forget pioneer and kenwood. look for a rockford deck. you can get a cddeck for $129us online and they hold up much better. I have a friend who has blown more decks, subs, speakers, amps, etc then anyone and his rockford stuff is holding up except for the amp he fried by putting a staple through a wire, and a mp3 deck that he took apart and fucked up.

yeah pio and kenwoods bite. I've personally blown a pioneer deck. they suck eggs. Panasonics are alright. I'm a Sony man myself.

1. Sony anything in car audio sucks ass
2. Low end pioneer and kenwood suck ass
3. If you can blow any head unit you probably installed it wrong

For 200-250 dollars you can shop around on ebay and find a nice Alpine or Eclipse deck, which will out perform pioneer, kenwood and sony any day.

are you gonna be runnin the subs off an amp, and are the speakers just gonna be running off the HU or an amp?
if you're not using amps, dont get eclipse. but i would say definitly check out alpine

it all depends on what you want to put in your car, how many amps ur want, and how much money your willing to spend, i know a shitload about car audio and i would suggest alpine heads before anything else on poineer the buttons are known to fall off and they spend all the money on the looks and screen rather than performance, but if u have any questions ask me

in my experience the good car audio brands are:
rockford, sometimes kenwood, alpine, jl audio, some jlb stuff, some clarion stuff,
subpar brands:
sony,pioneer, kicker stuff is overrated,

for a deck just look for something thats atleast 50watts per channel. Like I recommended before I would go rockford. compared to other companies rockford WAY underrates their products. their subs are rated at around .2% distortion, and their rms are undrerated.

Stick with Alpine. I have tried a buch of other and they just dont have all the features that an Alpine does. I personally love my CDA-7893. It pushes 60 watts to each speaker with isnt too bad unless you are gunna use an amp to power you speakers in which case the extra wattage of this model is not needed. It has sub control so you can run everything on you amp(crossover,ect..) straight from the deck. I love it check em out.

I started to look at Alpine and Eclipse, but found very few on ebay...and didn't know which models to look at. Any ideas?

From everything I know, the middle to higher end Pioneer decks (the ones I'm looking at) are very very nice units.
Sony's car audio is sub-par.

I'll be running an external amp for the subs.

What about that Panasonic and Kenwood? Please actually look at the ones posted.

some of the responses on here scare me. Personally, I would not be so quick to jump to a Rockford Headunit, personally don't like em, and they haven't been around long enough for me. Other than that, do not buy a Sony, you'll regret it. Pioneer, stay away from their lower stuff, but their higher end stuff is definately top-notch, but you will have to watch, as yes, as mentioned above, there can be problems with the buttons. Apline, everyone loves Alpine, but they to have crap low end heads, their higher end sounds really good and have good crossover points, but you better hope nothing goes wrong (I have a $255 bill for repairs from Alpine - screen went dead, wires crossed internally, the board had to be replaced, and a lot more - the deck even messed up some electrical in my truck). Kenwood also makes some nice decks, but the ones that are any good are about $400+ from my experience, and they can be a bit confusing to get set properly.

Best bet for a good priced decent deck is Eclipse (I've also heard some nice Clarion as well). The only thing to look for is the output voltage on the sub RCA's. Make sure the deck has a dedicated sub output (might also be called a non-faded output), and make sure that the output voltage does not exceed the input voltage of your amp.

Also, keep in mind that the gain on the amp is not a volume, it is designed to allow you control over the input voltage, the gain should match or be lower than the strength of your input voltage.

fuck off, I'm speaking from experience when I say Sonys rule and Pios blow. I dont hook up my shit to factory spec. cuz thats stupid and as long as your using decent shit its never been a problem. Shit happens thats why you have fuses, but cheap ass pioneer shit still fries when a sony will shrug it off. I've seen it with my own eyes, so go back to your speaker fag magazines. and just so you know, any $300 deck off e-bay is gonna suck dick.

Narrowed down (minus the Eclipse, Alpine, and RF---I don't know which models to look at, and haven't been convinced. I'd also like price ideas for those)

this is for a system that is starting small, hoping to grow, but won't be some huge earth-shattering deal.

I have a sony cdx-630.
Awesome deck, GREAT sound, some custimizable -ness, but not enough. Works for me and my subs fine though.


Any of those pioneer decks would sound good it really just depends on how custimizable you want the sound to be and if you like the graphics.
PIONEER PREMIER DEH-P850MP -I would recomend this deck because my friend had it, and it produced the best sound and looked pretty sweet in the dash.

Pat, I'm also trying to stay away from Sonys, i'm glad you like your's, but from the horror stories I've heard, I'm willing to go with something a little more reliable.

i have a pioneer..i'm not sure what model number it is..and it's a couple years old..but i like the sound that comes out of it a lot..she's been really reliable too..

i dont have any subs or anything hooked up to it..i'm got some pioneer speakers in the back..and stock in the front..so i dont have too great of a system..but it still sounds pretty good..

i'm lookin to get a new deck with an aux input becasue i just got an ipod..and i wanna hook that up in there..any suggestions?

also..i kinda wanna get some new speakers for the front of my car..seeing as that's the part i'm in the most..any suggestions on a certain brand?..i'm just lookin for sound clarity/quality..not power or anything like that..

I found the Pioneer 8500 for like 310 WITH an almost full 4 year best buy warranty...it's in mint condition and only around 5 months old.

Pioneers are actually good units for everyday shit. I doubt you're looking to be entering bass-offs and shit, so Pioneer is good for you.

And as for Sonys. I'd stay away from them. They are called Sony Xplode series for a reason. A friends has started on fire in the dash, and I know handfuls of other people who have had horror stories.

i have a sony x-plod and its fucking rocks, i run 2 15 inch subs off a 900 rockford punch amp and 2 6x9 2 4x10 2 4x4 and those run off 750 kicker amp. it will detroy all.
