I dont ever want it to happen again

Started off with a call, i needed to babaysit my eleven year old next door neightbor, because his parents need to go to hospital where his sister is, who is in a critical condition.

20:00- Arrive, Kid is crying, parents leave in the car, i let the kid watch tv, still crying, make him popcorn and a warm drink and sit with him and try keep him entertained.

20:30- Play board game with kid, try to keep him interested and play some skate 2 with him

21:00- Still playing xbox, kids stop crying, im letting him pwn me, its all good

21:30- Instruct kid to go to bed as parents said 9 30 is the time they want him in bed

21:45- Kid starts to cry again, i go into him and comfort him untill 23:00

23:00-02:00- all is well, hes asleep in bed

02:30- Phone call comes through, parents of kid, their crying, they tell me to wake up the kid, he needs to get ready to go to the hospital, his 13 year old sister died at 02:10 in the morning, may she R.I.P, they instruct me to tell the kid, why? Idk, but i have to do my duty.

02:40- Wake kid up, tell him to get his clothes on, kid starts to cry, i calm him and he gets dressed

02:50- Sit the kid on the couch, basically say " That was your parents on the phone, im afraid your sister is, uh, dead" Then he starts to cry, and i hug him (Im you call me a homo, stfu, his siter just fucking died) and tell him how great his sister is bla bla bla, and how she will be missed, and how shes had a great life and is now in a better place

03:00-03:30- Comforting kid

03:40- Dad comes picks kid up, hes crying, i just stand their shocked, he offers me 1000 dhs (Yeah, thats alot, good few 100$) I dont accept it, he keeps it and drives away

03:40- now- i sit here shocked, heres my question NS, did i do everything right, could i have done it differently to do it better, it really is bugging me, i want to know if i did everything right, i want the kid to be ok. And, is it right for the parents to ask me to tell the kid? Help me NS, im still in shock!

I don't think they should've made you tell him but then again if it was my kid I would want to tell him. Idk, keep in the the family i guess. I think you did all you could do. Don't regret your actions, you can't change it. It was good of you to help a neighbor in need no matter what the circumstance.

But I do applaud you on not accepting the money. Of course the skrilla wouldve been really nice but I wouldn't have taken it either. Plus think ahead, they're going to need that money, they have a long road ahead of them.

Don't question yourself, you did a good job and that kid will always remember how you were there for him.

Thats sorta wierd for the parents to have u tell the kid his sister died. If i was a parent I wouldve told my kid myself if I could. Who knows though, may b they had you do it cause they didnt think they could.

Yeah, i think that, or maybe, as he is 11, and smart, he would have just figured it out anyway, better telling him then him figuring it out himself i guess.

I agree with this. ^

Given the situation, I'd say you handled it really well. I mean, there's only so much you can do and I'm sure it meant a lot to the parents for you to take care of their son and be there for them during that moment.

You did the right thing, I dont think I would have the balls to tell the kid that his sister passed away, and good job on not taking the money, genuine thing to do.

the only thing i would have done differently is put his sister's passing a little less blunt.
so next time you baby sit a kid whose sister is in critical condition, try something a little less abrupt.

Yo, I agree the rents should of never left up to you to tell this kid that his sister passed away. It seems like you used a lot of tact though which is hard to do in a stressful situation like that. Don't let bug you, you did the right thing. Good luck man

i applaude you on your ability to deny the money, its the right choice, you did the best you could i dont think i could have done even that well, the situation sucks and i think you handled a shitty situation the best you could, its honorable and ill give you karma for it (ns karma and hopefully real karma)

how old are you? and you did do the right thing. i feel like that kid is going to look up to you if he already doesn't. in a few years, he's going to look to you for everything, and thats not really a bad thing. you did the right thing though, good job brah

Like someone else said the other thing I would do different is maybe be a little less blunt with telling him his sister died.

But other than that you handled it very well considering the situation.

Funny how just before reading this thread I saw my 10 year old neighbor outside while he was sledding, and I rarely ever see him.

how old was the sister? do you know what she died of?

Dude, the parents put a ton of responsibility on you and a ton of pressure, you did a great job for the situation, and not accepting the money was even smarter on your part. i give you mad reps for that man, i feel so bad for the kid and the parents, thats just something you really hate to see happen.

She had a muscle problem, cant remember the name, but your muscles get smaller over time, and obviously, your hearts a muscle, it got too small and couldnt handle it anymore, and just stopped while they were in hospital.

i think that the parents should have told the kid himself, but honestly, you sound like you handled it really well! i know guys who wouldnt even know where to begin to try and comfort someone after something awful happens! i dunno how well you know the kid but you might wanna check up on him, be a big brother to him go do fun stuff with him everonce in awhile. thats a hard thing to go through for anyone and you were with him when he found out so it might be good for him, and you.

you will be glad this happened in a couple years, it sucks to actually do it, but its something that will make you a better person, and not taking the money was great, 1000 is a shit ton to someone in our age range, and it shows that its something that meant alot to you. taking money for something like that is just akward

i dont know...  this is probably just me, but i would prefer it if someone just told me straight up what happens....

when i was a kid like 7 or 8 my dad came in to my room to tell me that my grandmother died and he was pussy footing around about it and i asked: "so, is grandma dead?"  that is probably just me though.
