sorry jon, but i sure wouldnt. the goggles start at 230 euros, which is just over 300 us dollars. i dont even want to know how much the "high end" goggles costs. im pretty sure i could buy crowbars, and 6 of their most expensive lenses for around 300...again, im sorry, but you had the hate coming to you.

person above me = kinda stupid cuz i havn't pair 100 for crowbars welllll i guess ever. max ive ever paid is 45 and thats with a high intensity lens.

jon, keep up the good work, and thanks for clearing things up for us here on ns. i personally thought they were ridiculously priced until your comment right here, and now it makes sense.
one thought though, would be that maybe you could make the same transition oakley has here in the us, and sell them for a little cheaper here (not too much obviously, but i think you know what i mean)

If the euro/sterling exchange rate went back up to something reasonable like 1.6 then I would consider them; as then they would be approx £143 which is a lot; but not absolutely ridiculous.

Seriously,

1. nobody has seen them yet in person to make any fair judgement about them.

2. quit bitching because they're made for a more exclusive market. 

3. I would save up and buy them to know I am one of the few who owns them.  They're baller.  Everyone would be so jealous that I own them and they don't, and that everyone else has crowbars or w.e. just like them.  They're expensive so that the hundred of lil' newschoolers on the ski hills don't all have them.  It's Jon Olson.  Everyone wants his goggles.

4. you're whining because you can't afford to ever have them, and jealous of those who can. 

5. people pay $300 for pre-ripped, holey Dolce & Gabbana shirts.  Again, it's about exclusivity.

Jon although I do think it's a pretty good business strategy, I have to ask why you said that these were targeted towards "hardcore" skiers.  all the hardcore skiers either can't afford these or already have goggle sponsors.  Not trying to hate it's just that that comment kinda bugged me.

JOSS/JOI was sick as always by the way and thanks for everything you do for the sport.  Not hating just saying 230 euro goggles just don't sound like they're meant for "hardcore" skiers

I'm sure that what he means is the 35+ rich folk who think that they are hard core skiers and need all of the most expensive and elite gear possible. i have seen tons of people like that in both of the shops where i worked (snowtrails in ohio and christy's in dillon, co). that proves that there are people like that all around. as much as it sucks that the new Jon Olsson goggles aren't aimed for our demographic, I think that he is making an excellent business decision in going that route. the goggles probably don't cost him any more to produce than say an oakley or an electric, but he's selling them for twice as much. capitalize on the people who want to be seen as the most elite. best of luck, Jon.

I wish there was some statistics on the percentage of Newschooler park skiers, and everyone else who shreds. I think it would show that we are the minority by a huge margin, just look at like Park City on a busy weekend, sure the parks are busy but that is probably like 10 percent of the people on the mountain.

So like I stated in my first response and was then clarified by Jon, he obviously did not try to make these goggles for us newschoolers, but for older people that can afford them. He also makes a great example by showing how much crowbars cost IN EUROPE, where he will be selling the majority of them, and the cost of his goggles. I believe that he has provided enough evidence that he has made what he feels to be the best choice, and not that any of our opinions really matter, but I for one agree with his business plan. I think you all need to realize he probably has 100 times more money than the everyone who has posted in this thread combined, and has obviously made good business choices in the past, so maybe all you kids should stop whinning about how you think you and your buddies will never buy a pair for that price, and respect a man that obviously knows how to make money and take care of it.

stop trying to tell Jon he has made a mistake when you have no experience in the industry to back up what are you saying.

I think jons idea is, from a business-mans point of view, great, like he mentioned he is targetting a higher price class than most other brands + i really like the design

now whos gonna be the first to produce kickass goggled for 50-100 dollar ?!

Sorry Jon, i love Joss and what you have done for the sport but by marketing a overly expensive
google to a demographic that has nothing to do with they way we ski is kind of selling out. Instead of
expanding our sport like you do with joss you are using you success to make money off of rich people. Im not saying your the only one doing it but i guess im a little disappointed. Skiing should be the common mans sport, thats where real progression happens, not the rich gaper sport so many people think it is.

neither do i except instead of putting in all that time, effort, money and creativity into giving rich
people another way to separate them selves from everybody else, why not put it towards making the sport more accessible to those that other wise would not be able to afford it.

they're goggles dude. you might be taking it a bit too seriously. If you want cheap, good quality goggles , get some crowbars. If you care about fashion and have 230 euros burning a hole in your pocket get Yniq goggles.

This is a lot like BBC ICE CREAM there hooides arent necessarily that amazing, and they're not worth $280 the average Joe. But to that guy who wants something rare and wants to spend money to stand out, it's worth it.

All I'm saying is Jon noticed there was no real high fashion boutique goggle brand. So he's filling the void. Even if most Newschoolers would say there was no such void.

correct me if im wrong jon, but your target is not the demographic that is generally respresented on this site...ala...you are going after higher end markets...(duh)
from a business stand point it makes alot of sense because entering a pool with alot of sharks when ur just a growing fish isnt such a good idea...

to the kids: THINK ABOUT IT. do you think jon is dumb enough to get off of oakley and start a business endevor that he didnt expect to succeed in? im sure the man and his partners have done avid research on what will sell, what is marketable, and what the overal goal the company is going to have.

as stated, the markets in north america are MUCH different than those in europe, and because of which, can cause some confusion on how jon is directing his company, but im sure it will do just fine...

dont forget! its the FIRST YEAR OF PRODUCTION...not many companies come out of the gate as an industry leader...it takes more then 2 weeks to develop credentials in the business world takes many years to build a business, let alot a business in a very competitve and ever-evolving market, know and loved to many as the ski industry.


so dont jump to many conclusions yet dawgs, this is just like any other business, it needs time to figure out the kinks, and see what they need to do and what they have already done well. i bet we will see numerous changes to their product/business structure after 1 or 2 years, because the amount that jon and his partners will learn in that(those) year(s) will be astronomical.

hope i made sense of it for the 'ZOMG ROFL MY PARENTS WONT PAY THAT MUCH FOR GOGGLES FOR ME!!!!MAKE THEM FREE!!! DOES THIS MEAN I HAVE TO GET A JOB?!?!?!ONE111' hahahaha

good points. especially about the cost of stuff in europe, the difference is huge. when my buddies from across the pond are around here they buy all sorts of weird shit claiming that its just that much cheaper.. i can see goggles being the same way.

yeah jon is a pretty business-savvy cat. i was being pretty short-sighted when i was talking about marketing. america is a weird place.

im all for this as long as jon lets adam delorme into JOSS next year.

but thats the thing is people have done it. Maybe not in the strictly business sense but their are organizations in snowboarding that do just that. Burtons Chill programs goal is to give kids in low income families a chance to ride and get interested in the sport. They hook them up with boards, googles, gloves and what ever else they need and take them riding once a week through the winter. Those that show a real interest have a chance to get more involved so they can keep riding.

Look im not blaming Jon for trying to make money in a niche market. If he didn't do it some one else would of. I guess im just looking at the large moral argument that we should try to get more people involved in the sport that we all love so much. Instead making expensive brands to make money lets try to create a more open atmosphere so were not for ever labeled as the rich white sport associated with polo and golf.

My problem is im trying to broaden this argument a little too far.
I think that Jons googles are a good idea from a business and marketing perspective, for sure. They will sell well because like jon said there's a market for them, but also because his name is attached to them. And this is no disrespect to Jon he is a sick skier and a really hard worker who has done so much for skiing, its his money and time and he can do what ever the fuck he wants with it.
But hey it wouldn't be a forum if less talented and less hard working people couldn't make their outrageous opinions known. I just think he could of done something better and more creative then make goggles for rich people.
and 416 think of a better response then "Stop" it gets old

Lenses aren't more than the actual crowbars that COME WITH A LENS! But otherwise still a valid point.

I would be interested to see how these goggles go, I think you guys will be surprised how well they do sell personally, even to the likes of us NS'ers.

Because we spend so much time skiing, we see it as a solid investment spending top dollar on sick gear. Someone like prince harry, who spends £50,000 + a year on a one - two week ski trip has a fairly standard set-up, and so many of these skiers just wear sunglasses.

I think TGR might be a good market alternative. The goggles are growing on me for sure, i hated them at first.

I bet you any money if Tom Wallisch came rollinthrough the door everybody would be all pumped over it- would you spend 300- prob npt- but you would stil want them- the group that he is selling to is looking for a fashionable and functional google- they do not want some big ass frames with graffitti graphics- they want a clean smoth look- solid colors and a little bit of bling help- and I can bet you any money they will sell like hotcakes- Why do women spen 400 dollars on a purse, or guys a shitload on watches- cause they look good- BTW I think they look baller as shit

As with any new brand there are a couple of questions that instantly cross my mind before even considering switching.

What sets them apart from any other brands?  The look?  No, not really.  The technology?  Not from anything I've heard about them.  Is there anything that sets them apart and would make me choose them over Smith, Spy, Dragon, Electric, Oakley, etc....?  So far all I can come up with is another NO. 

The "high quality" goggle idea makes me chuckle.  All goggles fog for me.  I fucking hate Oakleys shit and it never holds up although considered to be "high quality"...  There is only one level of quality goggle if you ask me, with very little differentiation between the major brands.

So....  I'm basically getting a very similar product at an inflated price because Jon Olsson backs it?   Uhhh..... right.  I'll pass thanks very much.  I'm not your market though, so good luck man I hope it blows up across the pond.
