College Advice/HALP Thread ; S

Hey so I am a freshman at Suffolk University in boston mass. First let me say being in the city is completely ill/generally like all my classes/think the kids are pretty cool ect. BUT there is literally no social life. Every party consists of a small apartment scattered around the city, which fucking blows.

Now my question to you is...would i be able to justify a transferr based on social life alone? Im just not to happy here and the way i see it if i am paying for a college education, I should be somewhere I love. Anyone else go through this? Lemme know.

P.S I clearly know i should'nt be complaining considering some other peoples situations in the world but just gimme a hand eh?

well if its JUST social life- then stick it out for the whole year, then reevaluate.  sounds like if the kids are cool, then you guys can find a way to throw down together. 

however, if you are not going to be happy then you def need to transfer after the year.  sucks ur not 21 cause then you couldnt complain- boston is ill for college kids

yeah i'd also suggest stickin it out for the first year. i mean sure, its rough not having a social life, but you're a freshman, and its only been like...a few months into the school year, i'd give it a bit of time.

hey if you not too into your school but dont want to transfer you should go abroad, i went to london for the year...cheap flights to geneva from london city airport..spent a couple weeks in tignes. 4 ft in 3 nights, and 3 blue bird days.... and unfortunately 2 ski patrol deaths.  intense bc. check out the tr here http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73000

suffolk is an amazing school! i have friends who go there...one of my friends her dad is a professor there! and the social life in boston is wayyyyyyy better once your 21!!! i went to school in newton, and we would always jump on the t to go intown on the weekends! there are sooo many colleges around you! northeaster ussually has good parties....get out there and meet some people from diff schools! get a part time job in the city and meet some new peps!

Are you honestly telling me there is no social life in the city of Boston? I live here. Only recently turned 21, and let me tell you, there is plenty going on.

i agree with everyone else, stick it out

also, you aren't far from schools like northeastern and BC, so meet some kids there and party with them

I Have a legit id that works at anybar in boston, the problem is I dont know many people at all who also have one. Out of my close friends only 1 kid has one, and I feel like such a loser just going out with one guy(we never meet anyone at the bars). And every bar I've been too(Been to a ton)  is all older people, mostly 25-35 crowd. My breakdown of the school: every party at a sketchy ass apartment in the northend which you can only get into with yourself and 4 girls. Everyone is off doing there own little thing. Sucks. And i know people at neu, girls infact, and even they dont have too much to do. This is not college life dammit. ; (

just start hanging out with people in classes. things will get better.

In the dorms which are in a really sick area, but they are fucking insane about drinking. Already been written up, so dorm parties consist of sitting in my room watching a movie with a few people and drinking a few. Thanks for the responses though, it means a lot.

Id say stick it out for a year and see how it goes. As for the bars, I'd recommend staying away from them for the time being. Like you said, a lot of people at the bars are going to be around 25-35 and they're not really that interested in chillin with a freshman in college. And the parties, well a lot of college parties will be pretty sketch with the whole bring four girls or pay to get in deal unless you know someone who is throwin down or knows the person who is. I'd recommend establishing a close group of friends that you can relate to and who are ur age, and then goin out around the city and seeing what it has to offer other than parties and bars, I've heard Boston is a sick town, but if there is nothing else then you know yu always have the parties. Its cool to go to parties and stuff, but partying every weekend can get old, and you can begin to loose sight of what else the city has to offer. Plus if you party too hard your freshman year, your grades can drop bigtime and then you spend the next 3 years bringing them up which won't be fun. So yea, just don't try and grow up too fast, be a kid while you still can and you'll have fun.

i'm at northeastern and want to transfer based on the fact that i can't stand being in the city, i need forests and fields. no matter what your reason, you absolutely should be happy because it's your tens of thousands of dollars being spent for this. maybe if it was something minute like you don't like the food in the dining all on fridays. but social life is a pretty big part of your everyday life in college, and if it bothers you that much there then transfer.

i go to northeastern too...seems like you should come meet us at the wanderland premier on saturday... also check out gardener street at BU craziest parties i have been to in a while. they are always bumpin

I go to BU, we have a lot of good parties, you just need to know where to go and haveing friends with apartments helps a lot.  Also Ashford is even better than gardner, you can litterally walk up to any house and chances are theres a party going on.

yeah i was there last saturday and the entire street was a costume party and i went to the swimmer house and paid 1 dollar for a cup...needless to say that area is dangles

whatever these people say im not gona read it too late too drunk but if u arnt hapy with it then transfer. im not happy at uvm. im going to try to transfer. but ive gotten in trouble 2 to manny times but if u arnt happy do what ever to make urself happy who gives a fuck if the other peoople at you school are happy with. this is exactly the advice i want to hear from someone dooo it

Yeah well i have decided to transfer. I am applying to northeastern(#1) BU(prob wont get in)Umass, and some small liberal arts school outside of boston(maybe skimore in my home town or something). Well hopefully i can stay sane the rest of the year and get through this. Thanks for the comments.

thus far, northeastern isn't as fun as i thought it would be. i hate my journalism major so im switching to the english/linguistics program for next semester. we'll see how that goes i guess. i want to try co-op and if i don't like that then there's no reason to stay here. ideally, i would like to transfer to mcgill if i do decide to transfer.

First off, if you aren't happy with a place, you won't do well educationally either. So you do need to adress that. You have to want to be at college to do well at college.

Secondly, I think your expectations for college may have been a bit high going in.

One thing I learned from my first year of college is that unless you go to a huge Southern party school like ECU or UCF, college is not like the movies. I mean hell, there's a lot of drinking and girls and fun to be had,  I loved my first year, but it's just not going to be nearly as crazy as most people expect from watching too much National Lampoon. Stick it out and try to see it in a better light. That being said... I did transfer after my first year, partly for the same reasons as you, so take that with a grain of salt haha.
