Lower the drinking age

I just got this email:


Change.org is soliciting policy ideas from the public to influence the new administration and congress. Lowering the drinking age to 18 is one of these new policy ideas. We can make ourselves heard if we all go and vote!

where are you? In Germany its 16 for beer, 18 for hard alcohol (I am half German)

Canada. 18 for all, but nobody follows that rule. I can order a beer almost anywhere without being asked for ID

Here in Quebec the drinking age is 18. I wish it were higher though, drinking underage is way more fun for some reason. Just enjoy your youth while you can mang.

I used to think the drinking age should be lowered...but recently seeing how immature i was then I don't think lowering the drinking age would cause anything but problems for the general public. I just feel like putting 18 year olds behind the wheel after they've been drinking is going to lead to a lot more bad than good...plus then you've got highschool age kids with the ability to purchase alcohol and supply to younger kids effectively now having younger kids drinking underage.

So basically what i'm getting at is nothing will change if you lower the drinking age you'll just lower the age people start drinking.

nope it is definitely not 18 for all of canada..... alberta, quebec, and im not sure where else, but definitely not everywhere in canada has the drinking age at 18

oh haha yeah. sorry if i came off angry or anything, im in university, and was 18 as of september 1st so i have to wait one more full year before i can legally drink, and it sucks so much

Not necessarily.

I don't think it would really matter if the age was lowered to 18, because chances are if the drinking age stayed 21 and you were 18 and you drank, you would still get/find alcohol anyways, with no problem. By the time most kids are at least 18 it's not very difficult for them to get alcohol. Also if the age was lowered think about all the bullshit colleges would get themselves out of (from underage drinking on campus).

yeah true story man. my thinking was about drinking and driving though, when i was 18 i was so stupid and i did that shit on occasion and thank god i didn't hurt myself or anybody else but i feel like if it was even easier for younger kids to get alcohol that the DUI rate/injuries and deaths from drunk driving accidents would rise. perhaps not though, maybe nothing would change.

its not hard to get alcohol anyways. but then you could go chill at bars, and it woudnt be as secretive. for example in germany we can go get a case of beer and go chill somewehre. Here everyone buys hard stuff so you can just put it in your jacket. beer isnt as dangerous and shit as vodka

Same as France. It's 14 for beer and wine in Italy and I think 16 for Spirits.  The drinking age in Aus is 18 and it works fine. Yes there is a lot of underage drinking but if the legal age higher I don't think it would change.

the drinking age shouldnt be lowered imo because it isnt about health and all that shit but when you are in highschool you dont know that many people who are 21 but you probably know allot who are 18. It is all about who is getting influenced. I also think it is retarded to drink in highschool, but college is completely different

The thing is, other countries brought up their youth with the respect for alcohol. In many European countries, its not unusual to have wine with your dinner as a teenager. And unfortunately, American teenagers have been brought up with the idea that alcohol is something they're 'not allowed' to have, resulting with the abuse of it. Teenagers in America just do not have respect for alcohol (most, not all). Dropping the drinking age would be asking for madness. Its something that needs a better and more important fix other than just dropping the age. It needs to be mended from the inside out.

Jea I know what your saying but once again, if your 18 and you want to drink, your still going to drink, no matter if you can legally drink. If your stupid enough to drive after that, you still will. And then I don't think that would change the number of dui's or accidents. It would just stay about the same it is.

I definately like the beer before stronger drinks. So you can see the affects of alcohol, but with beer its not as dangerous

Lowering the drinking age to 18 has been shooting up the list in record time, passing ideas that have been posted for many weeks longer. We are currently in 14th place and have a good shot at getting into the next round.

21 is to high. you all know it. People would probably be a lot more responsible if it wasnt something special, something they have to hide. A lot of colleges want to lower it to.
