We added quality... so why the youtube vids?

So we worked our brains out to get the video section quality higher... yet when I browse through I'm still seeing people add vids from Youtube, Vimeo and other sources that are way lower quality in small windows.  

Why?    When we have higher quality, why do you want to post your video on another site before putting it on here?

When we have comparable quality I really hate how the video section looks with all the embeds.   Don't you?

May be time to pull the embeds? We've done so much to encourage the use of NS vids, yet people still seem to not want to convert. Sheer laziness and habit maybe?

How about manually pulling the embeds which we know are uploaded from the user?

I do agree that the quality has definitely improved and I think it would be fine if you stopped allowing embeds, though it might be a good idea to give people a little bit of warning and explain your reasoning so you don't have a bunch of threads/posts with people bitching and freaking out about. I too think that it makes the video section look even more hectic, and in regards to looks I feel like you guys might want to simplify the individual video pages some, if that is do able. I think that all of the features on there are sweet, but sometimes I feel like there is just too much stuff on the page. Before, it was just the video or link, comments, and vid info. Maybe this is just me being an old timer, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

As long as I'm on the topic of the video section, I would LOVE to see the various sections of videos come back, like Edits/Shorts, Big Mountain and so on. It was just nice before because it was easy to sort through and look at only the good stuff, whereas now everything is on one page and vids get bummped back way faster. Sorry for getting on a tangent and kind of off topic, but this thread just got me thinking about the new vid section.

JibJib, the video categories are still there, just look above the members list in the quick links.

As far as the externally linked videos go, I have been doing noticing alot of them are simply people reposting things they find on youtube, and not things they have uploaded themselves

Tomorrow we are launching a change to incrase our video quality further from 1Mb to 1.4Mb. So all new videos will be encoded to a higher quality than before.

I feel like a large part of it is audience. NS just doesn't have the mainstream reach that YouTube does, and that, at least for me, and probably many others, can be a discouraging factor.

For example: if I had a dollar for everyone who has told me "YO, I've seen you on youtube man!" I would be well, a lot fucking richer then I am now. It's a lot easier to tell non-skiers to type your name into youtube then it is to tell them to go to newschoolers.com, search for whatever, etc.

On top of that, it's a lot easier to link to a pre-existing youtube video then it is to go through the process of re-uploading to NS. What this boils down to is laziness.

Then, you have to wonder... if you disable hotlinking, will it result in a loss of quality content that would otherwise make its way to the site? This is a little less clear. Maybe if people are forced to upload to NS it will change things, maybe it wont. I guess the only way to find out is to try it.

I probably check video once maybe twice a day, whereas photo 4 or 5 but for people not so much into photography its probably the opposite

Funny enough... videos are used just as much as photos.   Both of those sections constantly compete for the #2 most used section on NS.   First being forums, 4th being news.  :) 

And as for Mac - we recently promoted him!   He is now officially on staff as our lead moderator.   Chris has been at the site longer than I have... hell he was there from Day 1 with Harvey, and I can't think of anyone better to lead our moderating team!

I agree with Ross on this... people are going to continue to do what they're used to doing until they can't do it anymore, but I think if NS's system is actually superior the inevitable resistance to change won't be too bad. Just have to make sure our video system can handle a ton of traffic without moving at a snail's pace, and no one will have any real cause for complaint. I really like the new video setup.

This is something which will ultimately work out as intended, but as JD noted, it's not going to happen immediately - there will definitely be a lengthy transition..I'm sure that the end result will be good though.

When you upload an HD video to NS, the only way to watch it without being in the (still yucky) flash player, is to watch it in the full quality quicktime version, which takes a year to load.

SO i always use vimeo, which has super sick quality, and decent speed.

Vimeo is better because i can just put all of my videos on that and then share them with whomever i like (ns, family, friends not on ns), vimeo is just better for sharing videos imo. Its just habit to upload to there.

I think it would be cool if there was an ns/vimeo partnership going on where anything uploaded to ns (through a vimeo like page) is also on vimeo...

The NS flash player crushes quality. Thats really it... Lots of sites have trouble not crushing quality with their flash players, like blip.tv and youtube.

at least when you go into full screen mode, NS' flash player doesn't take up the whole bottom of the screen.

also, i'd like to note that my video isn't hosted on NS solely because i completely forgot about the video section.. as well as the picture section too.
if you could somehow (i dont know how) promote the NS video section, I'm sure you guys would get more uploads!

That's one of the things we're talking about right now actually. If you guys and all members could help out by reminding people that it's there once in a while when you see a link to a vid hosted outside NS we would definitely appreciate it!

Ever since the video section was updated recently I honestly don't see a noticeable quality difference between us and Vimeo and it actually looks better than youtube... but people still say it's lower quality? I don't get that, but if so, how can we make it better?

I didnt read all of the posts above so this may have been said but,

The only reason i could think of people embedding from youtube is that the youtube and vimeo videos load A LOT faster for me than the ones in the nsvideo embed thingy.

Remember, I'm talking solely about HD movies. Your quality of SD is obviously comparable to vimeo SD and better than youtube, but watch any HD video on youtube, and that same video in the NS flash player. You'll see the difference.

You are correct that we don't have HD support yet.   That will come this summer... we needed to change the whole uploader system to support massive uploads in order to do this, and that required a lot of work.   So I do understand the HD thing... but the tiny percentage of people who are actually using the HD feature of vimeo is much less than the people posting crap quality youtube/vimeo vids.

I also understand the sharing thing... thats a good point and we will work on that for sure.  Just do your best if its not HD to upload a version straight to NS.   If there are videos on here, we can work with them and buid it into all of our fun new video features.    We're going to be developing lots of awesome stuff over the summer, but it will require your vids hosted here.  

I guess really in the end just give us a chance!   Try uploading your vids directlly, even if you've posted them already somewhere else.   Try to start thinking of NS as the place to host your skiing vids, and we will work tirelessly to improve the product to the point that we don't have to beg.  :) 

In the end... we'll get it, we usually do!

We have identified this issue, and are currently working on it.   Turns out though that this is just a massive task to replace, and will take some time.   This is linked into the quality issue because we need to support massive uploads and fast uploads in order to jack up quality.  

I think the final problem to solve will be the uploader... once that is done the quality issue is easy to implement and we should be good to go. 

Give us a couple of months though, the uploader is a massive task.  Seems simple, but its linked to a lot of shit on the site.

This may be just me, but when watching a vid on NSTV, typically i'll watch it and then comment then rate it

So what often happens is i'll finish watching the movie, then right at the end i'll type out a comment and post it, but as soon as the clip finishes, it will automatically roll over to the next clip, so when i post a comment it actually applies to the following movie

May be retardation on my part, but it's definitely happened a few times..not sure if this is the same with anyone else
