Skiing and Chiropractors

So I'm considering specializing in Sport Chiropractic, but the only sports I'm really familiar with at a high level are hockey and rugby.

Do you see a chiro for ski-related injuries? If so, what kind?

if u work in a ski town it be sweet, just last week when i was in pc i like got this pull in my neck and i couldnt turn it and say a chiropractor, that shit helped out alot.

My dad has been a chiropractor for 25 years. Chiropractors fall on either end of the spectrum. Either very intelligent and good and understand the entire body or very bad and total shady bastards. Personally my father knows more about common sports related injurys than most doctors because he has educated himself. If you find a good chiropractor its fuckin money. He could help me with any injury i had whether it was an ankle or a wrist or neck. Your whole body works together as a whole and can be treated not just from the point of injury so a chiropractor can help with just about any injury. It's actually extremely indepth what a good chiropractor can do. Why does every NFL team have a team chiropractor? The point is a good chiropractor is well worth the money and more so than an M.D. for sure. A bad chiropractor is totally a joke and is the biggest waste of money. Unfortunately insurance companies favor M.D.'s who prescribe drugs making most chiropractors scum bags because they have to be to make money. Unfortunately thats the case. So do your research and find a good doctor and don't be afraid to ask questions.

wow, talk about ignorant. chiropractic adjustments, while certainly not a cure-all, are an incredibly versatile and useful tool.

while i do fail most of them fail to address soft tissue problems, the true root CAUSE of your pain, instead they only fix the mis-asligned vertebrae.

to the original poster, if you are going to go that route I would also consider learning something called ART (active release technique) which can break up scar tissue and increase joint mobility and health. this combined with chiropractor is extremely beneficial to athletes...

100% correct. I go see my chiro before I see the MD to get his opinion because he understands the body as a whole and he actually understands the effects of the injury on the body (and he skis). Anyone who thinks chiropractors (and by this I mean intelligent, honest and excellent chiropractors) are not worth the money is completely ignorant.

i went to a chiropractor once and he did a good job. he actually gave me a thorough physical afterwards too...it was nice of him but a little wierd...oh ohhh god wait a second that fucker wasn't a....nooooooooo!

chiropractors are legit, you're spine is super important and complex, so you will always need adjustments, especially if doing high impact activity.  i have to see mine regularly and i for sure feel better, if i don't go for a while i always end up with some dumb neck or back tweak that hurts for a few days,

My old chiropractor saved skiing for me by actually making my knee better when it was hurt. At the same time,   all the doctors (3 of them) told me my knee was perfect while it was hurting everytime I would land foward.

Doctors are paid by goverment here in QC and they wont do anything but telling you to use pain kkillers unless it required surgery.
Chiropractors can actually help you getting better faster with ACT and manual stretching and realignment.

I'm sorry but you're a fucking idiot. I haven't heard anyone sound so dumb since the last time I went in to a NSG thread about economics or politics.

Obviously you don't do any intense skiing, or any sport for that matter, because if you had, you'd be able to fully appreciate the effectiveness of chiropractic care. I've taken some nasty crashes that no amount of drugs could actually FIX. Funny how an adjustment can have me back on my feet in no time. I'm sure countless others could tell you the same story.

So why don't you go back to sitting in your corner and let the grownups talk. We'll let ya know if we need you to bring us anything.

To the thread creator - yes, I see a chiropractor after any significant crash. He studied the Gonstead technique, but has developed his own after 35 years of practice. It's pretty much amazing.

Where are you planning on studying? Palmer? Life? Logan? They all teach different techniques so you'll want to do a little research first. Palmer is the oldest, and arguably the best chiropractic school in the nation. If you've got any questions I can put you in touch with someone. My GF and a couple of guys on my ski team are studying there now.

I'll be studying at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. I've been job shadow and observing different clinicians there for about a week there and I love it - some absolutely amazing doctors teach there, and they have a very evidence-based, medical take on things... no c-spine adjustments for a sore ankle or anything.

ya, chiropractors are definitely legit. I'm not sure about the rules and registration to actually become one, so it's entirely possible that I don't know about the majority of practitioners. Also, there are many different techniques, so that needs to be considered.
My chiro went through a lot of shooling, doing mostly the same courses as MDs. he is a Dr. he knows his shit. when I broke my thumb, he helped me get it back on track (I was competitively bagpiping at the time - pause for laughter - so needless to say, my hands were pretty important). I also have a jaw that clicks, and he helps with that too (hurts like a bitch though). Someone asked about knees... without my chiropractor (and orthotics) my knees would be pretty effed. physio didn't really do much for them, but he gets it done. also prescribed a knee brace for it. I only get my neck and lower back adjusted (when I'm out of alignment, though he checks it every visit; sometimes it gets fixed, sometimes it's fine and he leaves it alone). All the other work is soft tissue release, as mentioned by someone else. he also gives me stretches to do. ill admit, sometimes it doesn't help a ton, but he does know his stuff and Ive never been hurt by him.

to the thread creator, I think you should go for it, and look into active release.

my aunt's a nurse and happens to give amazing massages so she hooked me up and was like DAMN you need to go to a chiropractor.
how much do they cost in general, and are the visits more costly than lets say, a physical therapist?

and how should i sell the idea to my parents, who are fed up with the costs of doctors and such for sports related injuries?

I love the whole rationale of, yea some are quacks, but mine is great.

These people are not doctors, if you don't have a Ph. D or an MD, you are not a doctor, nothing else. The majority of them don't even have a bachelor's, they essentially go to a trade school, no they didn't take 'medical school level classes' no matter what they say.

I didn't realize how fucking retarded chiropractory is until I just researched it for two minutes. This is the Scientology of the medical field. Fucking holistic healing, I didn't realize how contrary to western medicine this is. I respect acupuncture far more than this and at least that's been around for 50 times as long.

Show me one peer reviewed study that shows efficacy in anything resulting from chiropractory.

Empirical evidence, the chiropractor's only true enemy. Your anecdotal evidence doesn't prove shit, placebos have been shown to work on some people, that's cool, but not twice a week for the rest of your life. This is no different then university of phoenix or pyramid schemes. Amazing marketing, stupid people allow others to get rich. Finally socialized medicine has one positive, they won't cover this bullshit.


Cliff notes: I never realized how fucking stupid chiropracting is until I actually read about it.

You're absolutely correct. Chiropractors are not real doctors, they cannot perform surgery, they did not attend medical school, and have no medical justification to heal you in anyway. From my understanding, chiropractors attempt to mimic the hands-on manipulation that Osteopaths use in conjunction with medicine, medical school, and an actual understanding of the human body. Unfortunately, for their patients, chiropractors decided to skip medical school and do not have any certifications other than their chiropractic certificate.

On the other hand, Osteopaths are fully licensed physicians in all 50 states. Osteopaths can perform surgery, can perform general practice, and they go through training which is more intensive than that of MD's. They are trained in everything an MD they can do, PLUS the hours spent learning Osteopathic Philosophy and practice. Osteopathic training permits them to understand a minute variation from normal in a patient's body, and to correct it, before it becomes a problem detectable by standard lab tests or imaging studies.

To the thread creator, if you're truly interested in medicine, study Osteopathy, not chiropractic work. After all, it is far easier to get sued for malpractice without an MD or a DO attached to your name.

I fully believe in chiropractics. It has helped me out innumerable times, especially when I used to have cancer as a kid.

I have yet to find an MD that could have helped me the way that my chiro has helped me. Honestly I have heard an MD say "take some ibuprofin and ice" when my hips, ribs, back and one leg were out of place. Ice and pain killers are not the solution for that. And my chiro can't help me with my torn rotator cuff and nerve damage. But do some of you people not understand what chiropractors do? Of course they're not doctors. They're not going to prescribe medicines and perform surgery because that's not what they do. Leave that to the MD's and let the chiros keep your bodies,  a fully intricate mechanism moving the way they are supposed to. Quit comparing apples and oranges.

I know someone who had sex with you and left with six different STDs. Doesn't mean all girls are dirty and full of STDs.

I don't go to a chiropractor and probably never will because I'm fucking superman and don't get hurt, but I can tell you one thing, they get the fucking job done!

I know a good 25 athletes who had their careers saved thanks to chiropractors. Nothing helped, whether it be surgery, stretching, physio, prescription pills (which is the most corrupt part of the health care system btw), acupuncture, and the list goes on. They went to a chiropractor, and within a month they were feeling healthier than they ever thought possible.

Placebo affect? Maybe, but who the fuck cares, because guess what....IT WORKED.

Yes you don't need to go to med school to become a chiropractor, but saying that no chiropractors are doctors is the most retarded logic in the world. Just doing a quick search in google, I was able to find 12 chiropractors with medical degrees from reputable Universities in my area. Out of those 12, two of them had their PhD's and another two were currently getting them.

OMG chiropractor's can't do surgery! Well no fucking shit, why would they want to do surgery when they don't have to?

OMG chiropractor's can't prescribe pills being pushed by large corporate pharmaceutical companies! Well no fucking shit, why would they want to prescribe pills when they don't have to?

Take a second and think about the spine. What is it connected to? Doesn't it make sense that having a healthy spine boosts the immune system? The spine is the motherfucking highway of your body, everything goes through the spine up into your tiny little brain, so is it reallllllly that hard to believe that it has some affect on your physical condition?

All chiropractors that I've ever met have always been willing to work with you if money is a restraint. Typical visits can range from 20 - over 100 depending on xrays, etc. Your insurance should cover it though.

Tell your parents that your back hurts and you don't just want to take drugs to make it better. I'd think they'd be down with that.

Once again, you're a fucking idiot. Chiropractors definitely take medical school level classes. They study the entire body in crazy detail. Not just necks and backs. This is a very common misconception that a lot of people have. They study disease, physiology - all kinds of things because they need to know how it all works together. They go thru one of the more intense grad programs that I've seen. You're talking about 30 credit hours a trimester for a solid 3 years with only minimal breaks. It makes my MBA(accounting) program look like it was a walk in the park.

They also have to take a 4 part nationally certified board exams (like m.d.) before they can practice anywhere. Once they've done this, they receive the certification of D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) If you still don't think thats enough, then I don't know what to tell you. Everyone else knows they are doctors, including insurance companies. (Mine chiro is listed as my primary care physician.) I'm not saying you ever have to go to one, but don't just dismiss it as voodoo magic because it makes you sound very unintelligent.

You're a fucking dumbass. I don't know about the states, but in Canada chiropractors ARE doctors. Instead of eight years in university and a Medical Doctor degree, you spend eight years in university and get a Doctor of Chiropractic.
