HIIT

any one use HIIT (high intensity interval training)?, if so...

-what variation/intensity/intervals?
-what's your routine, and how many times a week
-have you noticed increases in lung capacity? capability?

Basically, if you train using HIIT, do you love it, or hate it?

awesome, thanks.

running is my preferred cardio, so i think i'll go with a couple of days a week doing hiit the "ghetto" way on a track, i think its too hard to adjust the speed on a treadmill accurately, etc..unless you have your own treadmill that you can program.

whats your height/weight?

If you want to get good upper body cardio then get a punching bag it's excellent for getting your heart pumping.

good call. i went to town on my friends punching bag when i found out my bf had cheated on me. the next day i was so sore, i was like...maybe theres something to this punching bag thing.

my new gym doesnt have them though, so that sucks.

so i just tried my first HIIT session, and 20 minutes felt like the same work out i get with a 90 minute jog.

I don't think i've ever actually done HIIT, but I think we did something similar to this when I ran CC and Track. It was basically interval days, we would have a fast interval day and a slow interval day. The slow day we would do like 8-12 400 meter sprints, with 3 minute jogs inbetween, or jog until your heartrate is below 120 bpm if it is under 3 mins of rest, then go again. Times vary based on your mile time.

Fast days, we would do 6 400's, 4 200's and 6 100's, all out, and then rest like 2 mins in between. Those days sucked, came close to blacking out on more than one occasion.

After you build up some cardio, those two workouts are great for boosting it further, it's a good way to really build up your cardio.

it was technically 11 minutes of hit. 5 minute warm up, 4 minute cool down.

but yeah, i could have pushed myself harder

its an intense form of anaerobic training.

its 12-18 minutes of intervals. example of a HIIT workout:

4 minute jog warm up
30 second sprint as fast as you can
1 minute walk
30 second sprint
1 minute walk
30 second sprint
1 minute walk
30 second sprint
4 minute cool down

its good training for sports like football (and some forms of skiing), where you need quick jolts of excelled performance.

and apparently i read an article that although it burns the same amount of calories as a regular cardio workout (30 minute jog)...it burns 9x the amount of fat.

its also a way to get in a really good workout in a short time.

although, i read that it doesnt do much for stamina/endurance, since its anaerobic.
