Anyone here had ACL surgery?

A buddy of mine is about to get his ACL (which he tore) operated on, he's hoping to get back on his feet in at least 1 months time so he can get back to work. His work is at a lock which requires him to be on his feet all day, is this gonna work out?

depends on how bad it is, my friend was on crutches for 3 months with intense kemo, ive had so many friends fuck up their acls i cant even keep track

haha kemo is for cancer dude. took me atleast 4 months to be normal again.

Preeeetty sure you're not gonna be on crutches for 3 months or getting chemotherapy for an ACL reconstruction.


I was off crutches in 3-4 days and regained a decent amount of mobility in a month. I could walk pretty normally. Going up stairs was a little painful for a while though.
Is he just standing around or what for his job though?

He won't be standing up all day for at least a couple months.  I just had surgery on my meniscus two months ago and I can barely spend an entire day on my feet--acl's are way harder to bounce back from.

my buddies been out for the majority of this year case he tore it playing rugby, and then tore it again. shit suuuckks, best thing isto just let it heal up i think

Oh, and by no means was I "normal" again.. Pussyfooter's right..it'll definitley get sore.  A lot.
It'll take a while..and I think it also depends on what kind of graft you get. I had a hamstring graft.. And everyone's different.

he'll be on crutches for a like 3 weeks minimum. i had acl surgery 3 weeks ago and i just got of that shit, sucks

And he must've either had a shitty surgeon, because its better to start walking as soon as you can..not to be on crutches for 3 months, or he must've not just torn his ACL then.

It all depends on how your surgeon does your surgery and if he uses a brace or not. I tore my acl on January 8th of this year. Walked on it and skied once on it before my surgery February 8th. It's now almost 5 weeks after my surgery and I can stand all day, stairs dont bother me at all, full range of motion backward (cant straighten it the whole way, im about 10 degrees from knee locking).

The day of my surgery i had a nerve block so i was on crutches for just that day but i stood at my schools basketball game the whole time with a little pain. My surgeon uses a brace for the first 4 weeks that allows you to walk. I'm now in my third week of physical therapy but i wont be running again till the 3 month mark or any sports till the 6th month.

I've had it done twice. He should be close within a month but they'll probably have him using a cane, if he's in good shape and does his pt properly, i.e. follows guidelines but doesn't push it. Walking on it too early will certainly not benefit it at all.

that doesn't mean that it's good to be full weight-bearing that soon. I know you also skied like three months after surgery, which I can't believe any surgeon would approve.

I think being on  crutches for 3 weeks (let alone 3 months) would be way counterproductive. It's all about you though. I guess it's different for everyone. I felt like crutches were being counterproductive after 3 or 4 days. I obviously kept the brace on, but crutches seemed like overkill after a few.

I guess that's just me though.

i went back to work 2 months after acl surgery.  i work at a restaurant so i was on my feet the whole time. my knee was real sore and swollen after standing for 6 or 7 hours.
