How do you setup a login password on a mac?

hey im trying to figure out how to setup a login password on my mac, i can logout, and have to sign in with my password, but if i turn the computer off then back on, it skips the whole login thing and goes straight to the main screen. so can anyone tell me how to setup a perminent login password thing so it happens everytime you turn the computer on?

not trying to thread jack but:
before when i closed my laptop it would keep me logged in but i'd have to type in a password to get back on. then one day i did something and it doesn't...how do i get it back to it was?!
