When I give someone a handshake it's usually firm with a good grip. But today at an interview a woman gave me a very limp handshake and I didn't know what to do, so I just gave a half firm handshake. So I'm curious what is proper handshake etiquette? Should I always have a firm handshake, or match what the other person does?
Male to female handshakes you should loosen up a bit and just give a light, brief squeeze. Also when shaking a woman's hand, they need to make the first move. It's like consent for the handshake to happen.
And that my friend, is the proper handshake etiquette.
Guys should be firm, but in a handshake with a girl, don't grip or squeeze.
Girls should leave it a moment and then give a light squeeze before releasing.
Wow, never thought about it before
my french teacher is whack, he does the whole, correct handshake, but its not much of a shake, more like a wild ride, he like throws your arm up and down. mad ghey
Oh ya don't look at your hand or away from the person. I hate when people don't look into my eyes when I shake their hand. My boss just last week turned down a qualified intern because his handshake was sloppy and he didn't look him in the eyes.
haha the other day i accidently gave the most gay handshake ever. it was like i shook their hand with my thumb and my index and middle finger, that was all.
i've come across to male to female handshake every saturday at church. most of the time it's older women though so it doesn't matter how i shake, but if it's a younger girl around my age then it gets akward. usually my whole hand like dominates their hand so i can't get a normal shake and then i feel like an idiot.
though i've always wondered what a girl would do if i kissed the back of her hand like a real gent.
I caddy at a country club, and whenever you meet the member u caddy for, u introduce urself and give them a handshake. I had this one guy one time, and i shook his hand, but very limpy handshake, and he wa slike "Jay what was that?" Im like "what?" "Hes like you can tell alot about a person the first time you meet them by a handshake, always a FIRM handshake." Shows self confidence. So i always give a firm handshake now Thanks to Mr. Vespa
someone probably said this already, but i hate it when the other person closes their hand before your hand is there and you end up shaking with your fingers and you feel stupid. sucks if it is a guy or girl you are shaking with.
an overly firm handshake usually signifies dominance over someone or superiority, and weak handshakes mean inferiority, and i leanred that in cotillion, so just a nice decent handshake, not a dead fish but ur also not trying to break their hand
eye contact
firm
and make sure the part of skin between your thumb and index touch. for instance make a right angle with your thumb and index and the spot where it is 90 degrees should be touching.
you can take it a step further with the correct placement of the index finger, but that is getting into freemasonry and im not supposed to talk about that.
Handshakes say a lot about you and you can change it depending on the relationship you have with the person your 'shaking.
Say if you're having an interview you should shake to show what a determined, professional but sincere person you are so it should be firm, eye contact and a smile.
If you are meeting someone new normally just be yourself, whatever feels natural.
rolling the hand over the other persons with a firm shake is also a show of dominance, not drastic but just so that the dominant person's hand is slightly past vertical. (Does that make sense?)
ahah reminds me. i teach swimming lessons and after the last day the parents often thank me shake my hand whatever. anyways there was this one parent, pretty big guy an tough lookin and he shook my hand...it was the limpest, wimpiest handshake ever...to myself i was thinking uhhhhhhhhhhh. its true how the say someones handshake can define them
