Real life pirates killing thousands in africa Interesting

So last week i heard something on the news about pirates in Somalia hijacking a ukranian warship and stealing 33 german military tanks, so i looked it up to find out more and learned some crazy stuff. Somalian Pirates hijack almost 100 boats per year. They throw the crews and anyone on board into the water to drown. In 2007, 1400 people were missing or dead after setting off into the gulf of Aden (The most dangerous stretch of water in the world, and the home of the somalian pirates). There is a large unknown mothership that was last spotted in 2005, this mothership sends out smaller faster boats that do the hijacking. Pirates hold anyone they decide to keep, as hostages, hoping for ransom. If no ransom comes or comes too slow, the pirates will just kill all their hostages and keep the boat and cargo for themselves.

i'm actually amazed sometimes at how many people don't know that pirates are still around. people seem to think pirates just went away when ships stopped being built out of wood and pushed around by the wind.

that one where you say there is a medium sized pirate boat in the back ground, well yea, that medium sized pirate boat is actualy flying the tricolor making it a french warship, coming to take back the french yacht that was just taken.

Piracy is a major problem in East Africa and Southeast Asia.

And the ship you're talking about wasn't carrying German tanks, it was a Ukrainian ship carrying Russian tanks to Kenya...and there's significant speculation that they were meant for Southern Sudan, which is an whole other issue and a big one at that.

Yeah forget Iraq.  Haha no but another good way would be to set up yachts for them to steal and once they get on it blows up.  That would be so damn funny.  They think they're hella gettin' bank off of it and they get in and if blows up.  It ought to teach everyone not to hijack ships.

im surprised how many of you are learning about this for the first time recently, but seem to have thought you were educated enough to post something akin to "mccain is dumb" or "obama is dumb" in other threads.

somalia is yet another example of how ancient borders drawn by european conquerers without any regards to the local situation have led to fucked up situations around the globe.

Actually, the borders in the Horn of Africa are more closely related to the actions of Haile Selassie after independence from Italy.  He was quite militaristic about expanding Ethiopia's territory and his actions and those of the military officers who overthrew him in 1974 led to a lot of animosity with Somalia that continues today.

Not to say Europe's actions in Africa haven't led to many problems - they certainly have - but East and Central Africa (especially the DRC and Rwanda) are better examples than the Horn.

Ah...no, not really.  The American Navy WOULD seriously fuck up any pirates anywhere in the world.  Pirates are a legitimate threat to cargo vessels, yachts, and even cruise ships sometimes, but they run and hide when any Navy - especially America's - comes anywhere near them.

not to be racist, but the only way that would be cool if it was like europeans doing it. africa in general has such a shitty ghetto way of crime,  like in a no respect at all for anyones life, not even their own kind of way.  it it was europeans it would be badass pirates with class, fucking people over, but in a cool way, not a bunch of poor as shit africans on motorized canoes just fucking everything over cause they have no respect for themselves i dont give a shit about anything kind of way.

them being black doesnt have anything to do with it, its just africa in general, its just fucked up in so many ways.

but just think about it, look at africa and all the crime that goes on there, its just completely 100% shitty. no respect at all for life, just fucked up depressing shit. its the fact that most of africa is some of the shittiest places on earth, that makes these pirates so not cool.
look at big criminals in history in the u.s. like oldschool mafia and stuff, its all organized crime, with morals, and respect and class. its still crime, but its such a better more appealing type of crime, the type of stuff that can be made into a movie.

like to me it seems like a bunch of people robbing anything they see, not giving a fuck whats they are taking as long as they are taking something. like a bunch of rats just out there fucking everything over cause they can and they dont have any morals or standards.. i dont have any respect at all for that.

i just find it humorous how naive most people are about how many of our modern conflicts stem from the lasting effects of colonialism.

im saying parts of africa are savage, there are parts of africa that arent, and there are plenty of black people who are civilized, there are white people who are just as fucked up. there are crimes that have some moral to it, and some crime where its just fucked up and wrong in every way possible, and this specific group of pirates are just fucked up and there is nothing right about what they are doing.

the take from the rich give to the poor type of crime, or the take from bad people type of crime atlest has reason morals and respect, this is just take from whoever kill whoever we dont give a fuck cause killing satisfies us, type of crime.

them just doing it cause they are selfish pieces of shit with no respect for life makes it uncool, which is what most the crime in africa is like.

i have a friend, and on one side of his family they were like hardcore mobsters around the 30's its probably skewed alot, but from what ive heard, alot of the crime was to help out friends and family, and punish bad people. not so much the kill whoever as long as i get what i want type of crime.

Haha hopefully, yeah.  I'm really baffled by people worshiping Selassie...he certainly wasn't the worst leader in African history, but he did a lot of bad stuff.  Extremely autocratic, obviously.  Literally sat by and watched as thousands of Ethiopians starved to death, while feeding his pet dogs and lions slabs of meat off of silver platters every morning.  And then of course left Ethiopia in a mess by becoming senile before ever addressing the issue of succession.

Where Ethiopia's borders originally come from, I'm not sure, but I don't believe they're of European origin for the most part - Ethiopia was a relatively stable and prosperous kingdom for centuries and was less subjugated by Europe than most other African nations.  I'm most familiar with their history since the 1950s though, so I'm not entirely sure.

As for modern conflicts stemming from colonialism...in Africa, they do and they don't.  It's not nearly that simple.  The scramble for Africa, I think, was somewhat similar to the arms race of the 20th century - once some nations started doing it, others had to follow just to maintain an acceptable balance of power.  As nationalism gained ground in the '50s, different colonial powers handled it differently, and there were catastrophic results everywhere.  And they were mostly caused by absolutely abhorrent leadership and mind-boggling greed and corruption.  In some ways, colonialism contributed to the attitudes that resulted in that, but the Europeans don't really deserve ALL of the blame.  Google some 20th century African leaders: Kwame Nkrumah, Gamel Nasser, Hastings Banda, Idi Amin, Jean-Bedel Bokassa.  The last two are especially unbelievable.  So yes, the borders the Europeans drew caused (and continue to cause) a lot of problems, but these problems are primarily perpetuated by Africans seizing opportunities to take advantage of other Africans in ways more horrific than many of their colonial masters ever imagined.

How can you get rid of the pirates if you dont know where they are? Someone just said that their mothership hasn't been seen since '05. Also, they're all around the world and there willa always be more, its not that simple.

Im not trying to stereo type or anything but based on lots of americans i have met i always get the impression that they think very very highly of themselves( as a country) but dont realize they are one of the most hated country's in the world( honestly i dont mean any offence but its true) dont get me wrong im by no means saying all americans are like this. I have met many who are cool down to earth people.

also, yes the US military does have the firepower to crush most armies, but they do not have the skill. the lowest ranking Canadian soldier is actually qualified for the highest-ranking soldiers in the US military. Look it up if you don't believe me, a 17-year-old Canadian soldier with six weeks of experience could move down to the US and automatically be upgraded to a Navy SEAL or Army Ranger (I know people who have done it). which begs the question of what the fuck it takes to be a low-level US soldier? Enough skin and bones to serve as cannon-fodder?
I don't mean to be a dick about it (well maybe I do), but the US military really needs to step something up before they go around claiming how they could kick in anyone's shit, and no it's not the weapons, it's the quality of the soldiers using them.
