i have been a vol./call firefighter for 3 years now and im going to school to get my degree in fire science so i can do it full time. i was just curious if anyone else is, or wants to get into the fire service. sorry if i wasted your time to read this.
I went though a scout program and was involved in my local department for 3 years in highschool. Im certified to do pretty much everything except go inside of a building because i had to stop training to go to college. I lost intrest after i got to school and havn't really been involved in about a year now.
Grandpa was a fireman, dad is dispatcher for local ambulance, uncle is volunteer fireman for 30+ years, cousins have been volunteer fireman since sophmores in highschool. I would like to do it but I'm leaving for college and never was interested before.
yah bro Im a volunteer fire fighter back home will be going full time some what soon. i just finished college and got my NFPA 1001 Standard so i can go anywhere in North America to be a fire fighter. I have been on the volunteer department for 2 years now.. I'm 20. I just took a few months leave because i moved to NZ to ski for the summer. My father is a Senior Captain at a full time department and hes then the Deputy Fire Chief on the volunteer department I'm on. Thats pretty random that some one posted about firefighting but thats pretty cool, i didnt even think about anyone else on here doing it. Good job though buddy!
definitely go get your fire science diploma and any other certifications you can. Its very hard to get a career job as a fire fighter nowadays.... often 2500 people applying for 3 positions... so its steep competition. You need to separate yourself from the rest of the crowd so you can get into the interview round. Get all the certifications you can get, DZ license, small engines, water rescue, high angle rescue, trench rescue, paramedic level 1, and there is a TON more to get that will impress any department. Also volunteer anywhere thats related to fire fighting when you can.. like at the hospital, EMS, police station, safety village, community halls.. and so on. I'm not sure how it works where ever your from but I'm from Ontario Canada and competition is steep so you have to really hard if you want to get into a department. Keep it up though man!
Yes its very possible to ski and be a fire fighter at the same time.. look at me I'm in NZ skiing right now!
I've been through everything your about to go through so feel free to ask me any questions.
my mate is flying firefighting helicopters in Canada at the mo. If its hard to get jobs as a firefighter maybe getting a heli license would be another way to go? I'm pretty sure he basically walked into his job.
