FIS - it'll be interesting

i'm just wondering about the pros who have said they'd never compete in an fis sanctioned event.
now that skier halfpipe might actually be a winter 2006 olympic event, it'll be interesting to see which of them will try to qualify. i specifically remember boyd easley saying in the movie 'unknown' that he would never ever be an fis skier. i wonder how many others have said the same thing.
i remember snowboarders saying it and they certainly changed their tune....could be interesting

skier half pipe may be in the 2006 olympics, but for this year they are running a world cup tour for pipe or I know for a fact 1 fis pipe event this november. the us team is tanner,pep and stefan thomas and the only chick I know who is on the team is martina thomas. this is the first step to the distruction of this sport the fis is fucked and has screwed ova skiing before(look at moguls) and as usual all the people and pros that dissed the fis before becasue it happened to be cool at he time to do that will jump at the chance o go to the olympics cause it measn more money for them. I'm looking forward to seing which pros are hypocits (tanner at the moment but he s doing because kerry miller asked him to and kerry miller made tanner so tanner owes kerry) and the people who will stay true to them selves and to the sport and tell the fis to get fucked. WE ALL need to boycot these events becaue it only starts with one comp then its 2 then 5 then who knows then the sport is fucked and controled (competition wise anywas) by a bunch of old fags from urope and the us whoonly want to capatalise on our sport they don't give a shit about progression or about the athletes or the sport they only care that half pipe could save tv ratings and make them more money so I have said it before and say i again fuck fis and if we let them get control now the compeitive side of the sport is screwed to all the people who may think I'm full of shit on this subjet histoy repeats it self.

FIS should pretty much just stick to racing. Freeskiing=counterculture=lack of structure fostering creativity. FIS=structure=slower progression.

you know - FIS may have learned their lesson - maybe thier goal is promotion not gain. if thats the case i wouldn't be surprised to see alot of riders there though. i like the idea of a tour - gives the riders and companies an idea of what the FIS new mentality is. (if there is one at all) something to watch and see fer sure though.

how can you bitches be so ignorant? how could the FIS possibly ruin freeskiing? what burdens or restrictions could it possibly place on an event like half pipe? none. has the FIS destroyed snowboarding? fuck no. if anything it will help promote the sport and get skiing into the mainstream. besides who the fuck are you guys to say that its going to kill the sport? its not like you own it, and if you truly love freeskiing you'll do it regardless of whether or not the FIS has its hand in it. quit bein little bitches and let it happen.

The Olympics is the biggest contest in the world. Why wouldnt we want this little hobby of ours(keep in mind that Twin-tips are still only about 7% of total ski sales, just below skiboards at 10%) to be globally reconized by all the winter athletes all of the world? sounds fuckin tight to me.....

naw, no prize money from FIS i'm pretty sure. but if you race world cup (ei. national team), sponsors and the government pretty much pay your salary. I think the issue has to do with amateur sport status.

snowboarding is huge, a lot bigger than the shit that goes on at fis events... that's not snowboarding, it's large events that make a large amount of bank and tv ratings or whatnot, it's definately not what our sports stand for.. i for one will boycott fis, they're just a huge corporation that will never understand the true form of skiing or snowboarding..

um, wait a second, didn't the ISF make snowboarding what it is today, in large part? I think so...but most of you kiddies are probably too young to remember the days when you could see riders boosting 2x as high at ISF contests because that's what the best snowboarders rode. The FIS hasn't done much for snowboarding, and it won't do freeskiing ANY good. Ask Mike Douglas or Shane Szocs. And yeah, pro skiers will gravitate to FIS contests because there is no alternative. NO one has been able to put together a world tour, and a whole bunch of them are exmogul skiers, which means that they WANTED to go to the olympics at some point. JF Cusson has said that the hardest part of quitting moguls was saying no to the olympics. Human beings involved in sport gravitate towards competition, it's human nature. Pros that ride FIS contests shouldn't be considered sellouts, but rather people who get screwed because they DONT HAVE ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE IF THEY WANT TO COMPETE.

they are training in switzerland in October and onto Chamonix France I believe.

they seem pretty sure that the skiing halfpipe WILL be in the next olympics. Some managers were pushing to get skiing slopestyle into the olympics but FIS turned it down saying it is 'too close to the event of aerials'

fis is shit they did nothing for snowboarding exept fuck it up look at the judging at the last olympics for pipe for snowboarders it was whack, first of danny kass won by a mile ross should have gotten 2nd and jj thomas can suck my dick he got beaten so hard by heki and that little jap ripper but no the judging system for the fis is gay it inhibits progression here we have ross powers doing the same run but going bigger and wining and danny kass almost going as big and doing way sick more stylish tricks and he didn't win FIS is fucked if you don't think so your a trader to the sport. HISTORY WILL REPEAT IT SELF I PROMISE U THAT.

All of you people who say that FIS hasnt affected snowboarding, thats bullshit. Why do you think that Terge has created the Ticket to Ride events and tour? Because FIS is completely against the ethos of a 'freesport' such as boarding and indeed Skiing (our kind of skiing)

Just wait, FIS will get involved, countries like Finland will created 'Newschool skiing acadamies'where they will churn out skiers like fuckin robots to compete in FIS events simply to qualify and hopefully dominate the olympics. Its happened already in snowboarding, the FIS world halfpipe tour had something like 8 fins in the top 10 all of last year.

newschool skiing belongs to the riders, boycott FIS and stay true. Every one has a choice, hopefully the majority will make the right one.

This is so dumb, FIS won't ruin skiing, they can't I don't fuckin care what they do. Your all being to easily influenced by media. If FIS scores a quad twister high I still won't want to do one, will you? It really does not matter what they do and if they put pipe in the olypics I think it'll be good. We may be able to get more events out of it, sell more skis, and get more sponsorships because they helped the sport grow. Skiing is way bigger than FIS I don't think it matters what they do. The true core of the sport is in the woods with freinds not what the FIS is doing.

Until there's a valid alternative COMPETITIVE TOUR, not just one off events like Winter X, pros who want to compete will probably do so in FIS events, because they DON'T HAVE ANOTHER CHOICE. If it pisses you off, start up an alternative. The FIS sucks ass, but if it's the only thing out there and you wanna compete, you don't have much choice do you?

true^ but it needs to happen man, someone needs to talk to the organisers of all the major core events, and try to put them under a banner of a tour, with a final event. But then its easier said than done. For now it looks like FIS may indeed rule, however we feel about it.

I'm kinda excited to see it in the Olympics to tell you the truth. I don';t think anyone can say for sure whether it will turn out to be good or bad for skiing.
Do you gusy think that snowboarding halfpipe in the Olympics was a good or bad thing? I say good. There will always be judging complaints, even in the X-Games and probably even worse at the US Open, so I don't think that's an argument that you can use.

i dont think it matters what the FIS says about its one newschool skiing event. they could make the rules whatever they wanted cause its not going to change the sport or the people involved. its not like other sports where the main competition is the olympics or world cup events.

How can the FIS really change pipe skiing that much? Judging is whack in any sport where it is how performance is based. I got beat in a pipe comp last winter by a girl who merely skied up and down the walls while I was doing alley oops and grabs (not an upper level comp by any means, but clearly I'm more accomplished than this girl was).

The Olympics are cool. Amazing. I worked the women's downhill start at the Salt Lake Olympics, the energy and the excitement from people just being there is amazing. I think it would be a good way to get the sport some exposure so that we get better skis, more cool programs for little kids and beginners, and everything that comes with a sport becoming popular.


Over time, most people experience life involving love, sufffering, compassion and an uspeakable drive for something new... for me there's skiing, nothing more nothing less and it encompasses everything, every day I'm out there.

FIS DID NOT end snowboarding, or fuck it up or whatever. It didn't. Stop being so damn dramatic.

Now a days skiing, like snowboarding, is to far removed from the world of FIS to be destroyed by it.

There was a time when FIS 'could have' spelt the end of things; before there was an industry, before there were skiers making over 6 figures a year, before there were more ski videos put out ever year than you could shake a stick at, before there were mutiple magazines dedicated solely to the sport, before there were companys run by the very athletes who participate in the sport. Before all of that, FIS might have been able to 'destroy' skiing. But now, in the year 2003...they can't touch it.

There are to many individuals (be it people, or corporations) with their own agendas (or financial stability or what ever) tied into the industry to let an outside orginization such as FIS bring it down.

Give the FIS their world cup tour. The people who ski in it will make a concious desision to do so, and it won't take away a thing from what is going on outside of the FIS tour. Halfpipe in the olymics will expose our sport to an audience we could never touch otherwise, and the industry will grow as a result of it.

as much as i would like to see skier halpipe in the olympics i don't think it is deserving, i say the same about snowboard halpipe and some other sports, i don't think they have the same disipline as other athletes, must olympians are in crazy shape always training, maintaing a healthy diet i don't see most pro skiers doing that, its a privalge to go to the Olympics and i don't think we are at that level, soon the Olympics will be just like the X games and i don't think it needs that

jsut because halfpipe may be in the olympics doesnt mean it will 'fuck up skiing'. lets say that it does get in, and the big bad FIS 'fucks it up'. u think that it will have an effect on skiing? if it sux that bad, noone will do it. they will just go to other pipe events. if fis trys to regulate it that much, people will just say, nope, see ya. if it gets in and works, awesome, but if FIS gets to constrictive, freestyle skiers (if they/you are indeed as nonconforming as you say) will say fuck off and go back to x games, hanging in the park and back country. if it gets into the olympics and sucks, it wont hurt the sport one bit

just like skiing fis has prob also prgressed and if there is a olimpic halfpipe they will have to let certain this slide due to that it is different then any other skiing even. i wouldn't worry bout it to much

but i am worried about the drug test for them haha tanner will bomb that one worse then my last math test
