years hes still got plenty of years ahead of him then does a redic amount of physical therapy after and he should be back ready to go somewhat in a year or two.

I'd cut it off and move on with my life. After all those surgeries I'd just want the whole ordeal to be over with. Especially at that age and considering the huge advancements that have been made in prosthetics.

I would probably have to leave this to eenie meenie miney moe.

Because both options are gay.

I work with a guy who has a gimp from a car accident of all things. If this contraption would make me like him (unable to walk normal...or ski for instance), I would be fucking pissed. I would maybe cut it off? I don't know....why ya gotta have such a hard to decide thread?

I didn't think I would be deciding over which limb to keep this evening...

wow, that sounded really dumb,(no offence )  you do realize that if you get it cut off you will not be able to put any pressure on it because it will not be there, so 2 years or the rest of your life?

thats a tough call... If it were me I'd do anything to keep my leg, but its their decision. I knew a guy in high school who had one of those things go up his entire leg. So he was basically in a wheelchair all the time with a blanket over his leg not to scare anyone.

Dude there is a guy at CWU who skiis at summit central who is a couble amputee beloew the knees who absolutely kills it. He hits medium jumps and does quite a few rails and just mashes. I also see him in my college town and he rides his bike everywhere, the guy is a badass, doesn't let anything stop him.

at my age i would probably keep the leg and just go through the 2 years of staying off of it. But if i was in my 50's like that guy, i would probably have it cut off because it probably wouldn't be long before i get to old to do anything.

now that i think about it... just below the knee wouldnt limit you too much... if i was 50 and could get a really sick fake leg then it'd be okay, you could probably ski pretty normally, considering you'd be doing a lot less extreme sh*t at 50.

but me personally, i'd never give up my leg if i had the chance to save it.
