Acl recounstruction (pain first day back)

hey, i had acl recounstruction about 1 year ago and just had my first day back skiing! but i had quite alot of pain in my knee when in heavy snow and skiing fast (small movements caused pain) by end of day knee was pretty sore! just wondered if any one else ever any thing similar, as i was told by a year my knee should be as good new!! thanks for the help

depending on your focus on rehab (how hard you worked )and your own body it can take a long time for you to be able to ski pain free. I had my knee done for the 2nd time in june of 06 and it is just really getting strong again. And I have been busting my ass to rehab it.

i think that is normal...your knee is back to being strong enough to ski on, but it won't feel "good as new" for a while. my knee would be sore after skiing the first season after i returned to snow after my surgery. it gets better though, so i'd say don't worry about it as long as it's just sore, not any intense pain.

Could be scar tissue being broken up.  If so, there's nothing to worry about and it'll go away as you ski more.

When I came back from surgery I had some pain in my knee but it went away after a month or two of skiing

Depends how hard you worked to get your knee back. Scar tissue is another thing. To temporarily relieve pain take a bath in epsom salt. Today is my first day walking after 50 days of using crutches. I am really sore and will only walk for school i dont think i will ski till febuary

are you wearing a knee brace?? i think its def rehab... i worked my balls off and i skied almost exactly a year later with no pain, felt completely normal.

Yeah man that is going to happen. I had the same surgery in June and feel it every day. Keep stretching and rehabbing. If you can, take it easy your first couple of days. Good luck!

ok thanks for your help guys! i spent so long doing rehab and im back playing competive hockey without problems but guess skiing a bit different, guess ill just keep taking plenty of rests for first few times! also does any one find walking in ski boots a bit sore with the postion it holds your leg in?

Is it good to wear a knee brace? Or is it more a piece-of-mind issue? I've heard that it makes your muscles not work as hard which can't be a good thing... I'm only 2 months post-acl recon but the aussie winter is approaching so i'm hoping to get a bit of shred in at some point...

I got back to skiing 4 months post surgery with no pain at all since surgery but it wasn't a complete reconstruction. I have to wear a brace for everything til 1 year but it does give me a lot of peace-of-mind. I know a couple times I landed that I probably would've tore it again if I wasn't wearing my brace. I haven't heard anything about working less but I worry about my other knee now more than the one that I already hurt.

sorry to jack your thread but i have to get surgery on my acl in a few weeks, and was wondering which graft those that have had it done choose. im leaning more towards the hamstring but am curiose as to what other skiers have done.

I was pissed that they didn't give me a choice. I had *petellar tendon* and I wish I had gotten a hamm, not that it isn't good but I think its easier to build up muscle than get 100% range of motion. Anytime I hit my knee against anything it hurts so bad cause its still tender. I can't sit on my knees either for the same reason. but hopefully that will change seeing that I'm only like 7 months out

* probably not spelled right, its in the front of your knee.

p.s. work out a ton before surgery to get it strong because that will speed up recovery soooo much more

I had the hamstring, but i now wish i had gotten the patellar tendon,
it heals faster/stronger short term, and for the first months after surgery its really easy to tweak your hamstring if you choose to go that route

I had the patellar tendon too. It's been very painful and a constant reminder I hurt my knee, I still can really go down stairs correctly. But the good thing it is supposed to be the strongest and allow you to return to sport the soonest.

go with the hammy i went with the hammy and am 7 weeks out of surgery and it doesnt feel amazing but its better than being fucked with patellar where its gonna be sore there for the rest of your life.
