2003 Golden Pole Awards

2003 saw skiing, particurarly new school, reach new heights. Men and women were dropping into the pipe at the x-games and lines previously though impossible have been descended. The Golden Pole Awards are the ski communities way of recognizing the incredible progression brought to skiing by it's star athletes.

Best in halfpipe: Candide Thovex
Best in the park: C.R. Johnson
Best on Rails: Tanner Hall
Big mountain flow: Seth Morrison
Big Mountain jib: Mike Douglas
Innovator: Shane McConkey
Breakthrough: Shoya Okazaki
Best Female: Sarah Burke
Best all around: Candide Thovex

hey RS4LIFE, hate to call you out on this one buuuuuttt. Jib is actually a term taken from snowboarding meaning to grind somthing (essentaly) but skiers took the word into a different context and use it to refer to newschool style skijumping. For instance, when people are doing flips and spins all day they are Jibbing. i dont realy agree with the term, because to me it refers to rails, but it can also be taken as jumping, as in the case of mike, and thats just what people use these days.

definition of jib- to bonk anthing other then snow with the bases of your skis, therefor it isnt a jump.

you seemed to skip the last part of what i said. i fully agree with you, its just some people, some wrong people, use jib in a jumping term.

ok, i started this thread and it's become apparent i have to justify some of my choices. the term Back country 'jib' was something that seemed natural. He's done great things with moving slopestyle into natural terrain. I realize the term 'jib' means grinding or bonking off something but in the backcountry it takes a new meaning. And even though C.R. hasn't been at his peak because of injury he's still shown such power in the early season.

hmmm...ok i'll give you that one. OK, next year we're changing the name. And it's be huge. Respected by all those in the freeskiing industry. And if newschoolers.com decides to make it so i'll get throphies made. and i 'd love to write articles if anyone out there is listening. and we'll have a massive awards show. it'll be a party that makes WSSF look like bingo night at the seniors home.
